My 2012-2013 Homeschool Curriculum& WLWW Link-Up Party!

We are really excited to get back to homeschooling!  This year Alexis enters 2nd grade and Alexander enters 3rd grade and Grandpa will be joining us again on Fridays to homeschool for 4 hours – 3 cheers for the world’s greatest Dad (besides my husband of course 🙂 ! )

To prepare for our new school year, this week we have been attending Classical Conversation’s Practicum which is a learning camp for kids and a training camp for moms.

We will once again be attending a local Classical Conversations class on Tuesdays.

To go along with the Classical Conversations Curriculum we have begun an awesome lap book created by Karen Gill from WisdomandRighteousness.com.  If you are doing Classical Conversations too – I highly recommend you check out these printable lapbooks here.  They are an excellent resource and tool that we have just begun to use for the new year!

So here’s our full list of curriculum for 2012-2013:

Classical Conversations provides our history, science, geography, grammar, latin, art and some music.

For math, we are using Saxon.

For Phonics, we are using All About Spelling.

For literature and grammar, we are using Sonlight.

For Handwriting, we are using Handwriting without Tears (cursive).

For Beginning Typing we are using Typing Instructor.

For Bible, we read daily out of the NIV Family Reading Bible and the kids memorize verses and do daily devotions through the Olympians Program at our church.

My son is playing Flag Football again this summer/fall with the local public school and continues to take Karate. In the winter, he plans to try out for the public school basketball team (he has been playing on the team for 2 years and practicing all summer for tryouts this year!)  My daughter is continuing her gymnastics tumbling class and piano lessons and they will both return to the Sunday Evening Olympians program at our church.

So it’s a full year of fun and learning and we can’t wait to get started!

Chime in – do you homeschool?  What curriculum do you use?

  1. It’s that time of year again. I’ve been organizing and going through all our new curriculum this week. We use My Fathers World, Singapore Math, Reason for Spelling, First Language Lessons, Rosetta Stone, and Apologia.

  2. Our books arrived on Monday. We are beginning our 17th year of homeschooling, so I have a lot of the basics already. This was a year to purchase a few wants along with some needs.
I have 8 students this year, from Senior down to Kindergartener. : )
We do a little bit of a lot of different things. Teaching Textbooks for Math; Beautiful Feet and Truthquest for History; Progeny Press study guides for Literature. Lots more, but that is a post in itself!!

We start back up on August 27th. I am getting excited. The kids are chomping at the bit. That’s what I love about homeschooling – the kids enthusiasm!!

  3. Oh, you and I are using so much of the same curriculum. You know, after 10 years of homeschooling, last year was my first year at Classical Conversations. It was my best year yet! I am going to tutor, too. I have one in Challenge A. I think it’s going to be a great year 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!

  4. This is our first year homeschooling and I am keeping my 2nd grader in the curriculum used at the Christian school he attended last year – ABeka, which I actually used to teach! I need to keep it simple for myself for our first year. My K-4 son will be doing a combination of Hands-on Homeschooling, with ABeka manuscript for writing, and IXL.com for Math, along with a first grade math workbook (He is very advanced in Math – the main reason we are homeschooling; I didn’t want him to be bored in preschool). For Bible we are starting out the year doing Clay Clarkson’s Our Family 24 Ways.

We will be doing PE & electives at co-op on Tuesdays. I am thinking of starting them in Karate, but need to get school going first before I commit to too many things.

  5. We do homeschool, and this year we’re switching things up a little bit. I looked very strongly at Sonlight; their curriculum is so well-rounded. But we’re doing an eclectic mix. Sticking with Singapore Math, Rod & Staff English, and All About Spelling (also using All About Reading for my little preschooler). Then Apologia for Bible and Science, Story of the World for history, and readers/library books for reading. My oldest is in Cub Scouts, and he’s wanting to sign up for soccer too this fall. I’m really excited about this new year. It’s fun getting it all organized and ready.:)

  6. This is our 5th year homeschooling and we are changing EVERYTHING….We are going to a Unit Study approach. We have 3 boys, grades are 11th,3rd and preK, so the unit studies are a great fit. We love Math U See and Singapore. A reason for Handwriting for the middle man and we are trying Spectrum for Phonics,Lang Arts,Vocabulary. We are also trying Spelling level C with Modern Curriculum. The oldest will also do online classes for more advanced Math and Science. We attend Art classes at our local Christian school and attend a homeschool gym class once a week for PE. We also attend classes at church on a Wednesday night and a MOPS program through our church.

