How To Make Homemade Crayons & Link-Up Party!

I am not a very crafty mama but this is one craft we do yearly…after I explain the steps you’ll see why. 🙂

How to Make Homemade Crayons:

1.  Have your children peel the paper off of worn out crayons. (This is great because it should keep your children busy for a long time while you get work done or read a good book – like your Bible!)

2.  Get out metal cookie cutters (if you don’t have these on hand you will need to purchase them – but they are usually quite cheap at dollar stores this time of year!)

3.  Break the crayons into pieces (this is a little messy but it’s so worth it…the children should enjoy this part!) and sort them in piles according to color (again another time consumer 🙂 !)

4.  Then put foil around the cookie cutters (if you don’t use the foil the crayons won’t stay in the cookie cutters.)

5.  Place the cookie sheet in a 300 degree oven for 8-10 minutes, or until melted.

6.  Then place them in a freezer to cool (or in our case, out on the back porch!). The crayons should separate from the cookie cutter just enough that you can pop them out easily!

Now give the children time to color with their brand new homemade crayons and enjoy their new works of art!

  1. That is just too awesome!! I am so going to make these! Thanks for the great ideas. I also appreciated your thoughts on the election and our lives being under scruntiny. I’m Australian, not American, but I still care who takes over the Oval Office and it is helpful to hear no matter where you live! God bless.

  2. Thanks for sharing! I do the same thing 🙂 i have this kit of small cookie cutters that are just perfect for this project. My boys love it,and I agree it’s very time-consuming. When my older son was younger, he LOVED to peel off the paper. I would let him sit there and do that for nearly an hour sometimes because he loved it so much. He was a VERY high-maintenance child and the hour of “free” time was well worth the mess!

  3. Creative! My daughter glued a rainbow of crayons in the wrappers on a canvass, then used a blow dryer to melt them and let the wax run down. Your project reminded me of this.

  4. I have done this before as well, but I found the higher quality crayons such as Crayola will perform much better. We had some cheap ones we threw in and where they were, the color was barely noticeable.

  5. This post was so darling, Courtney! Just yesterday I cleaned out 1 kitchen cabinet (which is my hubby’s love language!!!) and I found 2 of those 64 big box of crayons & promptly accidently help one upside down and yep, the rolled all over the kitchen! I about cried, the scent of Crayola it made me miss my kids who are in college now!!! My youngest is blind as you know Courtney, and she doesn’t use crayons. I couldn’t remove the crayons (and 4 cans of play dough) I am emotionally attached to them! I need to give them to a young family so they can do this very activity! Love to you, hug your little one, the days fly by!!Love, Juana

  6. Great craft idea! If you WANT to skip the peeling time, you can simply soak them in a bowl of water. Voilà! Paper comes away easily without peeling. ?
