Introduction & Resources to the Book of Song of Solomon {Chapter 1-5}

Join Good Morning Girls as we read through the Bible cover to cover one chapter a day. Here are the resources you need to study the Book of Song of Solomon. #Biblestudy #songofsolomon #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

Welcome to our study in the book of Song of Solomon!  We are Reading through the Bible here at Women Living Well and won’t be skipping any of the books of the Bible, no matter how challenging they are.  Whether you are married or single – there is always something to learn from God’s Word.

As we open the word of God and turn to the book of Song of Solomon, we find a love song.  Actually, it’s a divinely, inspired love poem.

This book is a celebration of sexual love and while it’s not comfortable to talk about this topic in an open forum like this – Christians need to talk about this.  The world is sending all sorts of mixed messages about sex.  God created it to be pure and beautiful and as we’ll see in this book of the Bible – it is for our enjoyment.

This Wednesday and Friday, I will write my blog posts from this angle – but there are many who also see this love song as an allegory and picture of God’s love for Israel and the church.  Jesus is the groom and the church is his bride.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”  This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
(Ephesians 5:31,32)

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
(Revelation 21:1,2)

There is no greater earthly love than that of a husband for his wife and a wife for her husband.  This intimacy represents the profound mystery of Christ and the church.

This is not an easy book to read.  There is a lot of imagery, which is why it is rarely used to preach from the pulpit or to study in group settings.  But it is God’s Word and we are dedicated to reading through the Bible in it’s entirety – so let’s get started!

Here are this week’s Group Discussion Questions

These questions are based on the allegorical reading of this text.  We will leave it to the group to decide if you’d like to discuss this on a personal level.  As I mentioned above, my posts will discuss this book of the Bible as it applies to our marriages and I’ll try to balance it between the allegorical and literal reading of the text. 😉

{A special thank you to my leadership team who created these for us: Mandy, Rosilind, Bridget and Misty.  If you do not have a group, use these for a personal time of reflection.}:

Here are some questions you could ask in your group if you want to discuss the literal interpretation:

What did you learn from today’s reading that you might apply to your marriage?

Look at how the bride and groom communicated with each other. Did you see any hinderances in today’s reading to the bride and groom’s marriage?

What can you learn from today’s reading that helps you better understand yourself, your mate (if you are single your future mate), the importance of intimacy and purity?

Here is this week’s Meditation & Memorization verse!

Print just 1 copy (pictured above) or print 4 copies (pictured below)

of the same verse so you can put it in different places for review.

  3. I am so excited to start this book! I am so grateful to have this ministry supporting me as I dig into His precious Word. As I finished Proverbs this week, I looked back and saw that in this time of studying with you, we have covered quite a bit. I would honestly not have SOAKed through all that on my own, so thank you for your calling, your ministry and commitment to teaching us to hunger for His wisdom through the Word.

Blessings to everyone who is starting.

  4. Hello! I just recently found this site and love what you are doing! Question for you…is there a way for me to go back to the very beginning of reading through the bible and follow your posts or should I just start in the fall? I love the SOAK method:)

    1. Hi Elisha,

I’m so glad you found us here! Just jump right in right where we are and join us now. It’s fun to take this journey together.

You can find all of the past resources and studies on this page here: https://womenlivingwell.org/good-morning-girls-resources/

We take multiple breaks through out the year – so I encourage you to use those breaks to go back and study a book of the Bible you may have missed with us.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  5. I just wanted to say that I am so happy I found this website on Pinterest! I have tried for a while to find a devotion that would help me really understand the Bible, as well as apply it to my life everyday, but none of the books I had did that for me. I have been keeping up with these devotions for 2 weeks now and I LOVE THEM! I love how the questions really help you relate the day’s scripture to your life. Thanks for all you do!

  6. I’m so excited to study Song of Solomon! In fact, my husband is going to be going through it with me! We had so much fun reading together this morning. I love your blog. Thank you for your dedication to it and for pouring yourself out for us! ❤️

    All for His Kingdom,
    Kerri B.

  7. Courtney, are there discussion questions for those of us who believe that this book is about a literal sexual relationship between husband and wife? I feel uncomfortable posting questions about how this relates to my relationship with God when I don’t believe that is what the book is teaching.

