How To Use the SOAK Bible Study Method and Bible Coloring Chart

This tutorial on the SOAK Bible Study method and Bible coloring chart will take your daily Bible study to a new level as you take time to soak in God's Word. #GoodMorningGirls #Biblestudy #Women'sBibleStudy #Biblecoloring

Some of you asked that I further explain the SOAK and Bible Coloring Chart Method.  Please remember, these methods are optional.  They are tools that help us soak God’s word into our hearts more deeply.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”   (Colossians 3:16)

This short video explains it all!

{If you are reading this in an email – come on over to the blog to see this video. I hope it blesses you!}

Here is the SOAK method I refer to in the video:

S – The S stands for Scripture

O – The O stands for Observation

A – The A stands for Application

K – The K stands for Kneeling in Prayer

And the Bible Coloring Chart Bookmark:

There is no right or wrong way to do this.

  1. Thanks for sharing, Courtney! That was a very useful video. My group and I are all pumped up to get into God’s word on Monday. This reading plan has made it so easy to immerse ourselves in The Word each and everyday. I’m only a year or so into the christian life and I so appreciate your ministry. I have a wonderful mom but I’m learning on my own how to be a woman of God. You’re a huge help for the woman who didn’t quite know where to start!!
    Keep on it, girl!!

    1. I just located this web site and am very thankful to join in on the new bible study – Judge. I have looked for instructions as how to properly study the bible and pray.
Thank you and God bless you

  2. Thanks for sharing how to use the color code chart in the video. It was rather helpful. Looking forward to the study of Exodus starting Monday 1/5.

  3. Thanks so much for the clarification AND for linking to the tools you use. Our group is looking so forward to starting on Monday! Thank you for leading us all. Praying for you and all the Good Morning Girls on this great journey!!!

  4. I think I have finally figured out how to communicate with this site and I am looking forward to the study of Exodus. Also, I have used your Soap method and it is a great learning tool. Thanks for all you do!

  5. Hallo Courtney,
i’m from Germany. I like your site very much and would like to start on Monday with the study of the Bible in the book of Exodus with you.
My english is not so good. To write I just use a translation program. 🙂
So I ask myself: If the documents are translated into German? Especially the Bible Coloring Chart. For this I would be very grateful!
    Many kind regards
    Jana

    1. Hi Jana,

I’m so glad you are joining us – I apologize that at this time we do not have a German translator – but there is a German Good Morning Girls group reading the Bible here: http://gmg-deutschland.blogspot.de I believe they are planning to translate the color chart for the start of their session as well. Also, you can visit the GMG International page here: https://womenlivingwell.org/gmg-international/ to find other German Materials.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

      1. Thank you for reporting the German Good Morning Girls!
I’m happy to take part in the Exodus Bible reading and I look forward to it very much.
The materials available are only in English, is a good opportunity this year to improve my English. 🙂
        God bless you
        Jana

  6. I thank you so much for making the color coding clearer. I am hoping to be able to follow through with this( color coding), I am so wanting to get deeper into God’s Word and to let it permeate into my mind and heart . I have been studying with you now for about 2 years or more and have enjoyed it greatly, I have grown so much during each and every study, but for some reason I am really excited and apprehensive about this study at the same time. I have a few things going on in my life right now that I so need the Word of God to just wash over me and just fill me . Your joy and enthusiasm is so uplifting and contagious. May our Lord and Savior bless you and your family during this New Year.

  7. Thank you for this video explaining it more clearly!! I sooo look forward to learning this way to study even deeper!!! I’m sure I’ll have to read several times to make sure I don’t miss any of the chapter to highlight! This will be fun!

