We Are All Just Donkeys

We are all donkeys

This is not an insult. Just stick with me for a second.

In the blogging world, there’s awards for everything. On the “Circle of Moms”  they crown the Top 25 Blogs in a boatload of categories: couponing, cooking, decorating, party planning, travel, homeschooling, beauty, fashion, vegan, fitness, outdoorsy, single moms, adoption, and more.  You name it, they crown it and yes –they even have a Christian Mom Blog category.

I’ve been in the running a few times for these awards and it’s been awkward for me…I mean – really…should I try to get votes for an award for sharing Jesus on-line? Probably not. It’s awkward…but I have to humbly admit –I’ve participated and accepted the awards.

As I reflected this past Palm Sunday on those who cheered “Hosanna! Hosanna!” as Jesus rode upon a donkey – I remembered something I once heard.
Elizabeth Elliot once said “as the people cheered for Jesus, the donkey did not pause and accept the praise as his own. It was the rider who was being praised – NOT the donkey.”
Matthew 21:9 says, “The crowds that went ahead of Jesus and those that followed shouted,
Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
This praise was NOT for the donkey.  In the same way, as I carry Jesus to the world via my blog, facebook, twitter, and youtube, I am reminded that all praise I receive belongs to Jesus. Apart from him I can do nothing. And apart from his word, I literally have nothing worthy to blog about.
We are ALL donkeys carrying Jesus to the world. I pray that at the end of the day it is Jesus people see in you and me.

I Corinthians 3:7 “So, neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who makes things grow.”

According to this verse, we are nothing – just simply planters and God is everything and as the missionary David Livingston once said

“People talk of the sacrifice I have made in spending so much of my life in Africa…I never made a sacrifice. We ought not to talk of ‘sacrifice’ when we remember the great sacrifice which He made who left His Father’s Throne on high to give Himself for us.”

No sacrifice is too great for Jesus.
It is not a sacrifice to honor my husband – it is my honor.
It is not a sacrifice to care for my children – it is my honor.
It is not a sacrifice to care for my home – it is my honor.
And it is not a sacrifice to daily be the donkey on social media – carrying Jesus – it is my honor.
I pray today that in your sphere of influence, you would find it an honor to carry Jesus to everyone who crosses your path inside and outside your home. If the message doesn’t get out via us, it doesn’t get out!
We are all just donkeys.
Love God, love your husband, love your children and take Jesus to the world – shine like lights in the darkness!
It is an honor.
Walk with the King!

  1. I love this Courtney! We ARE all just donkeys….and not JUST donkeys, we need to take this position seriously and BE donkeys. 🙂

Many Easter blessings to you and your family!

  2. I really loved this message more than any I have read. Such a simple message but a MUCH NEEDED one! Thank you for the reminder that we are all called to share Jesus and to help the world come to know and love the Lord as we do! I too am proud to be a donkey!!

  3. This isn’t the first time somebody has suggested to me that we’re all donkeys 🙂 Being a MAF missionary, we sometimes refer to ourselves as donkeys as we serve in a service-oriented mission for other missionaries around the world. No we aren’t the missionary doctor, church planter or evangelist… but we took them where they needed to go. It’s been an interesting road to travel, as we explain our ministry to potential supporters—humbling and good. Bringing this perspective to the homefront is also so important. Thank you for the reminder that it is our honor to be of service to our families!

  4. What a profound reminder of our position and place in the Kingdom! All Glory and Honor abound to Him for every good and worthwhile thing we do! I especially like the reminder about sacrifice. None of us truly know what sacrifice is when we really take into account all that Yeshua endured for us, all He sacrificed. The word just takes on a different meaning and nothing in our lives could ever compare! All the I go through, good or bad, is and honer and a privilege because He gave me life! Powerful perspective shift!~

  5. I love love love your message today Courtney ! It IS an honor and privilege to be a wife, mother, homemaker and vessel for Christ ! And I am blessed over and over in the process. Thank you for your thoughtful words and reminder.

