How to Create a Prayer Closet – Your War Room

Jesus often withdrew to spend time with the Father alone in prayer. Here is how we can create our own prayer closet, our war room. #Acts #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls #WarRoom

For those who have read my book, you’ve read about my prayer closets – my war rooms.

As a newlywed, I felt a need to create a “prayer closet” so I turned a walk in closet into a prayer closet.

Matthew 6:6 says “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

In the closet, I put an inexpensive chair and footstool, a cheap night stand filled with journals, pens, my Bible and hymnal; a little water fountain and CD player in the corner, along with some photos of loved ones. This was the most inviting quiet time place I’ve ever had.

In our next home, I turned my vanity –in the master bathroom– into my sanctuary!  With little ones totting around – I found it hard to find a quiet moment to read my Bible and pray.  The bathroom seemed to be the only place I could truly be uninterrupted!

We took down the mirror, and I put up a dry erase board. Then, rather than using the drawers for makeup and accessories, I filled them with devotional books, highlighters, my Bible and planner, and set my computer on the counter top.  This is where I first began blogging – from my bathroom – Lol!  Actually – it was my war room. 😉

I have worked hard to create an escape from the distractions of life to be alone with God.

Do you have a place where you get alone to pray?

Maybe you have a chair in the family room or you prefer your kitchen table?  Perhaps it’s your car or a bench at the park.  In my college dorm, I would go to the stairwell or shower stall to get alone to pray.

It’s not as much about the place as it is about the prayer.

At times, my prayer life has felt like a wrestling match – with distracted thinking, interruptions from kids, or worse…drifting off to sleep.  A thousand invisible enemies seem to fill the air the minute I sit down to pray.  Anyone else relate?

This is war my friends.

I have written about one solution to this struggle…my prayer journals (you can read about them here) but let’s look at Acts 6-10 and the prayers of those in the early church.

Forty-eight times in the book of Acts, it says, “They prayed.”

The power of the early church came through prayer.

Acts 6:4 says,  “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

Acts 6:6 says, “they prayed and laid their hands on them.”

Acts 7:59 says, “And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

Acts 9:11 says,  And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying.

Acts 9:40 says,  “But Peter put them all outside, and knelt down and prayed; and turning to the body he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up.”

Acts 10:1,2 says, “At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.”

Acts 10:9 says “The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.

Acts 10:30 says “And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour”

What about now?

What about you?

There’s no time for lukewarm Christianity!

We need prayer warriors NOW!

Prayer is a necessity!

We need women willing to pray fervently for their husband

willing to pray for their children

willing to pray for their grandchildren

willing to pray for their friends children

willing to pray for their co-workers, friends, relatives, neighborhoods, churches, communities, our sister’s and brother’s in Christ and the advancement of the gospel – around the world!

Stephen saw the heavens open and there was God in all His glory with Jesus giving him a standing ovation – that same God – is watching over you.

God hears your prayers.

God is ABLE!

“Prayer works. It always has. It always will.”
~Priscilla Shirer

May we STOP neglecting the power of prayer in our lives and become prayer warriors.

Let’s create prayer closets and war rooms – in our closets – bathrooms – cars – wherever you can get alone!

Pray!

**Chime In**

Will you commit today to pray harder, longer, and more than you have been praying?

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
~ James 5:16

  1. I have a spot in my living room that I like. I have a serving tray with all the stuff {markers, recipe cards, sticky notes, tags, etc} that I need for prayer, bible study and bible art {when I do it}. Problem is… I tucked that tray away in early August when I had house guests but I plan to get it back out tomorrow and recommit to a better prayer life. I saw War Room this week and felt more urgency.
I also liked the coffee analogy… You like it iced or you like it hot but no one likes it lukewarm. What a timely awesome post! I’m on it!

    1. Mary – I know you are a woman of prayer. I was so encouraged to see your system the time you shared it in the leader’s group! Thank you for the way you pray over our ministry! God is at work in the lives of the women you pray over everyday. Thank you!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

      1. My pleasure! The movie talks about discipling and GMG has been a great place for women all over the world to come together to encourage one another. I am so happy to be a part of it. :o)

      2. I have just begun my journey in my war room (my clothes closet). I’ve already experienced such peace and a closeness with Christ. I have so much I wish to accomplish for the glory of God. Please keep me in your prayers also as we go along together with our love for Jesus…
        love Ann

    2. Im very inspired by ur ideas n just like war room movie. ive always pray n my room but always being disturbed. When i read the bible, ive always fall asleep. When i pray i pray better inside my mind.

  2. My favorite spot is sitting on the swing on our deck. There is just something special about being outside during this prayer/devo time. I have used my shower time as well.

    1. Stephanie,

OH how I love getting out doors too – sometimes just a walk to the mailbox turns into a wonderful time of uninterrupted prayer! lol!

