The Book of Mark Overview

We are going to be on the move with Christ! The book of Mark was written to the church in Rome, to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. Mark takes a different approach than the other gospels, focusing more on what Jesus did and less on what he said.

Mark starts with John the Baptist in the wilderness and moves quickly into the baptism of Jesus, the temptation in the desert, the calling of the disciples, the public ministry of Jesus Christ and then to the climax of Christ on the cross and the resurrection of our Savior.

Mark shows Jesus in a way that connects us intimately with Him. We see Him as the suffering servant,  serving and eventually giving his life as the ultimate sacrifice, for our sins.

The Purpose: To present the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Author: John Mark. Mark was not one of the original 12 disciples but was the accompaniment of Paul and Barnabas in the book of Acts. (If you struggle with second chances, this is a beautiful display of how the Lord can use us! John Mark struggled in the book of Acts and yet God still used him to pen a book that we still read today! To God be the glory!)

Time Period: written between AD 55 and 65

Mark was probably the first gospel written and records more miracles than any of the others. All the other gospels combined, quote all but 31 verses of Mark.

Key Verse: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Major Themes of the Book of Mark

Jesus as the Son of God: In the book of Mark, we see Jesus as God himself, come to earth. He is both fully God and fully man and his divinity is clearly seen in his power displayed through miracles.

Jesus as a Servant: Christ came to serve and the giving of His life was the ultimate act of service. With this example in mind, we also should serve God and others. Greatness in the kingdom of God comes through service.

Jesus as a Miracle Worker: Mark records more miracles than any other gospel and more miracles than sermons. Jesus didn’t just tell people who He was, He showed them.

The Spreading of the Gospel: Jesus gave the gospel first to the Jews and then to the Gentiles as well. Jesus challenges his disciples’ -and us- to go into all the world and preach the gospel. We need to reach out beyond our comfort zone and borders, to share the gospel everywhere!

The book of Mark is going to take us on a whirlwind trip back to the time of Christ. It is going to push us to live like Christ did. Be ready for action – and to take action! Be open to God moving in your life to serve others!

I did not realise Mark was written by a different Mark so Thankyoufor putting that in there!

  2. Just to let you know there is 2 typos… you put job as the name of the kid’s tracing work and left the job book picture at the bottom of the post 🙂
Amazing amazing bucket load of work that you have done though!
    Thankyou!!!!

  3. Really looking forward to Mark!! Doing this one with my teens too!! (we did Job together, it was so amazing to go through it with them) 🙂
    Thanks Courtney!

  4. Hi

I was wondering if it was possible to buy an e-version of the journal for this study? Then I can just print off what I want. Not sure how the pages are laid out, as the preview on Amazon doesn’t show much.

    thanks
    Helen

    1. Hi Helen,

I’m sorry – there is not an eversion available and Amazon automatically creates the “look inside” feature and I do not get to control which pages they show. If you want to see what the inside looks like – visit me on Instagram and scroll down through my feed to see pictures at http://www.instagram.com/womenlivingwell

If you want the short version of the journal – it does not include the daily verse or reflection question- you can print it for free from here: https://womenlivingwell.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Mark-Journal-Short-Version.pdf

      Hope that helps!
      Courtney 🙂

  5. I am so ready to study the book of Mark. I just recently came across this website and was very impressed with all the work that has gone in to make it so inviting. I am a retired person caring for my husband who is a cancer patient. I usually am up between 4 and 5 but slept to 8 this morning. I could not believe I was late getting into God’s Word, but I am a firm believer that there was a reason that I slept in. Thanks and will be praying for you and all who take the time to study with you.

  6. Regarding the discussion question for today, yes! My husband felt the call to ministry at a time in our lives when it made no sense. All of our friends thought we were crazy, but w/ our 4 children, we said goodbye to our jobs, family (even when my mom was near death), friends, schools, home and sold most of our things as we left for seminary for 3 years. I did fly back to be with my mom the last week of her life, but it was still one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. But God has blessed us beyond words! I have to admit, it’s never a dull moment being led by the Spirit! lol But it is very freeing. <3

  7. Thank you for the encouragement to read a specific part of God’s Word each day. I am looking forward to what He has to say to my heart in the following days. Again thank you!

  8. Hi Courtney,
I have only recently discovered you website in Australia and am looking forward to doing the study on Mark as we lead up to Easter. Thank you for all your preparation and the way you have so beautifully presented the study. Blessings Catherine

  9. How do I sign up? I want to!!!! God is calling my name! I can hear Him loud and clear, “study my words, listen and pray.” There is my peace.

  10. I love this, I am glad God put you in my path. I am on the book of Mark with you all and I am just hungry for the word, this is great since we are always on computers anyways.

  11. I have recently reached the point of a big change in my life. It’s not that I feel “called” by God, but I have become very very unhappy with my work and I made the decision last Tuesday to resign. I teach so I will finish out the school year and then next fall I have no idea what will be in store for my family. This reading and especially the daily verse actually lines up so well with what my pastor preached about in the sermon at church yesterday, listening to God’s still small voice. Honestly, I have absolutely no idea what God wants me to do with my life at this point. I spent six years in college doing what I thought was going to be right for my life and now I am back at square one, feeling like a failure with no sense of direction and I’m not even sure that I hear God calling me at all or how I would know if He did. I hope that if I do though I will be willing to follow Him.

    1. Caitlin,

I will pray while you’re out there walking on water! I resigned after 17 years because I had lost my passion for the classroom, but God has blessed me with opportunities I never knew were possible until I gave up everything and started praying that his path be revealed:) I will pray the same for you:)

      Janene

  12. Good evening girls, I have been looking forward to this study, as I am working recently, I do regret not able to wake up in the Word like these past few months since I’ve been unemployed but it is what it is. I know God will bring blessings for us soon, since money is tight and we need the money. But it is all in his hands, I feel a little like Job right now with everything going wrong but he is on the throne and all will work out, I am being patient ,praying and trying not to let this all get the best of me . So Good Evening girls God Bless.

  13. Thank you for making this possible. Day 1 and already enriched! I guess I need to breakdown and rejoin Facebook just to join the discussions 🙂
