Janelle from Comfy In The Kitchen is back for another recipe!

“Here is yet another recipe I have tried…and tried….and well, you know made a lot. Over the weekend I finally said “Ahhhh….yesss! This is IT!” Here it is, the BEST Southern Tea recipe you’ll ever sip! This recipe is great because it is super easy and doesn’t require the sun or the stove (nothing wrong with those two methods-this is just so easy!) There is a *secret* ingredient that may take you aback -but, hopefully you trust me by now and know I would not lead you astray…..”

Fill a pyrex measuring cup with 2 cups of water and microwave for 2 mins. Add 8 tea bags and 1/8 tsp of baking soda and let steep for 30 min.

Pour concentrated tea into a container that allows room for additional water. Add 1 cup of sugar to tea.

Stir well until sugar dissolves. (You may use sweetener in place of sugar, but the amount will be different- read your sweetener box for the equivalent of 1 cup of sugar)

Add 6 -8 cups of cold water (depending on how weak/strong you like it). Serve in ice- filled glasses…. sip and enjoy!

  1. Yeah, this is exactly how I make mine. If you use Luzianne tea bags, you can eliminate the baking soda. The baking soda keeps it from getting cloudy and bitter, but the Luzianne tea bags never do that. We are HUGE sweet tea drinkers, and I keep 2 gallons made at all times.

  2. I LOVE southern sweet iced tea! The baking soda helps to soften the natural bitterness of the tea. That’s a trick my grandma taught me!

  3. Stumbled across your blog tonight and am intrigued. I look forward to reading more. BTW….this is exactly how my mother taught me to make sweet tea but without the baking soda…I want to try that this week!

  4. As a born & raised Southern sweet iced tea drinker… who’s been making sweet tea since I was knee-high to a grasshopper… I gotta ask… What’s with the baking soda???

Truthfully though, I think there’s about as many sweet tea recipes as there are Southerners… Glad you found one ya like! 🙂

  5. I was just at a tea room for my daughter’s 12th birthday. The directions they gave us for the black tea was to steep for 3-5 minutes. The reason being that it would get bitter after that amount of time. I’m not sure if it’s different with iced tea or not. We make it all the time here, but I realy dont stick to any other guidelines that 6 tea bags and 1c. sugar. I will definately try this “recipe”. Thank Janelle! (one of my daughter’s name btw, LOVE it!)

  6. Love it! Thanks Janelle! I had no idea about the baking soda, but I am off to give it a try! We drink a LOT of iced beverages here since it is so HOT all the time. Thank you!
    Blessings!!

  7. I am a Yankee transplanted to the South by marriage and my husband is a SERIOUS tea connoisseur. I am going to have to try this one out and see what he thinks!

  8. Is this the small tea bags or large tea bags? I have always had trouble making the perfect tea. I can’t wait to try this

  9. As a southerner, I love my sweet tea. However, I agree with the commenter above who pointed out that you don’t need baking soda if you use Luzianne brand tea because that one doesn’t go cloudy. I’m kind of attached to my traditional stove method sweet tea, but I’m going to have to give this variation a whirl.

  11. I LOVE my sweet tea and so happy that Texas finally woke up and started serving it sweet in their resturants again; the first time I visited my husbands family here about 9 years ago they only served unsweet. Sorry, it HAS to be sweet!
I use family size tea bags and was wondering if thats the size you used or not? Thanks!

  14. I make a semi-sweet tea, using my Mr. Coffee. First you put five tea bags into the coffee maker fill with 12 cups of water. Turn on and brew, when done add a cup of sugar while it’s hot to dissolve then add to a gallon container then fill with cold water. There you have it, a lovely sweet iced tea. You can add more or less sugar to your taste.