    1. Hi Shalane,

Most theologians believe it is both literal and allegorical. Because of the group nature of this study (some things are meant to be kept private and I don’t want to ask leading questions that make some over share inside their groups – which could lead to problems in a marriage) and the fact that we are bringing together singles with marrieds we will not be having literal questions.

But some general questions you group could discuss each day are:

What did you learn from today’s reading that you might apply to your marriage?

Look at how the bride and groom communicated with each other. Did you see any hinderances in today’s reading to the bride and groom’s marriage?

What can you learn from today’s reading that helps you better understand yourself, your mate (if you are single your future mate), the importance of intimacy and purity?

      Hope that helps!
      Courtney

      1. Yes it does. Obviously the husband and wife dont literally think the other has sheep for teeth or anything lol
I think this is where I would stand: “….Scripture clearly teaches that the love between a husband and wife in all its aspects is a metaphor for Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:31-32).
Thus even a non-allegorical interpretation of Song of Solomon, (simply taking the love-song between Solomon and the Shulamite at face value) ultimately points us to Christ and his love for the church. “- John McArthur
So I just don’t want to lead people astray, you know? I appreciate the offering of general questions and your explanation of having singles in the group as well as not wanting a wife to over share.

  8. did I miss Ecclesiastes? I didn’t think we were skipping books? ready for my reading this morning!!!
Thank you for all that you do!

    1. Hi Jenny,

Good question! We are not reading the Bible in order of the Table of Contents.

We will come back and hit Ecclesiastes at a later time. 😉
      Courtney

  9. Hi Courtney,
I am new to Women Living Well. I started with the Proverbs 31 Women study and loved it! I just stumble across WLW on Facebook. Your post have helped me find focus in reading the word! I noticed women are asking to join a group. I’m not sure what that means but I’m sure I would love to join as well. What are the groups and how do I join when it is time? Also I noticed you said we could sign up on a side bar to receive an email each time you blog. Where do I go to do that? Thank you for all that you do!
    Laura

    1. Also is the Song of Solomon study not formatted like the Proverbs 31 Woman study? I enjoyed the videos and break down of the scripture.
      Laura ?

      1. Hi Laura,

The Proverbs 31 study was a special 5 day – in-depth study of that chapter. I usually only post on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during our GMG Bible studies – so more content is coming here to the blog this Wednesday. Until then – if you want more content and encouragement visit the GMG Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/goodmorninggirlswlw – check out the 7am post discussing that days reading – it is awesome!

Also, visit me on instagram at http://www.instagram.com/womenlivingwell – lots of women share using the #GoodMorningGirls hashtag. There’s a great community there to join!

Regrouping is currently closed. Our groups re-open the last week in August for the fall study – so watch for that announcement coming soon!

To subscribe go to the sidebar of the blog (or if you are on a mobile device scroll down past this comment section) and find where it says “SUBSCRIBE HERE: Enter Your Email Address:” Then there is an empty box where you enter your email address and you’ll be all set!

        Hope that helps,
        Courtney

  10. The more I’m studying this the more I agree with a portion of what I found in my Matthew Henry Commentary:
“In this chapter, after the title of the book (Song 1:1), we have Christ and his church, Christ and a believer, expressing their esteem for each other. I. The bride, the church, speaks to the bridegroom (Song 1:2-4), to the daughters of Jerusalem (Song 1:5, 6), and then to the bridegroom, Song 1:7. II. Christ, the bridegroom, speaks in answer to the complaints and requests of his spouse, Song 1:8-11. III. The church expresses the great value she has for Christ, and the delights she takes in communion with him, Song 1:12-14. IV. Christ commends the church’s beauty, Song 1:15. V. The church returns the commendation, Song 1:16, 17. Where there is a fire of true love to Christ in the heart this will be of use to blow it up into a flame.”

Initially when I’ve just read through the book, I thought, well this is somewhat steamy. But God brought Isaiah 55:8 to mind. With that said, I do think there are principles we can apply to marriage in the Song of Solomon.

  11. “In the Songs, we see that true love between man and woman and the accompanying physical affection is a good thing. The book then, even without allegory, reveals a devoted passion among humans which can stand as a model for us in our relationship with God. Through biblical inspiration, GOD tells us in The Song of Solomon that a relationship of love between humans (and with God) is a deeply emotional experience to be cherished and enjoyed.