Do you think that maybe you’d post a picture of your highlighted chapters every once in a while? Not so that we can copy yours, but to make sure we are all “getting it”? I’m positive I’m not the only one that wants to grow deeper this way. 🙂

    His
    Shari

  16. Hi! I’m a missionary in Japan. You mentioned in your video that the pens you use still bleed a little. These pens are from Japan and I love them for writing in my Bible. It doesn’t bleed and it shows through the thin pages very little. They are a little pricey stateside, but I think they are worth the money. Make sure you get the .3mm. That makes a difference when writing on a bible page. You can also just buy them in black if you want something cheaper. Just thought I would mention it for what it is worth. I’m a much older lady than some of you here, but this blog has been such an encouragement to me. I know it is to others as well! Thank you!

  17. We have started this study in an online group of friends. I’m excited to be digging deeper in the word.

  18. I am just starting this bible study, you have inspired me so much can’t wait to did deeper into God’s word with you. Thanks soon much for all that you do!

    God bless you all;
as we SOAK in God’s word

  19. Hi Courtney form Australia. I have been following you for a year and hve been greatly encouraged to dig into Gods word. Could you repost the link to the Bible by Chapter chart that we can cross off as we go, as I am a visual person.
    Thanking you

  20. I wanted to chime in about tools for color coding. I have found that Crayola Twistables work well also. They come in a variety of colors, like the colored pencils, and also don’t bleed through. They have a wider point than colored pencils, so it works similar to a highlighter, instead of a colored pencil.

I also was wondering if you have the color coding sheet in a book mark size? I think it would be easier to tuck into my Bible. Thanks!

  21. Hi Courtney…
First of all I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the blessing God has brought to my life through you. I pray God continues to abundantly bless your life.

I have found so much joy studying Gods word using your SOAK method and Coloring chart. My reason for writing you today is because I’m trying to find these two things translated into spanish. I would love to share them with a group of women I attend bible study class with. This has helped me so much in meditating, understanding and simply enjoying being in the word & studying the word of God. I even showed my teacher the other day and she’s all for using these methods. Unfortunately most of the ladies that attend this class don’t speak english. Any info you can provide me with would be appreciated.

Thank you again & God Bless..
    Ada Fitch

  22. Could you send me a clear picture of exodus chapter 1 so I can see if my color is near yours I really want to get the hang or this having trouble. Thank you

  23. I just recently discovered this method as I was looking through Pinterest. Thank you so much for sharing this. I really do enjoy this method and believe it is the right fit for me. My ten year old daughter has even been using it and loves it as well. I even shared one of my highlighted chapters on my blog. This would have never happened before as I always worried about doing something wrong. I am so glad you mentioned that there really is no wrong way to do this. Thank you again for sharing. I am so excited about my study time now.

  24. Loved the video and the color coding idea using the SOAK method. I also wanted to share the color pens I use, and I have used them all. These are the most fabulous pens ever. They do not bleed through the thin pages of my Bible, plus they are erasable without a trace of a pen mark if you have to erase. I use them to write in my journal, to write notes in the margin of my Bible and in my Precept Inductive Bible Study Bible, marking key words. Here’s the link if you want to check this out. http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-FriXion-Erasable-Assorted-LFP312FN-24C/dp/B003R7ZVF2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1429723324&sr=8-5&keywords=frixion

  25. Hi.
    Grace and peace to you.
Do you know how many brown people there are in the world? Perhaps you didn’t realize that choosing brown as the color of evil, sin, etc. –essentially, all the bad things described in the bible — might create another subliminal and systemic means of marginalizing many, many, many people, no matter how insignificant a “color” in the broader context of this article may appear.

I imagine this wasn’t your intention. Truthfully, the concept is useful, especially if you’re a visual learner. However, consider another color please. Oh, I see you have brown/gray in another area of this post. Perhaps “brown stood up and left the building” (to be free, appreciated, loved, uplifted, valued, etc.)

Please don’t respond with statements I hear from so many Christians (that aren’t brown); “You shouldn’t interpret this that way. I don’t see color” [marginalization + insult]. That’s obviously not true. I hope you do see color as it applies to every living person –who all have rich, beautiful lineages, starting from the time God formed us in our mother’s womb.

