Soft Sugar Cookies

This sugar cookie recipe is so easy to make with your kids. The cookies are soft and chewy and I include a recipe for homemade frosting to make them extra good. #WomenLivingWell #cookies #sugarcookies #kidfriendlyJanelle from Comfy in the Kitchen is guest posting with a recipe that has so much meaning you must read this beginning story first before seeing the recipe!
Janelle writes: “This recipe is very near and dear to my heart. Seven years ago, I was being induced to have my first baby, I decided to make cookies for all the nurses and doctors that God was sending to be part of one of the most special days of my life. I stayed up late that night dreaming of what it was going to be like being a mother…while I made these very cookies. When I took these into the hospital, I was amazed at how much joy they brought the hospital staff!
I felt as though I had a revolving door on my room…I got to meet so many people and had a great time watching everyone enjoy them! My doctor even had one after she delivered my son. Needless to say, I made these cookies for 2 more induced labors and brought them to the hospital with me…I also make them on my children’s birthdays each year. My daughter is having a birthday today and I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you this wonderful family recipe that we love so much….Enjoy!”

Sugar, butter, eggs, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, vanilla and buttermilk (I don’t typically have buttermilk on hand, so I will show you a trick)

To substitute buttermilk, you add 1 Tbsp of lemon juice to 1 cup of milk (you can also substitute vinegar if you don’t have lemon juice) let sit until needed

In a large bowl combine sugar, softened butter (I place in the microwave for 30 seconds) and eggs. Blend until creamy.

Combine the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, soda, and salt) and pour into the wet ingredients, then add vanilla and milk.

This is what it looks like…very informal

It will make a sticky/thick batter. Place in refrigerator for 1 hour (the batter will be too sticky if you skip this part)

When the dough has been in the refrigerator for 1 hour, shape a heaping tablespoonful of dough into a ball. Place 6 cookie dough balls on baking sheet and bake in an oven set at 350 for 15 mins.

While the cookies are baking start making the frosting: Butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and milk

Cookies are done! Let them sit on the cookie sheet for 1 min so they are easy to take off. Then, place on a cooling rack until ready to frost.

Beat 6 Tbsp softened butter (warmed in microwave for 30 seconds), 6 cups of powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla, and appx 3 Tbsp of milk or until desired consistency.

When cookies are completely cool, add frosting with a knife, like so. (You may color your frosting by adding food coloring)

Add sprinkles to your liking!

My little princess couldn’t wait to frost hers! (as you can see the frosting melted a bit)

These cookies are ready to hand out to the preschoolers at my daughter’s school tomorrow! MMMM!!

Soft Sugar Cookies:

2 c sugar

1 cup butter (softened)

2 eggs

5 cups flour

2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk mixed with 1 Tbsp lemon juice OR white vinegar)

Preheat oven to 350

Cream sugar, butter and eggs together. Add flour and dry ingredients together, pour into creamed mixture. Add milk and vanilla and beat well. Place dough in refrigerator for 1 hour. Roll dough into balls (heaping tablespoon size) and place 6 to a sheet to allow spreading. Bake for 15 mins. When done, keep on baking sheet for 1 min so they are easier to take off. Transfer to cooking rack until ready to frost and decorate!

Frosting:

6 cups powdered sugar

6 Tbsp butter (softened)

3 Tbsp (appx) of milk or until desired consistency

1 tsp vanilla

Beat all ingredients well until smooth and creamy.

Thank you, Janelle, for a great story and recipe!

  1. I was planning on making sugar cookies with my little boys today, and decided on this one. The batter is in the fridge, and it already tastes dreamy! 🙂 Look forward to tasting the finished product later on. 🙂

Question – how would recommend a 2.5 year old "helping" out in the kitchen and keeping a 1-year old occupied in the meantime?

  2. Melissa, you will love these cookies!! Such a great question too….my youngest is 2 and she is starting to "help" as you can see. When she was 1 I put a "pack n play" in the kitchen area and gave her pots and pans to play with inside of it. I also would put her in a highchair with some cheerios and let her watch. It is challenging! There are times I make dinner during nap time and have to put it in the refrigerator and warm it up later!

  3. Ok, you convinced me. I think this will be our project today! LOL

It helped that my 3-year old was sitting on my lap as I read this post and he very sweetly asked, "Mommy, can we make these?" How can I refuse!?

  4. I have been looking for a sugar cookie recipe (one that's easy and tasty, because the one I was passed down from my grandmother is extremely time-consuming…especially since I have a 2-yr-old and 6-month-old in the house). This looks like it will be perfect! One question that may seem silly…is the flour self-rising or plain? Reason I'm asking is because it looks like I have everything here to make these without making a grocery store run…thanks for your recipes! I've tried several of them without fail.

  5. i did the very same thing!! i brought some gift boxes filled with some goodies…my best friend is a nurse and suggested it. she said they really appreciate those kinds of things…. THEY WERE TOTALLY blessed!!! i love that you make cookies on they're b-day now!!! so special!

  6. Oh yum! SOFT sugar cookies are not always easy to make or find. I love soft sugar cookies with icing – and am going to try this recipe with MY girls this season. Thanks for sharing it!!!

  7. What a beautiful story – and beautiful cookies too! The recipe sounds delicious and your photos are lovely.

  8. So amazing that you think of others when so many woman consider their labor a self-centered time. I know I always have. "Rub my feet, Michael! Get me ice chips!"

I must digress, it's not polite to talk about issues like bare feet in the kitchen.

  9. @Praise and Coffee- Thank you! @ Courtney- no, these would not make good roll out cookies, but I can share a roll out recipe (roll outs are actually a lot harder than they appear!) @Christin-So sweet!! @Amy-All purpose flour my friend..lol, I am all about using what I have on hand! @living-love that your grandson likes to cook!! A self- sufficient young man in the making..wohoo!!!@Dandi-great minds 🙂 @Queeny, 21st and Lisa- thank you…you will love these, let me know how they turn out when you make them!! @Dar- I am no perfect woman while pregnant, lol! I have my stories, trust me! But, this is one of my shining moments..haha, I don't think the other moment would be blogworthy, lol..but it proves I am only human 🙂 Love to you all!!!! ~Janelle

  15. It looks great! I love sprinkles. These cookies are so cute AND THIS IS perfect for my cousin’s birthday party. I will try this one for her. I’m sure she will like it. Thanks for this recipe.

  16. I guess this recipe is the best treat for my children. Since last week, they can't eat solid foods, especially sweets, because they just came from the dentist. My wife prefers to have dental check-ups for our children with one of the dentists of Myrtle Beach because they're trustworthy. I'll keep this recipe so next week so that I can make this.

  17. How sweeet! I might steal this idea! I am due December 27th and am ready for this little girl to come! Maybe, these will help encourage her! Thanks for sharing!

  18. Another great recipe! I can’t wait to try my hand at the homemade icing. I’ve never been successful at it. And what a neat idea to bring them to the hospital. I’m sure the nurses really appreciated it!

  19. What a special story, Janelle!

I’m going to make these cookies this week . . . hopefully today, but I must get the laundry done first. 😉

    Have a blessed day!

  20. Love the recipe, it’s wonderful. My family had a great time making these for Christmas! Also was wondering what is the minimum duration to leave the batter in the fridge, for the cookies?