A swing sounds glorious! Keep praying!
      Courtney

      1. Every time I mow the grass or work in the yard, I sing, “Jesus, Jesus there is something about that name.” I continue to praise and worship until my job is done. I have fallen in love with doing my work now. It is a great way to worship our Savior!

    2. You cannot do that 8 months out of the year where I live due to the heat and the other 4 months the Winter visitors come in, my neighbors, and they are just 1+1/2 feet away from me on every side. We live in a park model in a RV resort, and I say resort loosely! Trust me in Yuma there is nothing grandeous that it should be allowed to use the word resort like it is some sort of oasis paradise, it is not.
Enjoy that porch, it is a blessing for sure.

  3. Hi Courtney,

I created my first prayer room in my apartment’s walk-in closet. I cleaned it all out and did the GMG’s Proverbs and Songs Bible studies in there. My newly married husband and I bought our first house and just moved in. I’ve been looking around the new house for the right spot to create my next War Room. Until the boxes get unpacked, I’ve been going outside for Bible study time or the kitchen table. I feel closer to God when I’m outside, so perhaps a treehouse War Room?? lol — I’ll let my husband know he has a new project! 😉

I also want to thank you, Courtney, for all you do. I’ve been doing the GMG’s Bible studies Proverbs, Songs, and now Acts. These are the first Bible studies I’ve ever done. (27 years old) It seems every book you select is exactly what I need to read. I’ve become wiser, a better wife, and now am learning to be bold with my faith — all while making my Bible so colorful and bright. I can’t wait to see where GMG goes next!

    1. Katie,

I’m so excited to have you joining us for your first Bible studies – what an honor! And an outdoor treehouse war room sounds so fun.

      Congratulations on your new house!
      Courtney

      1. I have started trying to pray diligently but I always have people around me until late at night, so I tend to do my praying on the go or late at night. may turn part of my storage into a war room.

  4. I made a prayer room in my closet on my mirror, I started after I saw the movie but I need to continue. I feel like I’m allowing hindrances to stop me from having my quiet time with the Lord, I feel Him drawing me to Himself.

    1. Carolyn,

The mirror is the perfect place…because we all know where we look every morning…in the mirror!

So glad God is drawing you – keep walking closely with Him,
      Courtney

  5. My war room is in my car. I do my devotion and pray in my car while in carpool waiting on the kids to get out. It’s quite and peaceful. It’s my alone time. Just me, my bible and God.

    1. I usually do my devotions in my car during my lunch hour. Sometimes it’s the only hour of peace and quiet I get in a day.

At home I have a room I call my Mom cave that I plan on setting up to be my quiet space.

  6. Hi! This makes me so happy. When I was in my twenties I attended a weekend seminar called Change the World School of Prayer. I’ve had a place of prayer ever since – almost 40 years. What a blessing to hear of a new generation of prayer warriors rising strong! Be blessed. Right now my prayer place is a leather chair where I lean my ear into the heart of Jesus, hear His heartbeat and ask for opportunities to do Love for Him! Thank you so much for the refreshing travel through the Bible with you.

  7. I have not seen ‘War Room’ yet, but have seen the previews. I have my prayer closet set up in a 31 mobile tote, so all that is in their can go wherever I go; whether it’s in the bathroom, the back porch on the swing, or in the upstairs bedroom. The tote has my journal for prayers and notes, other prayer journals, markers, pens, and sticky notes for marking in my bible. Plan to see the movie this weekend and hope to come away with ideas to increase and enhance my prayer time.

    1. That’s an awesome idea Miriam…I’ve sort of done this too. My handbag was oversized so I walked around with pocket sized bible and journal and prayer books. I looked like my grandmother! 🙂 I haven’t done this for a while though…need to start back because you never know when or where you need to pray!

  8. We just moved across the country again (military), and are homeschooling our three school shef children for the first time. I’m finding it very hard to limit distractions other than VERY early in the morning. Creating my own war room is on my agenda for this weekend now.

I love your studies and enjoyed watching your videos about homeschooling on YouTube when I was in the planning stages.

    God Bless!!
    Kati Naatus

  9. I don’t really have a prayer closet, but I do have a favorite spot on the couch by my corner window that I like to do my bible study and prayer. My actual all time favorite place to pray is up at my parents home in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Wish I could post you a picture of the view, but I can’t seem to do it here! They have a back yard that over looks the mountain range, and it is there, that I feel closest to God and love to spend time praying. I definitely loved the movie, “War Room” and I am working hard to make my prayer life what it needs to be, but it is definitely a journey some days. I know God hears my prayers and answers them, He is saving my marriage and I am SO grateful, I just need to learn to fight the “right way.”

    1. I’m so happy for your restoration. I’m praying for God to restore my marriage and I am encouraged and filled with hope at your post!