  7. What do you use? Could you ask a more open ended question?! lol! I’m still trying to nail it down. I have 1st and 3rd graders this year.

Most of our subjects are an easy answer… Math: Primary (Singapore) Math, Apologia Science (in our co-op this year – Astronomy and Botany), Beautiful Feet Books – Early American History, Italic Handwriting, and we’re going to do 24 Family Ways for our morning Bible time. Language Arts is where it gets interesting… I think for my first grader we’re going to go with Learning Lang Arts through Lit. For my third grader it’s an eclectic mix – Explode the Code, English for the Thoughtful Child 2, Dictation and Copywork, and I am looking at Lit Units from Confessions of a Homeschooler and/or Progeny Press Study Guides… not completely sure where we’re going to go with that yet. I’m not very good at being “fun” so I’m leaning towards the Confessions Unit’s. 🙂

And then we are joining a co-op this year that I’m really excited about! We’ll be doing science there this year along with some other things… drama and elections in the fall. Maybe Spanish.

    Getting excited!

  8. This is our first year and with boys in 1st & 3rd grade (and an 18 mo. old) we’re using My Father’s World-Adventures, Singapore Math, Spelling Power, Primary Language Lessons, Starfall & Noah Webster. I like the idea of being able to do the unit studies so we can all work together. We’re starting to meet other homeschoolers at our church and from the community. We’re also going to be involved in Fall Soccer, Swimming, “shop class” with Daddy as teacher, and a bit of archery on the side. My biggest challenge is not getting too overwhelmed and planning too much for the year. I also volunteer and I know that it’s going to be a bit of a juggle at times, but am putting my trust in the LORD to keep us on a sane path and to see us through it all!

    1. Hooray!!! 3 cheers for your first year! I’m so excited for you guys! I hope it’s an awesome experience. It looks like you are organized and have a great plan! Have a GREAT school year!
      Courtney

  9. Fun to see!!! Are you using just the Lang Arts part of Sonlight? I’m guessing so, as you are already doing Classical Coversations.

For my 6th grade daughter we are doing:
Sonlight Core G (just read alouds and readers)
Bible: Apologia Press, Who is God?
    Lang Arts: BJU English 6
    Science: Apologia
    Math: Math U See
Ukrainian Language: History, Lang Arts and Literature

    For my 4th grade son:
Sonlight Core D (just read alouds and readers)
Bible: Apologia Press, Who is God?
    Lang Arts: Writing Tales
    Science: Apologia
    Math: Math U See
    Russian Language

    Holly, Kyiv 🙂

    1. Hey girl!! I love it when your name pops up here :)! This is our first time to try Sonlight and I’m excited! We purchased the Language Arts and readers. They just arrived and we are excited to get reading!
      Have a great year!!!
      Love ya!

  10. I have a K-4 son and this is my first year to homeschool! We kind of fell into homeschooling by default when my husband just accepted a new job a couple of weeks ago and we had to leave the (wonderful!) preschool we had planned on my son attending to move to a new city! Of course, everything is full at this point in the summer and my son is one who NEEDS some structured learning before Kindergarten. I am so very green at this and am interested to learn much, much more. We settled on the Sonlight program for 4/5 because it is so literature based and I love that flexibility at this young age. I am a trained occupational therapist and will be using the Handwriting Without Tears program for handwriting. We do not have a structured math program in place and wasn’t worried about it so much after talking to many other homeschool mothers but have enjoyed seeing what some of y’all have suggested for your preschool aged children and will try to integrate that into our year as time goes on (I get more comfortable, or my heart stops racing wondering what the heck I’m doing!) during the year. We are all very excited to begin our year!!

