10 Lessons From the Book of Job {The Conclusion}

In this very enlightening study through the book of Job, there are 10 lessons we see that are vitally important to every Christian. #Biblestudy #Job #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

This week the Good Morning Girls completed our study in the book of Job!  Way to go!!!  You completed 42 long chapters. I’m so proud of you for sticking with us!

Celebrate - you completed your study in the book of Job!

Here’s 10 Lessons We Learn From the Book of Job

1.)  Bad things happen to good people .

The book of Job opens in verse one by telling us that Job was a blameless, upright man who feared God and turned away from evil.  Then…his life unraveled.  Job’s suffering did not come because he was bad but rather because of his unwavering faithfulness to God. (Job 1:8)

2.) In the midst of suffering, we must never lose our hope in God.

One of the greatest statements of faith in all of scripture is found right in the middle of Job chapter 13. Job says: “Though he slay me, I will hope in him.”  No one and nothing can steal your joy or your peace when your hope is in God.  Never lose your hope in God!

3.)  Our friends may fail us in the midst of our misery but God never does.

Job’s friends put him on the defense.  Job said of his three friends:  Miserable comforters are you all!” (16:2)  Job proclaims where his deep strength flows from:

For I know that my Redeemer lives,
and at the last he will stand upon the earth.
26 And after my skin has been thus destroyed,
yet in my flesh I shall see God,
27 whom I shall see for myself,
and my eyes shall behold, and not another.
    My heart faints within me!
~Job 19:25-27

One day – we will see with our own eyes our Redeemer!  He is alive today and forevermore and because He lives – we can face tomorrow with victory!

4.) Even in the midst of God’s silence, His presence is with us.

Job wrestled and wrestled with God’s silence in the midst of his suffering.  Over 25 times he asked the question “why?” and he continually asked for the opportunity to defend his case before God.  Job had entered the fiery furnace of suffering.

Job writes:

But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.
11 My foot has held fast to his steps;
I have kept his way and have not turned aside.
12 I have not departed from the commandment of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.
~Job 23:10-12

5.)  Wisdom comes from fearing God and turning away from evil.

Humility is key.  Pride can interfere with us following the wise ways of the Lord.  And when pride interferes it clouds our vision, and before we know it – we are on the wrong path towards evil.  Job explains in Job 28:28:

‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’

6.)  God is with us in the midst of our storms.

The Lord is our good shepherd and He never leaves our side.  He walks with us through the valleys.  He restores our soul when we are weary.   He leads us to the path of righteousness when we have lost our way.  He gives us courage when we are scared and he comforts us when we are hurting.  Our God is the God of the storm.

7.) God is in control.

God is the creator of the universe. He is mighty and powerful.  We can trust Him with our lives.  We see in Job chapter one, that nothing came into the life of Job which did not first go through the hands of his loving God.  Every page of scripture points to a sovereign God – from the creation account in Genesis to the return of Christ in Revelation, our God is in complete control.

8.) Sometimes, in the midst of our suffering, we sin.

God accepts a humble and repentant heart. In Job 42, we see Job surrender to God and repent.  Job recognized that God is the creator and he is just his creation.

I despise myself, and repent in the dust of ashes.
~Job 42:6

9.) Sometimes we sin against our friends.

Job’s friends not only failed to be there for Job in a supportive, loving way but they gave poor advice based on their misunderstandings of God.

The Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite: “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.
~Job 42:7

10.)  After repentance and forgiveness comes blessings.

In Job 42, Job made a burnt offering for his friends and prayed for them as God commanded Him to do.  God accepted Job’s prayer for them and THEN Job’s fortunes were restored WHEN he prayed for his friends!

Isn’t this an interesting connection?  Job forgave his friends BEFORE he knew how blessed he was about to become.  It was Job’s prayer that released blessings!

“The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning.”
~Job 42:12

Final Conclusion

When we are feeling stressed and frustrated and wounded by this world may we step back and take a look at all of God’s creation.  Get outside under the big sky and remind yourself who your God is.  Then, get into His word and learn more about God’s love for you.  Trust that if he can create and sustain the entire universe, surely He will take care of you.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Our Heavenly Father feeds the sparrows and clothes the lillies, surely He will take care of us in the midst of our trials.

In the end, God rewarded Job for his faithfulness.

May we be found faithful today!

Keep Walking With the King,

Courtney

  1. Job – a book in the Bible that I hadn’t read in decades. A story known, but unknown!

I cannot begin to grasp the many, many things that this study has opened my eyes and my heart to see. No, I will never lose my hope in God! He is my rock, my hope.