  10. My War Room is my craft room. I have a very comfy chair and footstool, a small shelf (both from Ikea and were previously used in other parts of my home), and my favorite item is a quilt my mom made for me last year. The different blocks represent different things I love, but there are also biblical quotes on a few too. She made it specifically for my quiet time. That blanket means so much because she does not read the bible or attend chair yet she appreciates I do and made the blanket so I can snuggle up with it daily as I do my quiet time.

    1. Jodi,
How wonderful that your mom made a quilt for you to use during your prayer time with God. She sounds like a lovely person and a good mom.

    2. Jodi – I am a quilting Mom. Your quilt intrigues me. Could you post a picture or something as inspiration. I would love to make something like this for my daughters.

  11. I do my prayer time long before my kids are awake (usually at 4am) that’s usually when I read your blog posts too. Along with this post I also read what goes in your journals. I have been inconsistent with journal long since I was 13. I journal led a lot about my sister and others in my family back then but eventually I read them and like you said I found them ugly. That’s when I turned my journals into prayers. They are true heart felt cries to God. I sometimes wrote out a study I am doing but I usually find that is easier to do on the computer.
When I write my prayers I follow the PRAY-Praise, Repent, Ask (for others), (ask for) Yourself. Most of the time, but no matter what I try to remember they will probably be read one day, by my children or other people who find them when I am dead and I want to be a good witness even then. I actuary my words to live long after I am gone to heaven. It is one of my silent ministries. So I absolutely write down the problems I have in life, the struggle have with my children and then in each and every journal entry I praise God for those people as well. I repent of what I did wrong, write out why I think it happened like it did, try seeing the situation with God’s eyes and with the other person’s eyes. And when I go back and read those entries they don’t look ugly or bring up those hurt feelings they remind me of how God brought me through a rough situation and usually help me to remember what steps I took to get out of it so that I can use them again.
My quiet time consists of reading a chapter or more a day (usually I only success on weekdays) and then journal long my praise to God and my frustrations with life and ending on a note of humble admission of sins and praise to God for his mercy and goodness. Oh and a cup of tea.

    1. Samantha..I have kept a prayer journal these past six years, though I was a bit dry in the last couple. I have all these little pocket sized journals lined up on a shelf in my room. I have used them to praise God, cry out to Him and I write down what I think He is saying to me and all of the scripture I received. Every time I take one down I am overcome with how much God has worked in me over that time. That is an awesome legacy to leave for your family!

  12. Hi Courtney,

Thank you so much for this timely and encouraging post. We welcomed our third beautiful baby girl into the world on July 2nd, and over the course of the last year I have drifted far from the quiet times and growing prayer life that I was experiencing. I’ve been feeling defeated, guilty and often alone in this new season of life. I’ve so enjoyed reading everyone’s ideas for creating war rooms for ourselves, and it’s my prayer that one day soon I can figure out what that looks like for me. 🙂 Prayers and advice are certainly more than welcome. 🙂 Thank you for this amazing ministry!

    Kim

    1. Hi Kim!

It can definitely be tricky to find quiet time for prayer with a newborn, when my son was a newborn I would pray while he slept in my arms. I would tell God how grateful I was for him and for our family! I often communicate with God and Jesus through out the day, small prayers here and there, so I never go a day without prayer. I believe God put me here to be a mommy, and He loves me and hears my prayers no matter when or where I say them. I usually get time to kneel and pray when my son naps and before I go to sleep at night. It’s all about that balance, and I’m sure you’ll find yours soon! In the meantime, God still loves you and hears you! Congratulations on your baby girl by the way! 🙂 <3

      Sending prayers!
      Shelagh

  13. I was so blessed to be able to see Beth Moore speak live in Wichita last weekend. She told a story of getting alone with God and “doing business” with Him on a deserted beach. I tried going on my porch for the first time, which is beautiful. I wish I could send you a picture. The connection was so much deeper than it had been before! I felt like the Holy Spirit was moving the clouds just for me. I’m hoping to make this a regular part of my morning routine until it’s too cold!

    1. Johanna, I love to connect with God through nature too! I feel like Adam and Eve must have felt walking through the Garden of Eden with Him in the cool of the evening.

      1. That reminder of Adam and Eve walking through the Garden with Him in the cool of the evening…..just gave me chills. That is just what is can sometimes feel like when I pray, or just sit quietly with God. Thank you!

  14. Mine is outside on the front porch, ideally when the sun is either up or coming up. I love to sit in the sun and have my time with God. This started when I was craving sunshine. (I found out later it was because my vitamin D was so low.) It’s awesome to feel whatever weather he’s prepared and hear some of his creatures making their noises while I’m talking to Him and reading His word – just another thing to praise Him for! 😀

  15. My prayer room is my car. Is the only place I can find peace and quiet and can be intimate with God without distraction from my kids. You got it right when you say this means war when we are doing this. Sometimes I wonder if this is the reason why I have had so many car accidents. I was just in a car accident This Wednesday while praying. I was in a car accident 8/1/15 while worshipping God and waiting for the light to turn green. I was in 3 car accidents Jan-Feb. 2014 right before I became homeless and my prayer room became my home. It’s a battle we face, but we weren’t made to conquer. We have to continue praying and being the warriors God is setting us to be. It’s a war, but our battle has already been won! Don’t give up ladies! Not for one second!