  11. Your blog is for sure God sent. Last week I was surfing the web for online bible studies then dicovered your blog. I homeschooled our two youngest children, one for 6 years, the youngest for twelve years. We are empty nesters now. I am currently going through your Proverbs 23
Woman bible study. Awesome! Looking forward to Colossians starting in September. God bless!

  12. I have a kindergartener and a 3-year-old who wants to do school like her sister. This is or first official year, although we have been learning since birth and we did preschool for two years. For the kindergartner, we are doing Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. We already started out, we’re on lesson 20. For math we are doing Saxon K. For handwriting we are doing A Reason for Handwriting. We are reading Bible stories every day out of storybooks, plus we’re memorizing as many verses as we can (we’re using an index card system… I think it’s a Charlotte Mason system, I got the idea from Raising Olives blog though) and discussing the verses we memorize. We aren’t doing science our history , but later in the year we will look at the human body a bit and for read alouds we’re reading the Little House series. With my preschooler we are doing some worksheets from tlsbooks.com, coloring pages that correspond with sister’s handwriting lesson, and a modified version of Saxon math K (she does the same lessons as her sister, we are just more relaxed about it). She is listening to me read the Little House books also, and memorizing the same Bible verses and listening to the same Bible stories. It’s mostly going to be her observing her sister, and she learns very well by observing!

Wow, I’m always surprised at how wordy I am. LOL.

  13. We homeschool! Entering our 4th year. 2nd grader is using Adventures in MFW for history, science, Bible. Math U See for Math and Alpha Omega Lifepacs for everything Language related. Daughter begins kindergarten. We’ll use MFW for her. I LOVE their kindergarten curriculum!!

  14. We are excited about homeschool year this year as well! I have two boys (2nd and 4th grade). We also attend Classical Conversations and have enjoyed it for the past 5 years. We use the following for our curriculum: Singapore, Math / Rod and Staff Phonics and Reading Comp for my 2nd grader / Phonetic Zoo for my 4th grader / Essentials Grammar and IEW writing / Apologia: Zoology 1, Flying Creatures / Story of the World, Vol.1, Bible and History Encyclopedia for History (I write my own history lessons) / Classical Academic Press: Song School Latin (2nd grader) and Latin for Children A (4th grader) / A free typing program online / And we are adding Spelling Workout for both boys this year to fill in some gaps of dictionary work and extra spelling practice. For Bible we are going to try and use Classical Academic Press, “God’s Great Covenant, Genesis to Ruth”.

I hope you have a great school year! Stay encouraged and thank you for the hard work you continue to do in keeping up the Blog!

  15. This is our 5th year homeschooling and it seems that each year our structure becomes more relaxed. We like the eclectic, delight directed approach. For formal lessons, we are using Horizons Math and Spelling. We also work on unit studies throughout the year by using Homeschool Share.com, Amanda Bennett and FIAR. When it comes to science, our back yard is full of wonders and nature study is the way we go. Reading is also a big thing for us. I make sure our bookshelves are full of great books and we visit our library on a weekly basis. When it comes to delight directed, that is up to my children. Each day is different and I love to see what their imaginations create.

  16. I have a second grader and a four year old son who wants to do school like his big sister. We used Sunlight last year and loved it, but with this being an election year wanted to do MFW Adventures for a little American History. We’ll be switching to Truth Quest History soon which I am very excited about! For Math we use and love Horizons (and are using the preschool package for my son), Shurley English for grammar, Spelling Power, A Reason for Handwriting (when we’re done with this book we may be switching to Zaner-Bloser) and Answers in Genesis for Science. We’re so excited about this year!! 🙂

  17. This is our first year homeschooling! My son is in first grade and daughter in pre-k. We LOVE the Charlotte Mason style of schooling so we got our subject list from SimplyCharlotteMason.com (and a lot of helpful tips!) We are using TruthQuest for history, Right Start for math (which I love!), Handwriting w/o Tears, Explode the Code, reading lists from Sonlight, SCM, and Dakota Publishing. Picture Study, Music Study, Poetry lists from SCM. My dad will be teaching Japanese via Skype to the kids (I grew up a missionary kid in Japan). We have some logic workbooks, a map skills workbook, and kumon crafty books for fun. We are memorizing the ABC verses from My ABC Bible verses book. I spend a small Quiet Time with each kid reading from their bibles in the morning, plus reading from “God’s Wisdom for Little Boys/Girls” before afternoon rest time. I’m kinda winging beginning reading using SCM’s tips on teaching Charlotte Mason style. It is actually more enjoyable than trying to make him read those 100% phonics approach to reading. I’m going to try and use the k4 letter of the week curriculum for my pre-k daughter just to have something extra fun for her. Oh yeah, Apologia Astronomy for science! Lots of reading and narrating!