In all things, my God is the Lord Most High! He gives far more abundantly to me than I ever could imagine and certainly more that I deserve.

As I stand in awe of the creations of the Most High God, I can also know that I am loved by that same God! My faith has been renewed, strengthened and embolden.

And all, though a study in the book of Job….who would have ever guessed!

    1. I so needed this to reconcile with God that I know He is in control and He gets me through everything and I will never lose hope!

  2. Courtney I want to thank you for doing these bible studies online and making them available to us. What a gift! This was my first bible study and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but with the help of you and all the others following along I was able to get through it. Your resources and reading everyones comments really helped me understand what I was reading. I am so grateful that I found your blog. I look forward to the book of Mark!

  3. Great lessons from the book of Job. Just curious, did you notice the names of the sons of Job before or after the suffering are not mentioned? Only the names of the daughters after restoration are mentioned, Kezia, Jemimah and Keren-happuch.

Interestingly, the daughters received an equal share of their father’s inheritance. Does this tell us something about the full meaning of restoration in Christ? I think so, especially when you consider the meaning of their names.

    Great post. I love it!

    1. I also spotted that this morning – it’s very significant that this happened in a patriarchal society!
I read this in Charisma: “It is interesting to note that the Bible says Job had seven sons and three daughters—and then it provides the names of the girls only.
Then Job 42:15 says: “In all the land no women were found so fair as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them inheritance among their brothers.”
Why are only the daughters’ names mentioned? Why is there a reference to the girls’ beauty? And why are we told that they were given an inheritance?
Again, the Holy Spirit is showing us God’s heart for women. Although men have abused, marginalized and oppressed women—even in the church—God will have the last word on this subject. This passage in Job, one of the oldest books of the Bible, offers a glimpse into the last days. It signifies a day when women who are empowered by the Holy Spirit will be fully restored to their place of spiritual authority.
Like Job, human beings were stripped of their dignity and spiritual power because of sin. But when Jesus Christ purchased redemption at Calvary, His blood not only paid the full price for our transgressions, it also broke the power of shame, guilt and oppression off of women. It made them beautiful again, and restored to them the right to their spiritual inheritance.”

    2. In the Message translation, it says that Job named his 3 daughters Dove, Cinnamon and Darkeyes. I’m sure if we studied that we would find some relevance.

    3. According to Gills’ commentary, you hit the nail on the head when you said, “Does this tell us something about the full meaning of restoration in Christ? I think so…”.

In his commentary, he points out that Job making no difference between male and female is a picture of us in Christ:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:17

      God is good!

  4. I have really enjoyed this study of Job. I have read Job before, but this time I really read it. I am so thankful to know that I may have the worst trials on this earth. But, God will never fail me. The question Why comes very easy for me. I’m trying hard though to say What do You want me to learn from this trial, What do You want to do in my life or the life of someone who may see how I respond to my trials. Thank you Courtney for leading us in these studies.

    1. In Matthews 6were I read really encourage me, and the book of job also straight me to not give up when things are not going well,, mean I don’t need to speak against God, seeking for solution in a wrong way, I really appreciate your teaching

  5. On a slightly lighter note, if you have young sons who aren’t too keen on reading the Bible or doing devotions with you – read Job to them! I read my 7 year old the passages about the behemoth and the leviathan, and he is hooked!! He drew pictures of what he thinks they looked like, and now he asks me about other things in the Bible and what chapter I’m reading, because he’s now realised that the Bible IS intersting and exciting, and not just for grown-ups! 😉

    1. I told my kids there were unicorns mentioned in Job, they were excited. Didn’t think of reading to them about the others but now plan too. Thanks

  6. Thank you Courtney for these studies! They are just what I needed to get into God’s word and start my day right. Job has taught me that no matter what is happening in my life, God is there. He hasn’t left me and even if I don’t see Him, He is still in control. Praise Him for that. My god is faithful!!

  7. Thank you Courtney for leading us through the book of Job!! Taking it chapter by chapter I really got to know Job. I felt his pain and saw his strength and love for God. Even felt like jumping for joy as he compassionitely prayed for his undeserving friends and the blessings were abundantly restored. Not only that but I can imagine how close Job’s relationship grew with God now! Wow!! Thank you again for your encouragement during a more difficult book to go through:)
    Have a wonderful day:)
    ?
    Beth

  8. Thank you Courtney for encouraging us to read God’s Word every day! The conclusion of Job was exactly what I needed to read this morning. Matthew 6:33,34 was my wedding text and those words always bring comfort and peace in my life. Honestly I’m still playing catch up with the book of Job but have learned so much by reading through each chapter. Job teaches us to trust God and no matter what may happen here on earth we know greater things are yet to come for us in heaven! The story of Job has always been a favorite of mine (in fact my youngest son is named Job!) but working through the book of Job has blessed my life.