  16. I’ve ALWAYS wanted an actual prayer closet/room. Unfortunately in this home there just isn’t the space. 🙁 But I do have a spot in the living room where my Bible study bag is and I do my daily devotions. <3 I have my quiet time when everyone is still asleep so I can pray without interruption. There have been times I've gone to my bedroom to really "go to war" if it was midday or whatever. A friend of mine recently posted that she made a war room in her basement. That got me to thinking that I actually could do that. The spiders and I will go to battle. ;)

  17. I have a desk set up in our kitchen, with my Bible, prayer books, notebooks, journals, pens, highlighters, etc. I also like to reflect outside as soon as the sun is coming up, the birds are chirping, and the leaves are rustling, I feel most close to God at this time. We live in a small home with no extra closets – we don’t even have a pantry 🙁 But I so wish I could, ever since I saw Maricel’s from WifeMommyFamily on Instagram and her YouTube channel. (if you haven’t I highly recommend you check her out-such a sweet soul!) I have yet to see the movie War Room myself and my husband are saving it for our anniversary date <3 later this month.

  18. Courtney, Amen sister!! I agree…..we need prayer warriors and we need them now! Anyone can be a prayer warrior! I know at times there are those that feel like they don’t really know how to pray or those that feel that so many other people are praying so they don’t need to……but everyone needs to! All the time!

I have adopted your prayer candle idea into my home and shared the idea with my group. I have found it helps me to pray more often, and a friend of mine just got her first prayer candle for her home!

I don’t have a room (small house and 2 kids!), but I have a spot in the kitchen where I sit on the bench table every morning and do my studies, SOAKs, and my prayers. I love kitchens; I feel that kitchens are the heart of every home. So what better place to give my heart to God!? =)

I appreciate the GMG and your blogs so very much! This community has really helped me grow and have a solid relationship with The Lord!! Thank you! =)

On a side note: Mary and Lisa Marie, I love your prayers and faith filled spirit! Thank you so much for inspiring my prayer life!

  19. I have made a habit of reporting early to my shop, then I do Bible study, and praying. The war here is that I have to wake up early to beat the traffic jam,and to reach early before clients start interupting. Thanks for the encouragements.

  20. My room is my prayer closet. On my mirror I have index cards with the names of the people and organizations I am praying for along with a picture of what I am praying about. I see it through out the day. When I am picking out my outfit- I pray for a card. When I fix my hair- I pray for a card. When I go in my room to grab something- I pray for a card. Every time I look in or walk past the mirror I pray. I have had great discussions with my foster kids because they see the cards and ask what they are. They see the names of my former kiddos and know that I keep praying even after they went home and will do the same for them. As my health has been declining and my memory is not what it used to be (even though I only 31) the cards are my memory

    1. Everyone’s answers were beautiful but yours brought a tear to my eye. Foster kids are in such need of prayer and usually have no one who will pray for them. I will join you.

  21. I’ve been inspired by all this talk of a prayer room and of course by the movie, although I have not had a chance to see it yet.
I’m thinking of converting a shed we have into a war room. Its quite large and insulated with windows. I just have to clean it out, which is so hard to start! I would like it to be a family war room actually. With lots of area to any one in my family of 8 to sit and be in prayer. I want to encourage my children from a young age to pray like this!
    Thanks for the encouraging post!

  22. Several years ago, during a ladies retreat, we made prayer baskets. We decorated baskets with lining and ribbon and flowers etc. In our basket we put our Bibles, devotional books, pens and highlighters, notepads and notecards for sharing our discoveries and blessings with others. How nice to be able to carry our prayer baskets outside or to a quiet place in our homes and have everything handy.

    1. I love the idea of the prayer basket. My War room will be very small and the prayer basket is perfect for my bible, books and pens. Thanks a million!

  23. I’m so thrilled to hear about everyone’s “war room!” Since I started babysitting my 2-year granddaughter, I’ve had to make a few adjustments. However, I love including her in some of my prayer time. Her attention span wavers quickly, but she loves taking part. I hope I can be a good influence on her.

  24. I don’t have a praye war room yet and I definitely know God is calling me to begin one just not sure where yet I work and live on my job I take care of a 90 year old man I do have my on bedroom however the closet is small no room for a chair table or anything for that matter however this is something I definitely want to do so please keep me in prayer as I pray for Father God to direct me in this. Thank you and God bless you Abundantly ?❤?