  18. Courtney,
I really feel as though the Lord is encouraging me to homeschool my children. My husband and his family are very much against the idea of homeschooling. His mother is a public school teacher and the entire family seems to have made up their minds that homeschooling is a terrible idea.
This fall I will be homeschooling my son for preschool, and the plan after that is to send him to a private school whose teaching methods are more in line with how I want my children to learn.
Despite my urging, my husband will not reconsider his stance and doesn’t feel the need to pray about the decision. He is a man of faith, but is so strongly against this I feel it is clouding his judgement. Do you have any advice for me or other women who may be going through a similar situation?
You are a great inspiration and I am grateful for all you do for us.

    1. If it was still summer I would tell you to have your hubby attend a Classical Conversations Practicum where he can learn about the accountability and amount of informations children can learn if given the opportunity! CC is great for this. If there are no more practicums there are many information meetings that happen during this time of year to share what CC is about! During the school year there is also ‘open house’ you can attend to see CC in action and watch the classical method work! I have found that some hubbys are not fond of homeschooling because they fear the worse! Many times our children reflect who WE are and when we are doing something against the flow of society and it turns out different than he or your family expects, there is no one else to blame but who is in the mirror. Be assured that if the Lord is placing this on your heart, begin praying for your hubby! Please, DO NOT nag him or hassle him with the latest and greatest homeschooling catalogs. Sit back and let God do all the work! No matter what your hubby’s opinion is, if the Lord is preparing you, He will begin doing a work on your hubby’s heart! If he has doubts or concerns in your ability, maybe God needs to gently smack him in the head with a 2×4 about his lack of trust in what God is calling you to do. HOWEVER, if you are in the way and openly bringing up the subject with him, guess who is going to get hit with the 2X4. Yes, maam that will be you. This is where submission is a lovely thing when we support and encourage our hubby but then pray and let GOD do the rebuke, chastisement. So much more effective this way AND with lasting results! So many times we can bend their ear and their will for a time and when something goes wrong, it gives them opportunity to doubt US because it was not God leading. When it is God leading and something goes wrong, it is God they have the ability to go to for guidance through the rough patch! I wish you many blessings as the Lord continues to move on the hearts of your family!

    2. I just had to reply to this post. As a graduate of 13 years of homeschooling (K5-12) myself I think I can at least comment from experience 🙂 First, I would say Follow your husband’s lead. I do not want to sound like I am reprimanding, but I would pray about having the Lord give you the strength to follow what your husband thinks whether you believe he is right or wrong. It is not a sin to send your children to public or private school, so your husband is not asking you to sin. The Husband is the Spiritual head of the family and why not follow him? So many husbands do not lead their families because the wife will not let them. This may take a ton of Faith on your part to follow your husband’s lead and allow the Lord to take control. The Lord will bless you for this step of faith.

  19. Courtney can you tell me where you community got the map that your dad is standing in front of? SO much nicer than the 20X30 poster I had printed!
I know what you mean about having family to help! This year I am a new director in our area CC and it is kind of a one man show! We are small so this is OK but my dad is my Essentials sub! DOn’t know what I would do without him! He is recovering his education as well so it is fun! I think I may delegate to have him in charge of our foundations science experiments too as this is something he LOVES to do with my kids! Blessings on your school year!