  6. very good to remember. It’s so easy to think our accomplishments are our own, when it’s God who enables us to be successful.

  7. Amen!!! What a gift, to ever be used, in any capacity to bring Glory to God Almighty!!! Praising HIM with you!!! HE is Worthy to be Praised! God’s continued Blessings to you my sister! 🙂

  8. What an inspiration you are! I teach a “Called to Be A Keeper” bible study to young women in our community that not only teaches what the bible says about our role as wives and mothers, but also teaches skill sessions like “cooking shortcuts”, “household management” & “hospitality”to mention a few. I love that women your age are so hungry for this information, and I love seeing what God does in their marriages and families in 10 weeks of study. God has revealed to me that He is raising up a “Mighty Army” in your children’s generation and that is why I feel such a passion to teach God’s plan for the homelife of these little guys.
May God Bless You! You are the confirmation for me this morning that God is going to do a mighty work through your generation.

  9. Thank you for this message!

I have now printed and taped up ‘So, neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only GOD who makes things grow’ onto my little wall here at work. I work on a tree nursery! Such a good fit for my line of work!

Exactly what I needed to hear today. Amen, thank you.

  10. I love how you changed sacrifice to the word “honor”! I’m so thankful to have your perspective of the donkey!

  11. Such a wonderful way to put this thought. My daughter’s lesson at church has been about Jesus riding on a donkey and the people singing Hosana so this hit home to me! Thanks for sharing!

  12. True to the spirit of your message, Courtney, your last name isn’t anywhere I can find on the site. It’s not about you – but I want you to know how much people appreciate what you write.

  13. Lets remember that the donkey is a symbol of peace. The donkey was chosen as a symbol of peace and fufills the text of the old testament prophecy Zechariah 9:9 “Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly and riding…upon a colt.” This is once again sound proof that Jesus is the Messiah. “Hosanna” means “Save Us”. I hope this helps others in their ministry to unbelievers when they are seeking truth and providing evidence that Jesus is King:)

  14. Thank you for the reminder. I want to be a donkey for Christ in all that I do. I find I get exhausted at times when I help all the time, but I am looking at it the wrong way. I am honored God gave me the servants ways as a gift and not a chore. I tend to forget that. Thank you again for the reminder.

  15. BEAUTIFULLY said! I have struggled with accepting praise and trying to remember to be humble in so many areas, especially where I serve in my church. This is so well-written and so very true. Yes, we are all donkeys, but God has certainly blessed you with the ability to be open and get your words out on your blog. I read daily but very rarely comment, so just know that you inspire me daily!
Thank you for touching on Palm Sunday too! I feel that this week (“Holy week”) is often forgotten in some Christian communities, but I think it’s important to reflect on these events that ultimately lead up to Jesus’ rising on Easter morning.

  16. Thank you for always putting things in a way that is easy to understand, but touches so many, so deeply. Thank you for the reminder that being a wife, mom, and homemaker is a high honor that I should take seriously.

  17. When life can be hectic and our plate can seem to be so over crowded at times, this was a welcome reminder to “honor” the items on my plate as they are being taken care of. Thank you for the reminder. love from a fellow donkey “heehaw”

  18. This was beautiful. Exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you.

Wiping the tears from my eyes…
    Shari

  19. Thank you so much for the humbling so needed this day when I was starting to feel so sorry for myself !! Whatever the Lord asks of me, even though I find it difficult, it is not a sacrifice, it’s an honor!! How freeing from myself!! Thank you!

  20. Awesome post! And so well said. I’d be interested to see how many hits you would have gotten on this post if you used the “other” word for a donkey 😉
I’ll be a donkey anytime for Jesus!

  21. I already heard a message on this and this post confirms it.The Holy Spirit is`amazing.
Quick suggestion, for those who agree with comments already said could you add a like sign?

God bless and keep shining for Christ.

  22. Courtney,

I love what you said about us being the donkey! What an honor and priviledge He is giving to us that we could share His good news to the World where He has planted us!
Bless you in your ministry and walk with our KING Jesus!

    Sevina