  25. love reading of everyone’s place of prayer.
My favorite place to meet with God is outdoors. In the nice breather I sit outside and spend time with Him.
When the weather is too cold to stay outside for extended periods of time I try to find a place indoors. When I can keep others from interrupting I use my breakfast bar in the back of the kitchen with a big picture window.
I am planning on cleaning out my office and putting a chair with small storage ottoman and small table for writing. Using my wall for posting prayer requests. Since I travel at lot for work I keep prayer requests on index cards in small plastic case and carry with me. I can read them any where any time.
I want to be better with spending time God. He has been so good to me, I owe Him much more than I currently give Him.
Thank you for this blog. It is inspiring.

  26. I think I’m gonna turn a corner of our spare room on the 2nd floor into my Prayer Closet! I have a desk in that area. Now I just need to clean it off 😉

  27. A separate quiet place for me to pray and work on Bible study (quiet time) is a real problem for me. I would love it and seriously need it, however, we are retired and live in a less than 600sq.ft. home. We have just one car so making that my prayer room is out, plus where we live the temperatures are so high I would need to have the car running the whole time which is a distraction for me plus expensive. So in the home it is one long straight living space, the rooms are not even really closed off or divided, just off centered pocket doors, big gaps at the bottom. The bedroom has about 8 inches of space at the sides and a foot at its bottom, no closets just a rod for hanging some items and a chest of drawers. No place is quiet. The office area is shared and so not private and I cannot ask my husband to do his work on his lap on the sofa. In fact as I am writing this and reading my Bible my husband has been talking to me because he can there are no doors to close and say this is my space. You can’t have your own private space in 600sq.ft. Sad right?

  28. We have an alcove off to the side of the kitchen, our kitchen-living room combo is about 13ftx13ft, very small, but this alcove is where a small dining table could be, but my husband has this gigantic leather recliner in it and I repeatedly ask him to please sell it or give it away so that area could be made into a tiny reading like nook. He says no, he loves that chair. I get it because in this small of a home everything is so tight and there is very little comfort and that chair is comfortable for him. Anyway thought I would tell you all this as I just asked him about again…still no.

  29. Last year we built an addition off the bedroom. That is where my desk is and where I go to do my Bible studies and meet with small groups on the internet. My Bible study supplies are all located there. I have a bookcase and an old china cabinet that I use for books and things. This is where I pray also. This is my “prayer closet”. I have no distractions (except the backyard through my window and my cats). This is the place that I go to meet God through His Word and prayer.

  30. Hi there Courtney (or any readers that can help me!)

I’m trying to finally start a prayer journal of my own but, for something that seems simple, I’m having trouble knowing exactly how you create one. Do you have a post out lining how you journal your prayers?
    Thanks

  31. I just watched the movie “War Room” yesterday. I was inspired to continue to pray fervently for my family, friends, co-workers, neighborhood, community, our nation, and this world. My “War Room” is my pray walks with Jesus. I love to pray as I walk around my neighborhood. It is often where I get my best ideas and feel motivated about making a difference in all areas of my life. Looking up into the heavens and around at God’s gorgeous creation brings me peace, restoration, and motivation to continue to live for God each and everyday. Although I am not perfect, I serve a living God who is!

  32. I pray and worship while I’m running. If I pass someone out on a run I try to say a prayer over them as I pass by them if the Spirit impresses on me, whether it’s another pedestrian, runner or homeless person and I pass by a few of these on certain routes. I also am an advocate of praying in the shower – uninterrupted time!

  33. Hi Courtney, and everyone else!

I like to think my prayer is good and strong, I pray daily and I enjoy my prayer time, it centers me and makes me feel closer to God and Jesus. Sometimes I wonder, though, if I am praying for the right things or if my prayers will be answered since I feel I am the only one praying for my family.

I don’t currently have a war room or prayer closet, but what a great idea! 🙂 I usually find time to pray by myself in my living room while my son naps, since that is usually when I read my bible and write in my journals. I also find time to pray by myself at night before I go to sleep and often take time to just reflect on things by talking to God and Jesus.

  34. Hello Courtney and the Sisters!

I just created my “war room” last night! It isn’t really a room, more like a chair in a corner with a tray and some wall room to tape prayer tools too, but I love it! Having a set place to pray and encounter the Lord has been on my heart since I saw War Room with my husband a few weeks ago. I am so thankful the Spirit brought this to my attention and has made a way for me to have space with Him.

I am also working through Priscilla Shirer’s Armor of God study – learning how to pray strategically and specifically to fight against the enemy. I have never prayed like this IN MY LIFE! I am so blessed by it already and I cannot wait to see what the Lord accomplishes in this season! I have also been so blessed by your study methods, Courtney! I thank God for you daily. I have grown so much and feel so much more capable of approaching the Scriptures with your study tools in hand. Thank you so much!! And I pray that the Lord continues to bless you and your work!

