Are you short on time and looking for the perfect dessert to take to a picnic?   Here you go!

Janelle from Comfy in the Kitchen is showing us how to make a quick and easy Red, White and Blue Berry Trifle!  She writes:

This elegant dessert is so light, so simple, and so delicious…perfect for a warm Summer day. The juice from the berries naturally soak into the angle food cake. The homemade whipping cream adds a special touch to this “semi-homemade” Berry Trifle. Your guests will be delighted!

Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, whipping cream, {sugar}, 1 store purchased Angel Food Cake, a trifle bowl.

Cut strawberries and rinse all berries in a colander.

Mix berries {beautiful, aren’t they?}

Pour whipping cream into a large mixing bowl and beat on high until soft peaks form. Please know that you can over mix whipping cream, and it will lose its creamy smooth texture.

Add 1/2 cup of sugar to whipping cream and beat for 30 seconds until combined. {Yes, you may substitute Cool Whip if you need to…but the extra 5 mins to make your own whipped cream is SO worth it in this particular dessert}.

You are ready to layer! Start by simply tearing large pieces of angel food cake apart and layering them at the bottom of your trifle bowl. Add berries, then whipping cream. Repeat 3 times.

  2. I LOVE making this dessert! & you’re right….perfect for the summer & festive for the 4th!
    I like to mix cream cheese with the whip cream….extra yummy!

  3. May I also add a suggestion from a recipe I found on pinterest somewhere: basically the same idea but instead of the whipped cream it was lemon curd (I get the jar from Trader Joe’s) and one 8oz. softened cream cheese mixed together until smooth. That has become my favorite filling in general, heck, I’d eat it with a spoon! The recipe I saw cut the angel food cake in thirds and then you layered everything. While a beautiful dessert, it was problematic to cut. Making it as a trifle would so much better…and adding whipped cream in there too, heavenly!

    I’m thinking this is the reason I finally get a trifle bowl! Thanks Janelle! 🙂

  4. That is gorgeous! I love angel food cake; it is so versatile! And this looks very easy, even though I would have to make the cake myself (gluten free). Gluten free angel food is one of the easiest cakes to make–the hardest part is separating all those eggs! And a lemon curd/cream cheese sauce sounds delicious too!

    One thing I have found when making whipped cream is that using granulated sugar makes the final product gritty, especially if the sugar is added after the cream is mostly whipped! I guess it doesn’t have enough time to melt. If you use powdered sugar, it tastes just as good, and no grit! 🙂

  5. Ooh this is beautiful and sounds delicious! Just what I was looking for to bless my family with tomorrow for the 4th!! Can’t wait to taste the homemade Cool Whip… ????

    Thanks for the great recipe and have a blessed Independence Day! ????????
