Slowing the Pace of Life to Meditate {Psalm 1}

As busy women, we need to find ways to squeeze every bit of nourishment from God's Word as we can; slowing the pace of life to meditate on God's Word. #Biblestudy #Psalms #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.~John 15:5

Good Morning Girls!

Last year I contributed a post to John Piper’s on-line ministry titled 7 Ways For Busy Moms to Get Into God’s Word.

The post is about meditation and squeezing all the nourishment we can out of God’s word through out the day.

As we read through God’s word together – cover to cover – one chapter a day, I am thrilled to hear so much great feedback.

You are busy – but you are slowing down.

You are meditating on God’s word.

With this Bible reading plan, it is possible for busy women to delight in God’s Word!

A tree that is lush and bearing fruit is evidence of roots that are in rich soil. They run deep where no one sees, but we know they are there because of the beauty of the tree.

Psalm 1:2,3 compares the righteous man to a tree:

His delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.

The location of a plant is a choice.  Where have we planted our lives? Are our roots, the hidden parts of our lives, grounded in the living waters of God and His word?

We must choose to slow the pace of life enough, to plant ourselves where our roots can grow deep into God’s word.  Then in the storms of life – we will stand strong and on the sunshine days, we will see fruit produced by the grace of God.

Elizabeth George has said:

Behind the passionate life of every passionate saint is a passion for God and His Word.

Let’s make God our constant companion.

Let’s make God’s Word, our hourly guide.

Sunday, September 28th, we begin the Book of Genesis. {October’s reading plan –> is here.}

Slow your pace and make space for just one chapter a day.

You can do this!

  1. I was also struck by the image of the tree planted by the water and feel the call to have my roots, as you say “grounded in the living waters of God and His word”. I’ve been getting up before my kids get up (5:25am) in order to be able to spend time in the word before the busyness of ministering to them takes over the day. I do devotions with them as well, but this morning time is my time to drink deeply and to listen quietly to what God has to say.

  2. This may seem trivial, but your video just made me realize today the progression of being with sinners in Ps 1:1… walking, standing and then sitting! I’ve read this Psalm probably a million times and overlooked that. I love learning new things, so thanks!

    1. Wow Christine, can’t believe it, this is what struck me too this morning, the progression of walking, standing and then sitting with sinners.

  3. Courtney, I have been following your blogs and emails for quite some time. Your words and encouragement to stay rooted in Gods word strengthen me and model to me the kind of Godly mother and woman I do truly want to be! But you are right, the world is so busy and I believe your statement about moms who keep themselves busy in order to be good moms is so true! Thank you for reminding us that the only way to truly stay rooted is to stop and let your roots grow! You are such a blessing to me, Courtney! Keep walking with the king! Be encouraged today to stay steady in your ever constant walk!

  4. I love doing one chapter a day! It’s not overwhelming; and if I get off track, I can just jump back in! Thanks, Courtney! You and this ministry are such a blessing.

  5. I have also read this Scripture many times and just sat back in awe of what it was saying to me. I want to so much be that good grain choosing God’s direction each and everyday, reading His Word, Studying it , and being that tree that soaks up all that nourishment. Praise God!! For His mighty words to us each day, I am enjoying doing this study a chapter a day, The Lord has opened up more things to me during my time of reading than I ever thought possible , thank you for your insight also into his word, and to all the ladies that have responded to your posts, the Lord is blessing me through this ministry

  6. Courtney, this summer one of my girl friends came upon your book and suggested that a group of us college friends read it together and start a digital book club. We all live in different places, CO, MN, WI, and IL. We became friends freshman year of college and we try to get together at least once a year, however your book gave us the opportunity to meet every other week via Google video hang outs. From there we have picked other books to read, we have started our own “Good morning girls” through a private group on Facebook and several of us are participating in your Blogging Through the Bible challenge. I just want to take a minute to say Thank You. Your ministry has brought 8 friends who live apart closer together, strengthened our faith and slowed our lives down to spend time with God and with each-other. Blessings on your Friday and you weekend.

    1. OH I love this Susan! That’s so great! What a blessing to have such a great group of friends who want to talk about the deeper things of life!!! Thank you for sharing this – it blessed me…a lot!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  7. Thank you Christine for pointing that treasure in God’s word out. I didn’t notice that till i read your post. verse two spoke to me. How blessed are we to have God’s word, or how I like to put it God’s heart, with us, to guide us in every situation we face. Psalm 102:18 this will be written for a later generation, and newly created people will praise the Lord. God is good!!!!!

  8. Although we’ve been reading great stuff this week, I was most giddy by the colorful bible post you shared! It’s the small things! LOL! So I linked up to how I was inspired! I’m a cardmaker and I never thought to combine two loves together! FUN!

  9. I think I’ve been prioritazing things I shouldn’t and excusing myself telling me that I am too busy for this and that. It’s been hard weeks and this chapter made me stop and think about where I am going… and sitting! As you said before: walking, standing and then sitting… So you made me realize about it. I want to sit where I can be a good person and “meditate all day and all night” so God will help and protect me.
I found this website quite a few months ago and it’s so inspiring and encourages me to be the person He (and me too) wants me to be. Courtney, you are doing an amazing and wonderful job and I will not have enough words to thank you. Thank you for this community you have created where I have made some lovely friends and where I am learning so much stuff! I feel so blessed <3
Once again I love His perfect timing because you and your website appeared when I needed most.
    Have a nice Friday!

  10. Just another thought whilst meditating on the word, regarding the walk, stand and sit. We actually are to do the opposite; WALK – in God’s light. STAND – for the things of God. SIT – remember that in Christ we are seated in heavenly places.

Thanks for your blog and study program, Love it.

      1. I’m learning so much from your blog and SOAPing my bible study, I loved the colorful journal and bible someone posted in the week. Have started to make mine more colorful and interesting, it helps to remember the message better too. Blessings to all.

  11. Here is what I’ve learned from reading through this chapter in Psalm 1 today.
Psalm 1 Is showing a contrast between the Godly and the ungodly.

V1. We are blessed when we don’t gravitate towards the sinful behaviors of the world. We live in the world, but are not of the world.
V2. Our delight is to be obedient and following God’s Word day and night.
V3. Like a tree surrounded by the Water of Life, bringing forth fruit in the right seasons.
We shall stay firmly planted and rooted in the things of God. We shall prosper! God’s promise is if we faithfully follow Him and do what is right and pleasing to Him we have a blessed hope to look forward to in heaven.
V4 – 6 The ungodly will be blown away by the wind, and they will perish!

Two very different destinations for the Godly and the ungodly.

  12. Courtney, I love Psalm 1 as well! Such a good word to slow down and make time for Bible study. I also wrote (a poem) this week about the struggle we women face to push aside everything else clamoring for our attention and meet with God in His Word. Busyness was the tip top issue in my ladies Sunday School class.

  13. Hi Do you still have the Psalms 1 – 50 bible study you did in July? And I was wondering do you have it translated in Spanish?
    Thanks please let me know