  35. After 3 years of divorce I decided it was time. I finally opened up and cleaned out his closet, painted it and turned it into my War Room where I go and pray for my kids, my family and friends. Now I do all my fighting in prayer and in MY Prayer/War Room.

  36. Hi Courtney
i saw the movie war room and had a problem i live in a small house with few closets so i had to come up with a way to have a war room i have 2 notebooks 1 i titled my war book the other my rememberance book it has changed my life but now satan is throwing his punches and i am kicking his butt

  37. I loved this article about your war room. And yet, we live in a small condo, but have a chair with a bath crate and all my Bible study stuff in it. I do my quiet time early so not to disturb my son and husband. An added thing–a friend gave me a poster board with the ribbons on it. I have it upstairs and have prayers on it. Such a good idea.

  38. My War room is my bedroom. My husband left our family Sept. 2014. I have all my devotionals, Bibles and laptop on my headboard. Although my kids are grown, they still live with me (even a son-in-law), so my house is too crowded to afford a spare closet. So I pray on my knees on my bed or on my floor. Of course I pray that God will bring my husband back to his walk with the Lord, and steer him away from his un-Godly influential friends and away from the adulteress that he is seeing. But ultimately, I ask His will be done, and I ask for the blessing of Peace and acceptance for me. It has been a very hard year for me.

      1. I needed to hear that now! I’m trying to give God all I got. But I still have doubt and that doubt brings fear.

  39. Try Young’s Literal Translation. I just recently switched to it because the very first time I read a verse from it, it was like new. It was such a different experience than ever before. I used to use the ESV. Nothing comes close to YLT for me. And the way it;s written kind of MAKES you have to meditate on it… and isn’t that the point?

  40. My husband and I went to see the movie War Room because a good facebook friend of mine said it would help me with the situation I am in. My husband was reluctant to go. At that time our funds were low but we went anyway. We were both so blessed by the movie. My husband said he really liked it and it touched a part of him he didnt really know. We came home (on a Sunday) and built my war room. It is quite large for a war room but it was a room not being used. I have pictures of my children and grandchildren in there some scriptures taped beside them on 3×5 cards to the wall. I have a comfy chair an electric fireplace my bibles high liters pen devotional commentary 3×5 cards and a side table in there. I am usually alone during the days I pray in there except for my dog Lazarus come 4th but I shut the door anyway. It seems like as soon as I go in there the street gets busy and the neighbors come out. I try to concentrate the best I can. I know that God is there with me. That is our place together. This world is falling and it seems Americas hedge of protection is being cut down limb by limb. We are at a critical time right now my friends we must pray very hard. God Bless you for your prayers and may God restore America to the God fearing nation it once was. I always say I was born 20 years too late.

  41. We’ve moved quite a bit and it tends to take a while before I settle and find that ‘prayer closet’ spot in the house. I think I have found a new spot in the corner of my studio/study/ optional guest room. With all this in mind I recently decided to have a bag where I chuck in all I need. That way once I have my equiped tote bag I can ‘set up camp’ in many different places or spots, allowing flexibility as the need arises.

  42. This post was so timely for me! I am in a place of being desperate for that next place in prayer. I want to grow deeper in my communication with God and the Holy Spirit.

One of my struggles is that sometimes in prayer I feel the fire of God a and I am certain that He has done or answered every prayer. But other times, majority of the time I am distracted and feel like I’m praying in circles and there’s no power.

I understand that it’s not about how you “feel” but it’s about your level of faith in prayer. I desire consistency. I desire to grow beyond praying for myself more than I pray for others (in my personal prayer time)

So even though I am headed to the airport for vacation right now, I am deciding that when I get home, I’m converting my walk in closet in to my prayer room. I’m going to start a prayer journal and keep track of my prayers and how the Lord speaks and answers.

I believe in he power of God and I believe in miracles through prayer!

Thank you for this post and God bless your ministry!

    Brittnee

PS. I’ve been married two weeks now and I also desire to be that praying wife! Your prayers for my husband and I are appreciated! Thank you!

  43. What’s GMG that everyone is mentioning? I want to do it in one of my small closet but don’t know where to start. I have a small apartment so there is containers and Clothes there

  44. I don’t have a specific corner of the house or room like you do; but make every effort to pray when I am walking. Recently I used a standup tanning bed for 4 times, and used each 10-minute spot as a prayer closet. Both the walking or tanning are times when I could use music to pass the time, but I have so many prayer requests or needs for my own prayer that I would find music a distraction. Thank you for your blog and for sharing your faith. I’m hoping to add your blog to my own.