    1. Wow! Great job taking on Director! What a blessing you must be to your CC group! I got my map at Target – it’s in their children’s wall stickers and decals section!
      Have a great new year!!
      Courtney

      1. Thank you for sharing! I will have to check that out! Is this in your home or at the church where you meet?

  20. This is our second year homeschooling. For my K-4 daughter we are using MFW, Saxon K and 1st grade, A Reason for Handwriting, memorizing scriptures, and using a Family Reading Bible for bible and breakfast time.
For my PreK-3 daughter we are using Horizons Preschool program. She is also memorizing scriptures. We have been underway since mid-June as we are doing a more year round approach and we are all having a great time. They also take swim lessons and my oldest does soccer through Upwards

  21. I have a 2nd grader and K’er. We will be doing the following subjects together: The “Put-on” Chart bible study ( based on Colossians 3), TruthQuest History, WinterPromise science-The World Around Me, Music- Tchaikovsky (MFW), and Drawing with Children. My 2nd grader will be doing Primary Arts of Language-Writing, All About Spelling, Singapore Math, and Hooked on Phonics Master Reader. He is also going to “Wednesday School” at a local Christian school for more writing, hands on science and literature along with Spanish, P.E., Music and Art. My Kindergartner’s schedule is a little less decided! She will be doing Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, Handwriting without Tears, and a K level math. And of course we read together everyday!

As far as extracurricular, I have a less is more philosophy. My 2nd grader will most likely do Boy Scouts and/or our church Awana program. My K’er will do ballet and Awana.

  22. This is such an encouraging blog that I believe the Lord led me to several months ago. This will be our fourth year of homeschooling. We currently have a 8 yo and a 5 yo. Our homeschooling journey will consist of using a hodgepodge of curriculum to give it a Classical/Charlotte Mason flare. The list is too long to write but our core is using Sonlight 4/5 and Core C for history/read-alouds/readers/science/bible.
For language arts we will use a blend of Queen Homeschool Language Lessons/First Language Lessons/Explode the Code/All About Spelling/Handwriting Without Tears. For math it will be a blend of Shiller Math/Thinking Kids Math.
On top of using these resources we will be adding a whole bunch of file folders to make mini-unit themes throughout the year. We will be working on our nature studies, geography, mental math, and life skills as a family using the world and events around us (this is the Charlotte Mason part). This year our physical education, art, music will be learned together in a laid back family environment. I am hoping the best for your families and may the Lord bless our homeschooling year.

  23. Thanks for this post, Courtney! I LOVE reading about other peoples’ homeschooling journey, curriculum choices, etc.

I have one son who is 4, and will be doing the Sonlight P4/5 program, and another son who is 6, who will be doing the complete(newcomer package) Sonlight B program. We are using some other curriculum as well, so I’ve eliminated a few things from Sonlight that we don’t care for, but for the most part, we will complete everything. This will be our 4th year using Sonlight! For math, we use Horizons. We will also be using Horizons Phonics and Reading this year, along with Horizons Spelling.

  24. ***Where did you get the wall decales for the world? I so want these.***
This will be our first year with CC and I am so very excited about how it will address some areas of our homeschooling; accountability (for students and teacher), encouraging support, memory work, classical education (which we’ve had elements of in our homeschooling, but it will now be our primary method).
Math: Math-U-See (heading into our 8th year with MUS)
Language Arts: Essentials/IEW for two, Challenge A materials for one, and Frontline and Abeka phonics for my K.
    Spelling: Spelling Power
Handwriting: copywork, cursive printouts for practice from Handwrting Worksheets.com (I can input the sentences, they trace them and copy them on the next line). My K child will practice handwriting as part of his phonics programs.
Typing: Dance Mat Typing (free online)
Supplements: Kingfisher History Encyclopedia and Science Encyclopedia, Mystery of History, Story of the World, history resources we own from our years of using My Father’s World
Book Basket time is a big part of our homeschooling. We will check out books to coincide with each week’s history sentence and science topic, place them in our book basket, and then spend 30 minutes/day “feasting” on these books as each student’s curiosity dictates (meaning, the reading time is assigned and the books are pre-selected. It’s up to each student which book/page/photo/caption draws them in.)
Bible: The 7 C’s of History (AIG), bible reading time, family bible and scripture memorization time.

