Wow! Wow! Wow! These really are the easiest doughnuts ever! If you like Elephant Ears or Funnel Cakes…you are going to LOVE these- they taste just like them. Your family is going to run into the kitchen when they wake up to the smell of these “almost homemade” doughnuts.

I simply took a 1/4 tsp measuring spoon and pressed it into a buttermilk biscuit {regular sized}.

I folded the flap and pressed it in. No biggie. You can use any tool you would like to make a small hole-but most people have a measuring spoon.

Do this to the entire can of biscuits. Meanwhile, heat vegetable oil in a pan on high heat. Drop all doughnuts into hot oil and let cook for appx 2 mins a side until lightly browned.

Take doughnuts out with tongs and place on a paper towel lined plate and let cool for 2 mins.

  1. I’ve made these before and they are indeed heavenly!! My only suggestion is that you completely remove the middle and fry those up for donut holes!! My kids love them!! (I use a medicine cup, like from a nyquil bottle, to remove the middle!)

  2. My husband and I used to make these all the time when we first got married 🙂 It was such a fun snack. lol…except I just poked my (CLEAN!) finger through the center to make the hole 🙂 lol…and then a few I would tear into 4 pieces and roll into a ball to make donut holes. Totally cheating, I know.

We rarely buy things like canned biscuits anymore, but these are a fun occasional treat 🙂

  3. My late grandmother used to make donuts for us this way! They were so yummy!! And a special treat for us since we only had them when grandma made them!!

  4. I ve made these for years for my family and they LOVE them. I use the clear plastic cap off the Hersheys chocolate for my donut holer…only now they make it flip top but I still have the caps from when they made those. and they are also good pressed into a long john, glazed, and add some chocolate frosting!! but I must say, the ones in the photos here look better than mine!! I have trouble getting the heat adjusted just right.

  5. I made these a couple of weeks ago and they are so good!!! They were the easiest thing, so I think I’ll be adding them to Sat. morning breakfasts and maybe even on Christmas morning! Also, I punched the doughnut hole out, made a littl ball and fried up doughnut holes!! YUMMY!

  6. I have to admit i was a little disappointed to discover that this comes from a package. I’m curious if anyone ever does this with a standard biscuit recipe? I have a fantastic biscuit recipe that my family LOVES but the dough is more dense than pill bury dough. Or any good recipes for ACTUAL homemade donuts? 😉

    1. I tried it with my homemade biscuit dough and did NOT get great results…I had intended to play around with it though, so maybe I’ll do that some more. I also have a great real homemade donut recipe that I’m going to be sharing soon 🙂

      1. See my comment below. I forgot to mention too that I had homemade biscuit dough–I try not to use those tubes, but maybe it was necessay here!

  7. We learned how to do this in Girl Scouts-a very long time ago! We LOVED them and made them at home many times after that. I’ll use coconut oil to fry them in now, and MIGHT try it with homemade biscuits. Thanks!

  8. Ummmm….I think this was the first time in my 39 years that I’ve fried something. How hot is the oil supposed to be? How can we tell when the oil is ready? Does it matter if I substitue canola for vegetable….I did. It stunk up the whole house and there’s this blueish haze lol. I’ve opened up all of the windows with screens. I’m guessing this isn’t part of the normal process of donut making. The first four burned. Then I turned it down and started doing one at a time. I think each was “done” in less than 30 seconds. They aren’t pretty like yours, a lot darker. I was worried if I made this unhealthy treat that my kids would ask all the time for me to make them. I don’t think I have to worry. How long til the smell goes away. My inlaws are coming to babysit in 8 hours…..will it be smelly yet then? I think this might be for girls who can “fry”. I’ve LOVED all of the other recipes I’ve tried here and make them often. I’ll save the donuts for the professionals at the bakery I guess. Hey, at least I tried, right? They are eating them– I can’t tell if it’s a pity eat, or not. 🙂

  9. I too poke out the middles for donut holes- so fun and yummy to pop in MY mouth while I fix the rest for the kiddos 🙂 Also, I sometimes use chocolate frosting (yes, the kind in the can!) instead of cinnamon sugar-yum!

  10. I tried making them this morning and had no luck. It’s embarressing that I can’t even do an easy recipe like this. My biscuits did not cook in the middle; they were still goey. What did I do wrong?

  11. Alex u have to fry them on low heat or the out will burn and inside won’t b dn and try flat ting the biscuit a lil bit I have had this problem to don’t give up they r delicious !!

  12. Just made these for the first time, and I found that the high setting was way too high – I had crispy, very brown donuts after about ten seconds of frying! I will try them again on medium low heat next time!

  13. Made these and Handsome gave them the stamp of approval. They were so yummy. We may or may not have eaten all of them over the course of the day. Like other posters mentioned, the temp of the oil is super important. I found that it took less than 30 seconds on each side on my electric stove on medium. Either way, we loved them so much that I posted a link back to your post on my blog, with attribution. Thanks for posting!!!

  14. My momma used to make these for us when we were little! BUT… I must admit I feel so guilty wasting all the oil…. Do u save and “reuse” the oil later for another batch?!

  15. ALSO… THANKYOU for your sidebar “talks” on being a obedient wife to our Lord by ministering to our husbands. It almost brought me to tears about how God views serving in the home as precious as rubies… The world beats us DOWN on being in the home… And I have allowed it to get to me and make me feel worthless at times, I needed this reminder today!

  16. My Mama and I made those donuts back when I was a lil thing…in the early 70’s. 😉 we recently found a deep fryer at a consignment store, and this is what I told MHH and his youngest boy we need to make first! Some things never change. 🙂