  45. I have a few rooms I like. My favorite is my sons’ room closet. They have the biggest closet…a walk in and I keep it cleared so you can literally lay on the floor. When I close the door it is perfectly pitch black which helps me focus on God’s presence. Sometimes I bring a candle and a journal with things I want to pray about and stay in there for a good 30 minutes. Other times I just bring my ipod and headphones to listen to worship music. I also like to go in any of the two bathrooms. I’ll turn the sink faucet on and the exhaust to mute my voice, and just kneel at the tub and pray. These are just my private prayer places, but I get just as good a prayer in the open of my bedroom, living room, or car. I’m happy to see everyone understands how important and powerful prayer is.

  46. I have enjoyed reading everything. I use my kitchen table to pray after everyone has went to bed. I mostly do journal prayers. I am in the process of making me a war room and I have seen the movie and it is a fantastic movie that I had to go out and buy it. I am also doing a war room bible study after the new year. So this should be interesting. For my praying I have incense, lots of pens, a bible, music, oil, and journals.

Im asking that everyone please put me in your prayers that I have a stronger praying life in the years to come. Please pray for me and I will surely keep you guys in my prayer. Thank you

  47. I have found the bath room over the shower to be a great place. Buy few clear sleeves to make sure you prayers don’t get wet. Plus no one who used the bath room is going to look in the shower !

  48. Hello everyone! I just watched “War Room” with my family and I am so ready to create a war room as well as devote time each day to prayer. However, my question is……does the closet have to be COMPLETELY cleaned out? I have a walk in closet and I am thinking about rearranging it so that one side is my prayer area while my belongings remain on the other side. Is this ok?

  49. PTL everybody!!! It is so wonderful to see so many women reaching out to the Lord. I feel much better knowing that there are others on the same journey as me. After seeing the movie War Room I went home and created my prayer corner. Something that has been on my heart for a long time. So in my basement I have a simple chair and a class coffee table. I also found a copy of the War Room study guide at CVS pharmacy. I have that my bible my sticky notes, pens, markers etc. My devotion time is 4am. At that time my little ones and my husband are asleep. I start each devotion with a promise from the bible. These are the weapons that I use when I am faced with a challenging situation. I also write down a special prayer request everyday for one person that the Lord has laid on my heart. Any help with starting my prayer journal? I am a bit stuck?. Thanks

    1. Courtney has a wonderful layout for her prayer journal. I took hers and tweaked it a little for mine. I use C.P.R. Confessions, Praises, and Requests…

  50. I was just able to watch War Room. I can’t get scripture up in my war room fast enough! I have a nook in my apartment where my kitchen table goes. The table is made for small spaces and I have one side folded down and all my pens and notebooks are in the drawers set in the middle. I have so much storage space in my place that I had no idea what I was to put in those drawers…. Now I’ve found something to put in them and to use with purpose! In less than a week I can feel more of the Holy Spirit. Than I ever have! My new apartment is full of Gods mighty hand! I’m excited to continue and see where God leads!

  51. Plz tell me where i can find the prayers used in the movie war room.
I have looked online n cant find them anywhere.
    Are they written out online?

  52. Hi Mrs. Coutney, I’m just starting to pray a little more than I use to. I was looking for something in the Bible and came across you. I got chills from reading some of the scriptures. And i couldn’t stop. I am going to do better with my reading. Thank you

  53. I really enjoyed the reading and the post. Can you offer me some guidance to help me make my prayer room stronger and powerful.

  54. You are AMAZING! 🙂
I’m 23 years old, two years married. And there’s times were I feel completely alone in life, but I know I have GOD.
I have taken notes from your webpage, on what not to journal and also how to color coordinate. I am so excited to start this new journey with the Lord. -Tania

  55. i am going to make a place in my dining room at this stage i am praying every where and it is not always sucsesful i will pray every dayl

  56. I have an empty room I wanna start my pray room in. Just not to certain on how to go about. Trying to get a closer relationship with God. Can you help me?

  57. I am just now doing the book of Acts Bible study. I didn’t start GMG Bible reading plan until the study of the Book of Mark. I am trying to do old studies on the weeks between new studies and so I decided last week to start the book of Acts. As for prayer closets, I have always liked to have my devotional time at the kitchen table. This just seems the most natural for me. I only bring my Bible, devotional book -if I am using one- pen, highlighter and now my laptop for doing these studies! I don’t think it’s important so much to focus on finding “the right spot” or setting everything up “just right” so much. I like the idea of having a specific closet for prayer, but many people don’t have that option and I think that is fine. Actually, I like having my devotions at my table because it means my daughter gets to watch me. Anyway, just my thoughts and I’ve enjoyed getting to read everyone’s comments!

  58. I have not started my war room yet, but I plan to do so this weekend. I am excited; I just want to stay consistent with it as well. I have a strong hold in my life that I have been trying to get away from for some time now and I really need to stay strong when I get weak. I am praying that God helps me release this strong hold so I can minister to others as I am suppose to without any distractions.

I appreciate all of the stories and comments on here, they were very helpful to read.