  9. The words in Job challenged me to see suffering in the context of a much bigger picture orchestrated by God. I’ve had moments in my life where the suffering seemed to serve no purpose, but as the days went by and I reflected on the suffering, God spoke to my heart and showed me how it was necessary for my own personal growth and betterment. Recently, I had forgotten that truth, but was reminded of it through the reading of Job. I thoroughly enjoyed this study and can’t wait to begin Mark next month!

  10. The Book of Job really opened my eyes. He was faithful to the end no matter what was happening to him and he never lost his faith in God. I really enjoyed the last 5 chapters, which showed the power of God and how AWESOME He is!

Thank you Courtney for your encouraging words throughout this book
I also enjoyed the video of “My Redeemer lives”. I play it all the time and all I can do is weep because it is awesome and I feel the power of God. Looking forward to the book of Mark.

  11. Thank you so much Courtney for hosting these Bible studies! You give such encouragement and motivation to stick with it! Thank you for all you do! (HUGS) 🙂

  12. Thank you Courtney for allowing the Lord to use you for such a time as this. Unfortunately I missed the beginning of this study. This week I came across this site by way of You Vision. I love your Women Living Well/Good Morning Girls site. To answer your question of the day: inthe mist of suffering never loose hope in God. God is indeed in the mist of our storms carrying us by way of his footprints in the sand. Lastly God is definitely in CONTROL of our lives. #theultimatenavigator

  13. Thank you Courtney for going through the book of Job. I have to admit I used to dread reading this book because I am a half-glass-full type of person. I saw all of Job’s suffering and I didn’t want to continue reading it. Now I see that this book points to God’s majesty. He is in control and is steady even when our circumstances are not.
Thank you again! I’ve been extremely blessed by your ministry!

  14. I just discovered your site a couple of weeks before the Job study began. I loved, loved, loved the study. Thank you so much for spending your time developing these study programs for us. It is such a blessing. I thank God for you every morning after I finish the daily memory verse.

  15. I think you conducted this study on Job very well Courtney – it’s a very profound book to go through. It’s come very timely for us as a family too with our own trials we’ve been going through lately. How we respond when trials & tribulations come our way… and the Bible tells us they will.. Life’s not always a bowl of cherries. It literally brings me to my knees in prayer acknowledging my frailness and my need for Him. Not that I’d ever choose any afflictions for myself or would ever wish them upon anyone, but I’ve actually thanked God for my life’s trials so to speak, that it’s been used to bring me to a rightful deeper relationship with Him. And what became a means to cry out to God, like never before, Has actually become a natural desire to automatically waking up knowing I need to put Him first in my life – and I need to communicate with Him on everything.. Then you do come out the other side & do see the blessings from God..

God loves us His children so much!!

  16. Hi Courtney, this was my first time ever doing an online study with an email group and I loved it! Thanks for giving an opportunity like this! Looking forward to the next one coming up.
I do have one request~~ would you consider making the cover picture of your journals to be scenery or something more universal than a white woman? As a woman of color and faith, this is my humble request. The evangelical scene in America is dominated by caucasians (through no fault but it’s a fact), and perhaps it could reach more women globally if the assumption was not that Christianity is a middle class white person’s religion. Even a cup of coffee is a luxury in many countries (and our own urban poor). I’m sure you put a lot of prayer into choosing the right cover picture, so please consider praying more for the new journals coming out. Hope you understand my tone as one of patience and appreciation for everything you’re doing. Lots of blessings to you and your family!

    1. Hi Mei,

Thank you for sharing your request! You’ll be happy to hear that the cover image for the next journal after Mark has already been chosen and it is a woman of color. 🙂 Thank you for your input and so glad you are here!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

      1. Thank YOU for replying! I was praying that my words were not offensive but instead edifying. Praise God that He is moving in mighty ways to open our eyes to His truth!

  17. I would like to be a part of a accountability group! Can anybody point me in the right direction. I would also like to know how to find a new email group as my last group leader would not allow me to share what scripture I was reading(that was a different topic, however the whole Bible ties together). So I left that group over a month ago and have been waiting to find a new group. I have been in other groups over the years and this has never been a problem.

