Cue the Confetti!  Today We Begin!!!

{If you don’t have your Journal yet – get it now – it’s at its lowest price – just $8.09.}

I am so excited to begin the Book of Numbers. I know that some see the start of this book as dry and boring but as I read over it – preparing for our time together – I have grown more and more excited to begin!

I have already learned so much from just the first few chapters as God has Moses number the people.

Here’s 3 lessons I saw in the first 3 chapters:

1.)  I see God numbering the warriors and the worshippers (the Levites) and the different roles of God’s people.  They all matter – they all count!

2.)  I see God organizing their camps and putting His tent at the center – reminding me that God is to be the center our lives.

3.)  Look at how organized their camps are!  Our God is a God of order.

There are more golden nuggets tucked into these texts.  If we meditate on what we read – I believe God will speak to us mightily.  So I don’t want to give away all I’m learning now – I’ll save it for this Friday when we meet again here on the blog – but for now – here’s an overview of the Book of Numbers.

Book of Numbers Overview

Purpose: Numbers tells the story of how the nation of Israel prepared to enter into the Promised Land, how they were disobedient, and how they prepared to try again. Like the Nation of Israel, we are given second chances.

Author: Moses

Date: 1450-1410 BC

Setting: The Wildnerness of Sinai and the lands south and east of Canaan.

Key Verse: The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. (Numbers 6:24-25)

The book of Numbers begins with the children of Israel preparing for their journey to the Promised Land. They have received the law – and now a census must be taken. So, the people are counted (specifically, men for war). Then, the people are set apart for God and so, the journey begins.

With the beginning of the journey comes the beginning of the complaining. From food to leadership, the people are unhappy. They arrive at Kadesh, and the twelve spies are sent in. Ten come out with fear. Two, Joshua and Caleb, come out ready to do battle and possess what God has already given to them. Unbelief strikes the camp – and because of their unbelief, the current generation will not go into the Promised Land- and the wandering begins.

The ending is similar to the beginning. A new generation is preparing to go into the land. They are set apart and numbered.

The Layout of the Book:

  1. Preparation for the Journey (1:1-10:10)
  2. The First Journey to the Promised Land (10:11-14:45)
  3. Wandering (15:1-21:35)
  4. Approaching the Promise Land for the Second Time (22:1-36:13)

Throughout the book of Numbers, we see wandering and rebellion. We’ll be forced to take a deeper look at our own faith. Are we in a place of wandering – a place where we are stuck because we won’t live out our faith?

The book of Numbers is going to ask us to walk along side Israel, to learn from their mistakes, and to see our patient God of second chances as we head to the Promised Land of the abundant Christian life.

  5. I’ve not read Numbers since reading the entire bible on my own, 4years ago when my walk with the Lord Jesus really started to transform me by leaps and bounds! I’m looking forward to reading it this time with a women’s group, I have a feeling I will glean a lot of things different this time around.
Father God, thank you that you sent your Word to me to read, and thank you that I have the ability to read your word. Please speak to me, through your Word, as I begin reading it with this women’s group, help me to read your Word the way You would have me understand it. I ask that you woul reveal yourself to me Father……… in your son’s holy, holy, Holy name I pray.

  6. I wasn’t planning to continue with Numbers, but I can’t resist. The break with “Making our Homes a Haven” was so inviting and this community of faith is so embracing. Thank you for this beautiful start to time together in God’s Word. [To you and your leadership team –Rosilind, Mandy, Misty & Bridget–Blessings!]

    1. Charlisie,

Yay!!! I’m so glad you came back – I think that’s the Spirit of God drawing you!!!

The first 10 chapters make this a hard read – press through them – on the other side there are so many lessons to learn from this book of the Bible.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  7. Hi, I’m new to these studies! I just read chapter 1 and wanted to share some of my thoughts. In verses 4-16 God chose men from each tribe to help Moses and Aaron take the census. Observation #1: I doubt that Moses and Aaron knew every person in Israel! But God did, and He could see their hearts too. He knew which men would be just right for the job. Observation #2: He helped Moses and Aaron. He gave them what they needed to complete the task. Application #1: God knows me and He sees my heart. He even knows me better than I know myself! I am not lost in a crowd to Him! Application #2: God always equips us to complete the tasks He has given us. He never leaves us floundering and without resources. 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Heb. 13:20-21.
    Blessings!

