Psalm 145:4,5 says “One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
My mother is my role model for motherhood. She and I are similar in our love and passion for God’s word but we are very different in personality. I’ve always been a sanguine and she has always been a little more reserved.
The best thing my mom ever did for me was equip me for life by teaching me to fall in love with God and his word. Through her example and love of scriptures – I too fell in love with her Savior. She taught me how to read the word and apply it and how to always go to the scriptures first for answers in times of trouble. She taught me how to share my faith and not be ashamed. She taught me how to go against the flow in a public school and be secure in my faith.
Mom always had her colored pencils on the kitchen table where she worked hard preparing to lead her precept Bible studies. If we had a problem – mom had the solution with a verse attached and if mom said she was praying – we knew – something was going to happen – because mom’s prayers were powerful!

Beautifully written, Courtney! What a wonderful testament to your mother! I’m certain she is proud of the woman you’ve become!
And might I add, I really enjoyed your comment about how she taught you to go against the flow in a public school! I read a book recently, can’t remember the author or exact title (something about Grace-Based Parenting) that talks about how Christians, especially the Evangelical movement, have virtually abandoned public schools. And yet, we are asked to be Light for the World…to let our Light Shine…how can we do this when we run away…
And yet, I too am just as guilty…pulling my children out and enrolling them in Catholic school. And yes, the faith-based component of daily religion class and weekday Mass was part of what compelled me to enroll them (as well as family history, my kiddos are 4th generation to go to Catholic schools) am I not abandoning my call to let my children’s light shine forth?!!!

Embrace the love of your mother. Mine passed away from cancer seven years ago when I was only 33. I miss the true grandma for my children but I am so touched when I see other women with their mothers. Stay close. Truly mothers are a blessing from God and the glue that holds most families together.