Loved Practicum and have had a good summer getting to know quite a few of the moms that will be in our CC group this year. Our director (who also heads up our state) is SUCH a blessing to all of us. I know we have some seriously hard work cut out for us (especially my Challenge A who has not had Foundations or Essentials) but I trust that God will be alongside us as we press on.
    Blessings,
    Toni

    1. Hooray! Welcome to CC! I’m so glad your experience has already been so good – awesome! I got my map at Target in the children’s wall stickers and decals section. I love Target – they have everything there lol!!
Have a GREAT school year Toni!
      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

      1. Totally heading to Target tomorrow in search of those decales. Thanks for the information and for your encouragement, Courtney. I saw your response about the lapbooks and it was helpful. Talked to my dh about it and he’s all for my purchasing them. He just would like me to wait for a few weeks as our year gets underway, to see how much time I’ll have to work them in with adjusting to four children in CC all at once. Those lapbooks look like terrific resources for the memory work. Brings in visual and kinesthetic input. Love that.
        Blessings,
        Toni

  25. We homeschool and use Heart of Dakota. I couldn’t love it any more than I already do! My son will be using Teaching Textbooks for math on the computer, my daughter will be using Singapore.

  26. I am just amazed by all you home-schooling mums. I think it’s amazing. Here in the UK, we hardly hear about such. I have to admit, before I started visiting your link ups (and others) a couple of months ago, I never knew such happened on such a grande scale – even outside the UK. I had heard on a couple of occasions about mums in the UK home-schooling but honestly never paid much attention… and certainly never knew any home-schooling mums personally.

Now, my heart goes out to children here in the UK. Children who don’t have this same wonderful opportunity… children who don’t have Christian mums and it makes me sad. I think of my own 2 beautiful little nieces who are learning all sorts of questionable things at school and how they are changing and becoming disrespectful, etc. I wish good things for my nieces… things like what you Christian mums are giving your children (my sister is not a Christian). My sister lives on the other side of the country and I don’t see them very often but I am sad that they are changing.

Please pray for the children in the UK for whom home-schooling is not an option and in the current spiritual climate is not likely unless the Lord steps in. Please pray He does. Your children are so blessed. What a privilege each of you have thanks to other things you have sacrificed in love.

  27. This is our first year with Classical Conversations:) I have 5 year old twins and boy is it going to be an adventure. We decided to split them up, which is hard for me, but my Gracie is way more…bossy, than her brother John! We want him to have a chance to develop friendships without his sister:)

    1. Lol! I love that you are trying it out with them split. My kids were in a CC class together last year and I’m very excited to have them split this year for the reason you said – I look forward to them developing their own friendships!
      Have a great year!
      Courtney

  28. I’ve been doing abc’s 123’s shapes colors animals w my son since abt 18mths he will b 3 in nov and was co
Considering getting the Abeka curriculum for him they have stuff for kids as young as 2 . Any advise would b nice thanks just wantin to training now on sittin listening doin table actives plus learning academicially

  29. Hi Courtney!
So wonderful to see what you are doing this year! I will be using Son Light as well!!

    I was wondering 2 things:
    1. Where did you get that wall map in the first picture?? AWESOME!!!
    2. I am new to homeschooling (feel it’s my 2nd official yr) and I was wondering what tips/advice do you have for busy moms – home keeping, homeschooling, ministry, life… – to be consistent with all responsibilities? So basically how do you become consistent? I find consistency is hard… I do not know why! I want to get up early every morning do my devotionals, I want to carry routine…. but why is it so hard???

So that is my question. I wanted to know because I wanted to make changes in my life this year! I want things to run a little more smoothly this year!!

    Thanks… lots of love,

Been following your blog for a LONG TIME!!

    Monica

  30. Our curriculum list for my 11 year old:

    Classical Conversations

Math, we are using Bob Jones.

    Literature, we are using Sonlight.

    Bible, we are using Apologia.

Spelling, A Reason For Spelling, but I’ve been looking at the EEL list.

He also takes piano lessons, & will start Upward Basketball in December. Both of my boys attend a year round program at our church called Royal Rangers.

  31. Hey there would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m going to start my own blog soon but I’m having a tough time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m
looking for something completely unique. P.S Sorry for getting off-topic
    but I had to ask!
