March Bible Reading Plan & Intro to Matthew

Join Good Morning Girls as we read through the Bible cover to cover one chapter a day. Here are the resources you need to study the Book of Matthew. #Biblestudy #Matthew #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

Today we begin our study in the book of Matthew {cue the confetti!}.

The author Matthew, also called Levi, left his job as a tax collector to become a disciple in Matthew 9:9:

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

The Gospel of Matthew was written to the Jews.

Matthew focused on the fulfillment of the Old Testament, quoting it 62 times, more than any other gospel writer. For those of you color coding (see chart below), get your orange pencils and highlighters ready because there is a lot of prophecy to highlight this week!

The main theme of Matthew is to show Jesus as the Messiah.

If you were with us for our study of the Book of Genesis and Exodus you might find this particular interesting.

Look at these correlations between the Old Testament and the book of Matthew:

In Genesis 3:15, the seed was promised.

In Matthew 1, the promised seed – Jesus – arrived!

In Exodus 12, on the night of the Passover in Egypt, the seed was protected from Pharoah.

In Matthew 2, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt and the seed was protected from King Herod.

In 1 Corinthians 10:1-4, Paul related the Israelites crossing of the Red Sea in Exodus, to baptism.

In Matthew 3, Jesus was baptized.

In Genesis 1, the first Adam was tempted with the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and the pride of life…and he fell.

In Matthew 4, Jesus, the second Adam, was tempted in the wilderness with the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life…yet without sin.

And that brings us to Matthew 5. Jesus, the true law giver, goes up on the mountain to deliver a sermon.  He interprets the law given by Moses.  He is the greater Moses.

Isn’t this exciting to see how interwoven the scriptures are?

This week’s reading is going to be amazing! I cannot wait to get to it.

  1. I love what you shared about the weaving together of the Old Testament and the New Testament, Courtney’!! It’s exciting and beautiful!!

Praise God for the treasures we find in His Word!! I look forward to learning more in our time together in the book of Matthew!

    Sweet blessings,
    Laurie

    1. Laurie,

Thank you for your continual enthusiasm and encouragement. You have been a huge blessing to me.

Can’t wait to take another journey through a book of the Bible with you!
      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  2. Hello! I have enjoyied your studies for some time now. It is such a great way to connect with the Word. My question is this…when do you schedule your time for the study? Early morning? Night? I’m always curious about when other moms get their time with The Lord.

    1. Hi Emily,

Each season of my life has looked different. I prefer mornings but if I’m not up early enough (before the kids) it gets interrupted and I have to finish in the afternoon or evening. This afternoon – I studied Matthew for about 2 hours. 😉 I keep my Bible open through out the day and graze on it. 😉 But the sweet spot for me is mornings at 7am.

      Courtney

    2. Hi sweetie, I also try my very best to get up early and spend time with the Lord before the busyness of the day starts. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen and I have learned that’s okay. God knows our heart and our desire and He walks with us through this life. I have learned while reading through the Bible with Courtney that this is MY journey with the Lord and it may be imperfect some days, but I am trying.

I think the best time of day is what works for YOU. 🙂 I have had others read along with me that say their best time is at night, others in the afternoon… 🙂 As moms, no one time is best for everyone.

Enjoy you time fellowshipping with the Lord through His precious word to you. 🙂

      God bless,
      Misty

  3. I am new to your site and this is my first bible study series. I am excited about it! I have watched your videos on the color coding and I have been doing that as I read my Bible. Thank you for your encouragement! I feel I found your site at the right time at the right moment in my life! God is so good!

  4. Thank you so much for taking the time to research and organize these resources. I’ve gotten so much from your ministry! I’m really looking forward to reading through Matthew with everyone!

  5. Hi:) I am new to your site as well. I was browsing through pinterest the other day and found your website. I like the idea of joining a group of girls and reading the word of God. I am new to the church and I don’t know much, I would like to learn more of God’s word. Thank you for the time you take to make this happen, and for all the helpful resources you have on your website, I really appreciate it.

    1. Jessica, I KNOW RIGHT? I started out joining WLW just for companionship. Now I find myself up to my eyeballs in the colored pencils, colored pens for my journal and Bible apps open on my phone. Courtney has some great videos on YouTube too.
I hope that most of the studies found here stay free or at least the books don’t cost a fortune. I have a 2 month old and I can’t bring myself to spend 13 or 14 dollars on a Kindle book for a study on some other site.
      Glad you’re here!

  6. I’m so excited to start the book of Matthew with you! I began following along with your blog in the middle of the Exodus study 🙂 It’s been such a huge blessing to be able to join in and have structure to follow along with. Thank you so much for being so faithful to your ministry Courtney. I’ve already learned so much by following along in Gods Word!

I learned about your blog through your book Women Living Well and I just wanted to let you know that book is so amazing and has inspired me in many ways!

  7. I need structure and I believe your website is where I can get it. I have never read the Bible from cover to cover. It doesn’t seem to work for me. I get started and then fizzle out after the first few books of the Bible. I’ve often just picked a book to read at random. I am going to commit to start again using your method. Please pray for me.

  8. Courtney, I thanked the Lord for you this morning as I looked through my binder to see all the scriptures I have poured over alongside you. What a blessing to be eager to seek the Lord and His truths found in His word!!! I am SO excited to be starting Matthew today and will be praying for each women that strives to spend time with the Lord.

Blessings to you sweet Courtney and all those who work behind the scenes. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. 🙂

  9. I am so excited to start this study of Matthew as I already know it is a wonderful book! Thank you Courtney for your continued dedication and heart for the Lord. You are an encouragement to me and I love your willingness to be a servant to the King! What an honored position! I can’t wait to dig in! Have a good week!