    1. Pamela – welcome!!

Thank you so much for sharing them and I’ll see you on Instagram or Facebook daily. I love our discussions there!!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  8. Will there be small groups again for Numbers? I’ve usually been contacted by the small group leader (from the previous group I’ve participated in), but that hasn’t happened this time. Is it too late?

    1. Hi Amy,

We regroup 3 times a year – at the start of the new year, start of the summer and start of the fall. So there is no regrouping for this session since we just regrouped at the start of September. If you are looking for a group to join – they will open again in the New Year. So sorry – but join us on Instagram and Facebook daily (http://www.facebook.com/goodmorninggirlswlw ) where we are discussing the readings there!! Hope to see you over there.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  9. Thanks, Courtney! I was just wondering since I had been part of the same group for Proverbs and Acts but didn’t hear anything from my group leader for Numbers. I still get a lot out of following along on Facebook!

  10. Yes excited to get back wig irks, and new friends joining! I miss our iron sharpening iron and gleaning from what the Lord shows us. Thanks for always putting this together. Love you sis !!

  11. OOOhhhh… I was waiting for this! Very happy to be part of it! Thanks so much for sharing this, a very complete study resources! Blessings Courtney! and all the team!

  12. Joining again for the book of Numbers. I never really considered the amount of people called and curious as to why the Levites were left to care for the tabernacle.

  13. How do I join a group? I read Courtney’s book and loved it. I’m a stay home mom with 3 kids under the age of 4 and I need accountability to do any of this.

    1. I just saw an earlier post you made about regrouping. How do I get on a list so that a leader can contact me for the next opening session?

    2. Welcome Mrs. May,

We regroup 3 times a year – at the start of the new year, start of the summer and start of the fall. So there is no regrouping for this session since we just regrouped at the start of September. If you are looking for a group to join – they will open again in the New Year. We do not have a contact list – but please watch here on the blog between the week of December 28th and January 4th. We will be regrouping during that time.

I’m so glad you are planning to join us!!!

Until then, I invite you to join our daily discussions on Instagram ( http://www.instagram.com/womenlivingwell ) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/goodmorninggirlswlw ) where we are discussing the daily readings there!! Hope to see you over there.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  14. I’m so excited to be starting my bible study journey with you wonderful women of God. I’m new to this so may need some encouragement along the way…God Bless you

  15. I’m loving getting my younger daughter involved in bible study with me. Would love also, for the kids study to be in book form too, not just printable. *wink, wink. That would be amazing.

    1. Bridgett – I’m so glad to hear that your daughter is studying with you!!! There’s nothing better than that! Thanks for your suggestion as well. 😉 It’s a good one!!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  16. Good morning Love,
I have been reading your blogs for years. You always have such good high excitement about life, homeschool, etc. Do you ever feel stagnant? As a homeschool mom, I have been going through burn out and has been a difficult walk for me lately. Any suggestions how to rekindle that fire?

  17. I wanted to say Thank You. I happened to your website and I realize that it was an answer to a prayer that I have been praying for the past month and half to really grow spiritually. To understand how to study the Bible and not just read it. I was looking online at Amazon and it recommended the journal. I didn’t know what it was but noticed the Good Morning Girls website and thought to check it out. So glad I did, I discovered your S.O.A.K. and highlighting method, as well as the fact that a few days prior you all started the study of Numbers. I immediately jumped in and even created a Facebook page; something I never wanted to do, just so I could participate in the discussions. I don’t have anyone to do the study with so it’s nice to be able to post and view others comments online. I am still working my way through the site but came across the fact that you have forums. They are closed now, but I can’t wait for January; hoping to find a GMG Forum or Group where I can really interact more personally with others. I appreciate you keeping this site going and given so many people an opportunity to truly read and understand the word of God.

    1. Welcome Nascent!!

I am so excited to hear your story of how you found us and jumped right in!! That’s wonderful! The last week in December/first week in January we will be regrouping with the open forum. Watch for the end of the year announcements so you can join a group – or if you have a few friends in real life you want to invite – you can form your own group too!

      Keep walking with the King,
      Courtney
