Motherhood is a Huge Time Zapper!

I remember when my son lost his first tooth. He swallowed the tooth – which made for a little pickle when I tried to figure out how we were going to do the whole “tooth fairy” thing!

Daddy wrote a note to the tooth fairy explaining the situation and – good news – the tooth fairy did indeed show up! But not without my husband and I first having a discussion about the going rate for a tooth these days. My husband suggested a high price – I on the other hand tend to be cheap, so I threw out a low bid and we ended up in the middle.

Considering the cost…do you realize how much these kids have cost us? I’m not even talking about money here – I’m talking about time and energy!

Before I had my first child, I thought the hard part was going to be the pregnancy and delivery. Boy, was I wrong! First it was my nursing struggles but now the hardest part for me is taking the time and energy to train my children to do what is right.

  1. Motherhood is an investment with such great eternal returns. It is hard work, but so very worth it! Great post!
    P.S.
We did the tooth fairy when our oldest daughter was little, considering it traditional fun, but not with our subsequent kids because we didn’t want them “believing” in anyone they couldn’t see except God. Funny story…when our daughter was older she told us that when she was little she imagined an intricate tall castle all made out of childrens teeth. ha! 🙂

    1. I have a video on youtube titled: “Why do we lie to our children?” It’s a harsh title, mainly to attract viewers. :/ Check it out if you are interested. 🙂

  2. Haha! Reminds me of when my son lost his first tooth. It came out while brushing his teeth & fell down the open drain. I even unscrewed it to try to fish it out but it was gone. I was devastated and when I tried to explain the whole Tooth Fairy thing, he was incredulous that anyone would believe that!!! But we did it anyway to be fun and yes, my husband was more generous than I thought reasonable!!

  3. I was the generous one for the toothfairy, my husband couldn’t believe the going rate for teeth! We settled on a more special gift for tooth #1 and less for the remaining teeth.

Yes, they do require a lot of time and energy to train them the right way to go….but, like you, I wouldn’t want to be spending my time any other way! 🙂

  4. Hi Courtney! As always, I loved your post. I especially liked the comment about “corralling the children from one activity to another”, ashamed to admit I’m guilty! This post just confirmed what i was already convicted of earlier in the week about taking more time to actually sit and play with my three sweet peas =) May I ask you what you explain to your children about the tooth fairy? I admit that I was surprised that when I read that part of your post. I have an extremely analytical and logical five year old who asks if just about everything is real. I never wanted to lie to him so when he asks me I’m honest about whatever it is. None of my friends children ask this question so I havent found anyone who an relate. He has a wonderfully active imagination and I encourage him always to use it. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!
