Welcome back to Week 3 in the Book of Leviticus.  This week we cross the half way point!  Hooray!

This week’s reading is difficult.

I know I keep saying this – but it’s the truth.

This is by far the driest week of all our reading in Leviticus. So if you have been struggling – I am praying for you because this week is really going to test your perseverance.

This week we will look at:

Chapter 11: Clean and Unclean Food

Chapter 12: Purification After Childbirth

Chapter 13: Regulations About Infectious Skin Diseases & Mildew

Chapter 14: Cleansing from Infectious Skin Diseases and Mildew

Chapter 15: Discharges Causing Uncleanness

Do you see what I mean? Hard stuff right?

So what does it all mean? How do we apply it all?

First, remember the goal is not our happiness but holiness. This reading might make you uncomfortable but it is a worthy pursuit.

Secondly, consider that these laws came in a time before proper sanitation.  These laws on what was clean and unclean, would have protected God’s people from diseases they were unaware of.  For example, they would not have understood that bodily fluids or certain animals carry disease.  They would not have understood the dangers of mold and mildew.  God was protecting His people.

Third, the more you read Leviticus the more you see how important the first 5 books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy – also called the Torah) are to understanding the entire Bible. This book is foundational to understanding all that is to come in the rest of the Old and New Testament.

Finally, we see that God’s commandments are out of His love and protection for His people.  Praise the Lord for His holy word that guides and protects us.

  1. This is not dry by no means!! This is some of the most intresting parts of the Bible that deal with the daily parts of life!! I do not belive in legalism in no way, but I think we have a lot to learn from this, After I learned of the ways to do after having a baby I started putting that in to practice, I do belive that the post pardom time was much better because of it!! I love Science and I love how God’s word teaches it! One last thing, I could go on, but as far as the monthly cycle, I have come to the conclussion, that I would be a better wife, mother if I could be away from the daily taskes during that time! I think it would lessen the stress that I feel, the part I am talking about is being away from others for the 7 days. I am so touched out, that this would provide a time to rejuenate and get back into the Word, closer to God.

  2. I love todays read. Yesterday during prayer time I poured out my hearth about my frustration with my health and than todays reading really hit home. Plus the question of the day was an eye opener!

  3. Thank you! This reading has reminded me that God wants me to take care of my physical health too! I needed to read this today.

Thank you for explaining this more, I appreciate it. God bless you.

  4. I particularly like the emphasis on if unclean food touches anything ( you, your pot, your clothes etc) they are unclean.

I took it in the sense that what you do will permeate into your life. Just how you can marinate meat and it will absorb the flavor, the things and people you have around you will season you. You should make sure that the people you are with and the things you do are holy so as to remain ‘pure’.

Also I think it can refer to physical health too! As in, the whole – your body is a blessing don’t put junk into it , as it’s disrespectful.

  5. I have a question. How does one know which things are to be followed today as which were only meant for the Old Testament. For example some people do some of the things that are written that we aren’t suppose to do. Just a little confused. Can someone answer please.

    1. Hi Milu,

      Great question. 😉

In Leviticus, we read about the ceremonial laws, civil laws and moral laws of Israel.

The ceremonial and civil laws are not meant for us to practice in our lives so we must be very careful with our applications of this book. The key points we should take away from each chapter is the seriousness of our sin, the need for blood to cover over our sin, and the need for atonement.

The civil laws were for the daily living of Israel. These laws are not for us today but they do point to principles we can learn from.

The moral laws reveal the nature and will of God and are repeated in the New Testament.

All of the sacrificial elements of Leviticus point to the death of Jesus on the cross. When Jesus died he declared, “It is finished.” He was the final sacrifice.

We are no longer under the law but under grace. Some of these laws are repeated in the New Testament such as you shall not murder. Some of these laws are not repeated such as not touching the carcass of a dead animal. This is why it’s important to take the entire counsel of God’s Word together and continue to study it so we know what God has called us to today.

      Hope this helps,
      Courtney 🙂

  6. i am late to the table and the discussion, however i find this very interesting read. i feel God was protecting his dwelling place and it clearly demonstrates that we need to minister to the unclean, but not live there!
what i am wondering during all of this, is the time factor. the cleaning up of the blood on the alter, removing ash, cleaning up the broken clay pots, remaking of the pots, there were over one million ppl in this camp related to the 600K men alone… the way they had to launder the ceremonial dress, if it became soiled, Lev 6:27. yet they were touching blood and all the time. I know as a nurse in the OR, we have blood and we find it on the ceilings at times! Which brings to my mind that we want that place sterile and would be synonymous for the Holy of holy’s. so we just don’t let anyone in there… just a thought to ponder..
but i love how when you study it and you see the grace of the Lord, how God marries the old laws into what Christ did for us. wow, we are so blessed!