  10. Blessings Courtney, I looked through your website and blog for quite some time and I am just amazed, bless, and excited to see, read, and learn more about The LORD’S HOLY WORD and How THE LORD is using you to be a vessel for HIM AND HIM ALONE. This year, I told the LORD I want to know you more and hunger for your WORD. I told Our HEAVENLY FATHER show me where to start, some way I can’t remember ; I ended up going through your website. I am excited to start reading with all of you Servants of the LORD HIS WORD in the book of Matthew, its my first time doing the reading plan but I am excited. I know The LORD’S HOLY WORD will come alive to my life and be the method to study THE LORD’S PRECIOUS WORD. THANK YOU. GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS.

    BLESSINGS,
    Adelene

P.S: I was so thrilled about the reading plan, I told my sister’s about it

  11. Do you happen to have a long workbook for Matthew available? I just don’t have enough room to write on the short workbook. Thank you so much for putting this together.

    1. I’m sorry, I discontinued the long workbook because so few women were using it.

I apologize it will no longer be available. 🙁
      Courtney

      1. I understand about not having enough room, what I have started doing awhile back was I purchased a 5 subject notebook and do my study in that. It then affords me to use all the space I need to do the study the way I feel I need to do still using the SOAK method, not that the e-books are not fantastic, there just wasn’t enough room for me. I have at times been able to put 2-3 books of study in one notebook. Hope this helps, not hinders.

        1. Oh bummer Courtney! Thanks for letting me know though!

That’s a great idea Wendy! Thank you…I will try that. 🙂

  12. I love having this group of women (and especially you Courtney. You are SO knowledgeable!) to read through the Bible with! I get way side tracked but I am starting fresh in Matthew and can’t wait to see where it takes me spiritually. Are there any good websites to use for just more info and commentary on Matthew?

  13. It’s so late but, I am just getting to read the blog today. Oh my, we were on the SAME page today even with our OT references!! My SOAK for today…I was just SO drawn to how Scripture lines up with Scripture. I love how it points and confirms and REconfirms!! His Word is TRUE!!
    Matthew 1
S: v 23“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
O: This was fulfillment of prophecy from Isaiah 7:14 and Genesis 3:15. I love how scripture lines up with Scripture! Isaiah said that Jesus would be born of a virgin. Genesis 3:15 spoke of “her offspring and how “he” will crush your head – meaning there would be enmity between the spiritual descendants of Satan and those who are in the family of God. specifically “he” is Jesus Christ who would strike a death blow to Satan’s head at the cross.
A: I need never to doubt that Scripture will line up with Scripture, will line up with Scripture forever and ever. Scripture confirms God’s Word is true. God revealed Jesus Christ in His Word, then Jesus Christ was revealed to the world through his birth.
K: Thank you Lord God for helping us to continue to study in your word. I’m so excited to be learning again of your birth, your genealogy, the fulfillment of prophecy. I love how you’ve shown us the genealogy of Christ both through Joseph and Mary, how could there be any doubt. Amen

  14. I started this Bible reading plan yesterday (but I practiced this weekend using the color coding in Psalms and Proverbs :)) and I can’t tell you how much I love it! I wake up extra early (5:15 am) and start my coffee. Then I grab my Bible and Crayola Twistable colored pencils and start my reading for the day. The process of highlighting different items with different colors makes reading the Bible colorful and meaningful. I’ve never stuck with a plan this long (4 days lol), but I feel a sweet connection to this way of studying my Bible. Courtney, thank you so much for sharing your amazing gift with us. I am so blessed by your blog! I hope to get your book this week as well! Keep on fighting the good fight! Many blessings to you and your precious family!

  15. I just ordered The New Inductive Study Bible a few days ago and it finally came today. I am so psyched to start using it! Thank you so much for all of your tips on studying the bible in your video and the suggested resources. I got some colored pencils today. I’ve really been looking and searching for many months on a more effective way to really study God’s Word for myself and get more out of my time in His Word and this really helped a lot! I’m so excited to work through the book of Matthew with you all. I’ve started this particular book many times and haven’t finished it that I remember, so I’m really excited to see it through. Thank you, Courtney for all you do on this site and with Good Morning Girls/Love God Greatly. I have been so blessed by your words of encouragement and the studies that you offer.

  16. I just started your reading plan this week! I really enjoyed it and I look forward to next week’s plan. I do not have Facebook or Instagram so I only have this site to follow you on. I look forward to the discussion. 🙂

  17. Hi Courtney1

When exactly do we go over the discussion questions? What day, and is it through a blog? I just want to make sure I’m understanding the schedule…
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Emily – the discussion questions are meant for the women who are in Good Morning Girls accountability groups. If you are not in a group – I encourage you to invite some friends to join you. They email each other on weekdays (or they are in Facebook groups) and some use these questions to guide their discussions. Others share just what they learned from the SOAKing method.

If you are on your own – you can use them for personal reflection. We discuss the days reading publicly on Facebook every morning at 7:45am at http://www.facebook.com/goodmorninggirlswlw – we’d love to have you join us.

I post here on the blog for GMGs every Monday and Friday.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  18. WOW! Finally…I get to jump back in. I have been in the word, but had too many studies going on at once. I always intended to follow along and was excited about the notion of linking up. I just released my website/blog just a few weeks back. Because I have a predetermined path with it and can only write so much, so I needed to figure out how I could incorporate blogging through the Bible. It is a challenge that I am willing to take on. So I hope to be linking up this Friday. 🙂 Thank you Courtney for staying the course. And I look forward to many meaningful connections here! Blessings!

    1. I’m so glad you are joining us Yolanda and would love to have you link up!

Can’t wait to see you there on Friday!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney
