A Vlog Demonstrating My Bible Study Tips

This video is filled with my tips and tricks for studying God’s word everyday. I hold up my favorite tools and share how I use them. So check it out and if you are receiving this in an email click here to view the video!

A little one came into the room in the middle of the video…and I lost track of some of what I wanted to share lol!!!  So when I held up my journal at the end – I neglected to say that I use it to write in my favorite verses, prayers, quotes from books I’m reading (I like to log the books I’m reading each year and take notes on them), I take notes on youtube videos or itunes sermons in my journal and even on blogs I’m surfing and reading.  My journals – which used to just be a private journey – have turned into resources for me as I blog.  I had NO idea that 20 years of journaling were preparing me for this ministry.  But now I see more clearly God’s hand in my life!  All glory to him!

Do you have any Bible study tips you can share with me!  I’d love to hear them! Please share them in the comment section!!

  1. Thank you for sharing your tips. I really liked the idea of using a photo album for memorizing scripture. I’m going to start doing that myself. 🙂

  2. I love the highlighting and colored pencils idea. I use a pink highlighter to mark all the verses on being a wife and mother. My kids have their first index cards with their memory verses for the school year. I am going to buy some photo albums and store them there instead of in an index box. Thanks for the tips 🙂

  3. Courtney, you are so real! I love your tips and I especially am glad that you told us more about your journal. I used to write in a journal ALL the time. But since I got married and then started blogging, I have lost that. A notebook is a super idea. I have recorded things on papers all over the house and can’t seem to find anything! You inspire and encourage me so much. I am so pumped to study God’s word lately. I want to develop this habit and teach my children someday how to use these tips.

  4. Thanks for sharing such great and practical tips. I love the idea of writing out scripture. There is power in the words of the Bible and I Love to see that in writing. God bless, deb

  5. I really liked the video. It was very helpful. If you would be willing to share I would like to know what is your favorite Study Bible?

  6. Thank you for sharing. My small group always takes a break for the summer from our regular Bible study and I have to say that I always feel a little lost! I absolutely love our Bible studies, but I feel like it keeps me from practicing studying the Bible for myself. I really like how you said, “…squeeze all the nourishment that you can from the scripture…” and “…writing out the verses helps you to meditate on the words…” (or something to that effect). The next time we take a break, I will definitely use those methods.

I’m glad you clarified a a bit more on how you use your journal. I have been keeping a Prayer Notebook for several years now and it too has become an invaluable resource. I love that I have a place to record quotes and meaning things that have inspired me. It’s also a place that helps me focus on my prayers. I explained it on youtube for a friend…maybe it would be of some interest to you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPqnhlAX35M

Thanks for allowing the Lord to use you to reach soo many women to live well.

  7. Hi! Thanks for sharing. It’s exciting to see journaling that moves beyond reading scripture and saying “this is how I feel today.”

    A few things I thought I’d share:
First, you touched on this a bit with your colored pencils but, my dad has color coordinated his whole bible with a common system

My system (blue=faith, green,=promises, pink=commands, orange=warnings, yellow=praise) is based on Richard Bennett’s “Food For Faith” which suggested asking of every scripture “Is there a promise to claim, command to follow, example to emulate, or warning to heed?”

Secondly, the acronym my IBS prof taught was OICA which is observe, interpret, correlate, and apply. I’ve really found this method, especially the idea of systematically correlating scripture, very helpful.

    Thanks again!

  8. Thanks for sharing Courtney.
A thing I love to do is ask the Lord questions as I read and journal the thoughts that come to mind and then see if what my thoughts/the thoughts the Lord gave me really match up to scripture. I love to ask questions like, “What does this show me about people? And how can I relate?” “Lord, what do you want me to take from this? What principles can I apply?” “Lord, what does this show me about You?” And I love how He speaks through His Word! We are so blessed!!!