    Lovingly and with respect.

    C.J. Bedell

  26. Thanks for sharing using highlighters to study the scripture. Please I want to know how to combine the colours for meditation.

  27. I know this is an older video but I find it helpful to review things as we dive into a new study here at GMG! Plus I love to hear your voice. 😉 Thanks for sharing your wisdom here with all of us on the WWW! Your mom & dad did a wonderful job raising 3 Godly daughters and I see that you all are doing the same with your children! BRAVO! We need more people like you in this world!

Keep on keeping on Courtney. I pray for you and your ministry daily 😀

  28. Hi!
I´m from Sweden and I just discovered your blog the other day and it´s very inspiring. I´ve never heard about the SOAK method to study the bible before, but now I´m gonna try it. I bought pencils in all the colors to day. I´m exited in getting started. I´ve linked you from my blog. I also inspired my readers to try this method and translated it for them. I´m going to keep following your ministry for more inspiration.Thank you!
    Sincerely, Carolina

  29. Hi Courtney!
Thank you for posting so many helpful resources! I’ve just recently started to use the color coding system when I study and I love it! I’m having trouble deciding what some passages should be though. For example, the first chapter in Jonah (and many other passages that are in “story” form)…the theme behind the chapter is Jonah’s fear and disobedience. Is that something you would personally color in all brown/gray? I know there’s no wrong way…I’m just curious. Thanks!

  30. Thank you for being an inspiration! Maintaining the community day in and day out is a LOT of work and I truly appreciate what you are doing, Courtney.

I have a question about the Hi-Gliders. I love the vibrancy (except the orange – it doesn’t seem to “match” the other colors) but they make my pages stick together. How do you keep your Bible pages from sticking when using them? The pages in my Bible are very thin, and I’ve resorted to using just 1 or 2 of the Hi-Gliders to minimize the sticking. I’m hoping you have a solution.

Keep up the excellent work. You are in my prayers.

    1. Hi Robin,

Yes, my pages stick together too at times! Sometimes I put a white sheet of paper between the pages as I color on the other side so it will stick onto the white sheet instead of onto each other. Hope that helps!

Thank you for the encouragement and so glad you are here!
      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  31. We have a small group Bible study working through the Gospel of John right now using the SOAK method! It’s going well with several that are brand new to Bible study and several who have done Bible study for years upon years! Some of the ladies are also incorporating the color chart into their study for the first time. There are some teen and tween-age daughters who are watching their moms and now are also interested in the color charting process. Our question is…what tips do you have for our children beginning to use the color chart? Do you simplify the chart some way for them? Thank you for your work in encouraging women to get into God’s Word and giving us tools to help us learn!!! God bless you all!

    1. Hi Stacy – this is wonderful that your daughters are doing it too!!!

My daughter, who is ten, has used the chart and rather than simplifying it – I just remind her that there is no right or wrong way to do it. So she can take liberty with it and do it to the best of her ability.

So no – I would not simplify it just remind them that there is no right or wrong way to do it.

      Hope that helps!
      Courtney 🙂

  32. Thank you for posting so many helpful resources! I’ve just recently started to use the color coding system when I study. Very informative. I also want to share something useful that helps a lot on merging PDF files easily, try this Altomerge.

  33. I really like the S.O.A.K. method you share. I have a question though….which bible are you using? It looks like a hardcover, nice large pages and just wanted to try to get the same version and one that you are using. Thank you so much! Shelly

  34. I want to share that it will be my first time joining this group. i am grateful in Gods timing that I have connected. I am doing the James study with two great friends that are more like family. keep us in prayer as we want to grow in order to be what God continues to want out of us.

  35. I could not help but notice your Bible has wide margins, without commentary, I have been looking for a Bible just like this and have had no luck at all. Could you tell me the name of this Bible I would be so grateful.

    Thank you for your time,

    Margie Williams