  59. I am just moving into a small condo with one closet. Really thinking about how to create a “war room” space for prayer and devotion, with space being so limited. I thought about a prayer wall in my bedroom, but don’t want to get distracted by sleep, tv or other daily clutter. I wanted my prayer space to be only for prayer. I welcome ideas from other prayer warriors.. Thanks

  60. Hallo ma,

Just stumbled upon your blog today as i did some research on my upcoming blog post on the power of a praying woman.
I have to say this article really blessed me!!
Let me go through your blog and sign up for the resources.
    I’m glad and excited.

    Thanks,
    Nexcellent.

  61. Please pray that the Lord would deliver his people from evil men; That the Lord would preserve his people from violent men, who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually. Pray against the spirit of anti Christ, false witness, terrorism hatred and violence that good would overcome evil. Please pray and intercede without ceasing that God’s will be done in the lives of the world’s leaders and for our leaders to seek God and listen to Him. Pray that they would be surrounded by godly counsel and, that our leadership would personally know God and the salvation found through faith in Jesus Christ alone. That we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. God can turn the hearts of kings. Earnestly pray that the people of America and its leaders will humble themselves and seek the Lords face and turn from their wicked ways. Pray that the Lord would hear from heaven and forgive our countries sins and heal our land. God Bless America Pray that the Lord would send workers into the harvest and grant peace in America, that we may lie down and no one will make us afraid. That the Lord would remove wild beasts from the land, and that the sword will not pass through our country and that President Trump along with our leaders be filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might to declare the sins of Gods people. Please pray for revival and that the Lord would pour out his spirit on his servants, throughout the world both men and women. Pray for the peace of Israel. Gods will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus Name, Amen.

  62. I actually found this article by searching for “War Room Bathroom”! I have very limited space and honestly, the bathroom was the only place I could think of to be able to close the door and focus on the Lord. I was well aware of how odd it might be, so I wanted to “google” it and see if anyone else had done the same thing. I am glad to know I’m not alone!

This world needs prayer warriors and I am ready to report for duty!

Keep on fighting the good fight, ladies!!!!!

  63. 4 years ago I gave my life to Christ amid the findings I was a sinner and the wife I had being persued by a “cristian” she eventually left and I was devastated. Now the single father of two children. Their mom has little to do with her children. I used to pray daily thinking the enemy had ahold of them. After years of prayer she still has little contact with our children. Reading the Bible and losing faith that there would be change. After all God is in control, my prayers seem useless if my prayer is not aligned with Gods will. On the other hand, God does not go against his own words. Is it in gods plan for her to somewhat abandoned her own children for her new life and seemingly love of self. So confusion sets in and I’m lost as to my prayer life. I pray for my children I pray for others I pray for my children’s mother. I pray for her new life. Basically I pray for God’s will to be done. Given up for asking God for reconciliation as it does not seem it would ever happen. For our children and their future they seem to have lost a mother. I don’t really believe that this would be God’s will. Today I’m devoting to a better prayer life to become a prayer warrior.

  64. I am 63 years old and have bee rededicated to God since 1994 when I joined y 1st Nazarene Church. The 2nd one I joined 20 years ago in 1997. I have basically “grown up” in this church. (I was raised Episcopalian). Anyway, I’ve been going to do this war room for quiet some time but between health issues s& having to move(Oct 24th), just haven’t gotten around to it. Tonite I’m finishing up my office, and I’ve decided I have everything here I need; desk, journals, keyboard & music. and I always have a chair with me since I’m in a wheelchair. Ha! And since I live by myself, I don’t have to close the door. I pray for all you lLadies’ out there & your famiies that you all have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed 2018! Sincerely, Jane

  65. Hi i am 14 and i love Jesus as my savior but i don’t have a good spot to make a war room. Would a spot on my wall work or does it have to be isolated and when i do try to pray and write down stuff about the Lord i get easily distracted or feel like it i can not pray or even think about God like my mind is stuck in honey how can i “fix” this or do somthing to help so i can get closer to God

  66. Wow I am so Inspired by everybody sharing sis I am in the process of buying a new home and it has beautiful closet that I’ve already decided will be my new war room but while in transition I took a trifold bulletin board and created that as my war room wall posting my favorite prayers and people that I wanted to pray for it’s been such a blessing to have that prayer is so powerful create so many miracles in my life thank you for this site ????????

  67. I am truly grateful that I stumbled on these posts/comments. I have struggled to find a place in my “busy apartment” to pray. I sit on the couch for the most part and have all my writing books and reading material there. However it seems as tho I live in grand central station. But seeing all the wonderful comments re: other places that can be used as alternate prayer rooms has helped me immensely.

  68. my prayer room in a small one bedroom unit is my bed, It just the most convenient and loving place to each morning with a coffee, and with my cat and dog laying still asleep in the bed, I feel a sense off security and love and each morning I have communion.