    1. Hi Ingrid,

I apologize that at this time we are not regrouping. We will not be putting groups together again until the summer. I want to encourage you to invite a few friends of your own (even if they live faraway) to be in a group with you. If you need a leader’s manual – just email me and I’ll send one your way. Pray about it – perhaps God will lay on your heart to lead a group since you have been in them and know how it works.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  18. When I got my email about fear for faith and then discovered you had done a study on the book of Job, I could have cried. My life is insane right now. We are financially barely hanging on due to a long layoff, my daughter is a drug addict and pregnant and has stolen from us and has devastated us financially, I’ve injured my shoulder so I can’t work any longer until I recover and the list goes on. Is there any way I can get any information or the book to read on my own? I just told my brother I feel abandoned but I know mentally and spiritually I am not, but it does feel that way some days. I am still trusting the Lord even when I feel he is silent. So if you can direct me to the study and or book. I would so appreciate it. Thank you and God bless.

    Cathy

  19. You guys left out 1 of the very very most important lessons and that is God’s punishment of the wicked is sometimes deferred Jobe 2423 that would be giving him to be in safety wear on he rest yet his eyes are upon their way Jobe is saying that at times it seems like even the most wicked are in safety and they rest in that safety and then says that it seems that God for a Time watches the cruelties of oppressors without interference and other words he does not immediately punish their wicked conduct Jobe 2424 they are exalted for a little while but are gone and brought low they are taken out of the way as all other and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn this means that many of the wicked live out their lives seemingly experiencing no interference from God and even die as the rights as to they die a natural death joke 24 25 and if it be not so now who will make me a liar and make my speech nothing worth Jobe is saying that his words are true and that even his three friends know it in fact Jobe statements are correct God will not contradict him but at last when he does appear he will contradicts job’s three friends God deals with each person on an individual basis B they write us or unrighteous and in fact the Lord tells us that it is not our business how he deals with others and that is such an important lesson to learn thank you very much I am Larry Harrison from I am the sound man at the Tonto Basin Bible Church and Tonto Basin Arizona

  20. Some points I came away with from the Book of Job.
    1. God is not the source of calamity or suffering or illness–Satan is.
    2. Man has a tendency to put the blame on God for people’s sufferings and judge them as being outside of God’s will, when all along it is Satan attacking the suffering ones.
    3. Satan is the source of all evil in the world.

  21. This is one of the most heart-touching stories for anyone who is feeling dejected and useless. Indeed, there is only one reliable helper, – God, the creator of heaven and earth. Where does my hope come from?. My hope comes from the Lord. Amen.

  22. I will remain strong in the Lord. all it takes is perseverance, endurance, Trust and above all , Faith is the key to success because the almighty is not silent. At times he leaves the the devil to tempt us in so that his name is glorified. If Jobs managed to keep his promise, we today can too.

  23. Thank you for these great lessons .I have read Job 24 and have been amused of oppressors and evil doers.God gives them chance to show their greatness and then before they last cuts them short like grass. They like doing things at night and during the day they are not seen.Have searched my heart and I pray not to be waved by the things of darkness because of my suffering in any manner.

  24. thank you for the lessons we learn from the book of job. God loves us always inspite of our being a sinner. just like job we must worship God in the midst of suffering.

  25. My son picked the book of Job yesterday during his turn to lead devotion. He said he had always wanted to read the book of Job. We allowed him the space and right to go ahead and oh my God we had such an awesome time just going through the first chapter of Job. I hope we shall catch up with rest of you in the next book. I have read this book severally but I guess with this input and commentaries, I feel so rich with content. Godfrey Makindu, Nairobi Kenya

  26. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Jesus,
The Lord revealed to me recently Job as a sign of what I was and still I
am going through and for your strengthening I will tell you honestly, I
have lived decades and decades and decades of Hell with Satan always on my back relentlessly.
After baptism in Christ at Canterbury Cathedral, I received 3 more years of tests, trials, pain, depression and deprivation and every other thing you could possibly imagine. Losing all of my family to terrible deaths losing my home of which I had become homeless not once but twice after my father died and stayed in a monastery until I could right myself back on my feet as our Lord was and is always watching lovingly over me and I know it was Him that
put me in that monastery as by that time I was completely Broken.

Also, I have to my amazement a testimony from GOD no less in regard
to what he has in store for me So my friends JOB has nothing on me and Truly I
tell you my FAITH IN GOD/JESUS is stronger now than it has ever been Amen I tell you Praise God and Blessed be the name of our Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour!
God Bless you all in your afflictions and take heart.
    Jacqueline Sinclair

  27. I’ve read Job and I am struggling to understand this, the blameless man Was broken because god removed his protection because satan wanted to make a bet with god? Then what he had was doubled. What did job learn than he didn’t already know or do?

  28. John, remember it’s not about Job! It’s Gods attempt to teach the rest of us through Job’s example.
