Where Is Wisdom?

Man puts great effort into gaining wealth but few put that sort of effort into finding wisdom. But where is wisdom? Where can it be found? #Biblestudy #Job #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

Wisdom is the right use of knowledge.

To know is not to be wise.  Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it.  There is no fool so great a fool as the knowing fool.

But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.

~Charles Spurgeon

As we come to chapter 28 in the book of Job, we find Job asking this question twice,

“Where is wisdom found?” (12,20)

Job speaks of how men dig deep into the earth to find treasures of sapphires and gold and iron and copper.  Man puts great effort into gaining wealth but few put that sort of effort into finding wisdom.  Wisdom is not necessarily found in college lecture halls or in libraries.  It takes more than mere natural intelligence or street smarts.

Where is wisdom?

Job says in verses 15-19 of chapter 28, it cannot be purchased with gold or silver, the price is above pearls.  It cannot be bought!  It cannot be obtained cheaply or easily.  If you have found a wise man or woman – you have found one who has put great effort into pursuing wisdom.

Where is wisdom?

Job explores where the birds of the air fly and into the heavens where rain and lightening and thunder take place.  Wisdom is not found in the heights nor depths of the earth.

Where is wisdom?

Wisdom is found only through the creator of the sapphires and gold and the heavens above where birds fly.

It is found in God alone.

But how do we get it from God?

It takes humility.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom.
Proverbs 11:2

What does humility that leads to wisdom look like?

Job explains in Job 28:28:

‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’

1.) Wisdom is found in the fear of the Lord.

2.) Wisdom is found in the turning away from evil.

The fear of the Lord flows out of a heart that is humble and loves the Lord deeply.  A desire to be faithful and loyal to God wholeheartedly, out of a reverence of his mighty power and deep love for us, results in wisdom.

Pride can interfere with us following the wise ways of the Lord.  And when pride interferes it clouds our vision, and before we know it – we are on the wrong path towards evil.

Evil comes in so many packages.  It can come in the form of greed, gossip, slander, anger, discontentment, hatred, lies, gluttony, worry, fear, jealousy, pride and more.  We all struggle in different areas of our lives where we need great wisdom to help us overcome our struggles or to determine our paths.

Humility is the key.

We need to admit that we need help. We need God’s wisdom!  We need to search for it as one digs for gold!

None of us are immune from needing God’s wisdom or from slipping into evil.  Everyday, temptation lies all around us and everyday…I slip.  Sometimes it’s into anger because my patience is short while homeschooling my kids, sometimes it’s into selfishness and missing the needs of others right in front me, and sometimes it’s worry and not trusting God with my circumstances.

We all need wisdom everyday and no matter how many times we read our Bible – each day as we wake, we need to refocus our thoughts on Jesus. Because I wake a sinful, wayward girl every morning.  There is nothing godly in my flesh. But when I surrender my heart, my thoughts and my day to God and turn to him in his Word and prayer, He renews my ungodly thoughts.  He changes me from the inside out and he leads me into his ways of wisdom.

Where is wisdom?

It is found in God alone.

Let’s humbly draw near to God and His Word today.  No matter what you’ve done – good or bad – He loves you so.

Walk with the King,

Courtney

  1. Stress at work…Stress at home…some positive, some negative – all is worthless without going to God, resting in His arms, and asking for wisdom. Thankful for the important reminder this morning!

  2. I found your blog in October of 2015 and commented on your post about making your home a haven. After your advice I purchased my very first bible! God has changed me so much. It actually makes me teary to think about how much he has helped me. My husband has noticed such a change in me that he actually wakes up 10minutes before I do every morning and has a cup of tea waiting for me next to my bible and journal. The love love pouring into house is amazing and my 3year old has taken to it like a duck to water. She says the most beautiful prayer’s.

Thank you so much for helping me on my jorney to God.

  3. Spot on for where I am in this season. I’ve put myself completely at the mercy of Him. All troubles, strife, stress…it is not mine to control or have the answers to. I am patiently waiting for Him and I will follow His lead. Blessings to you and yours. You are such a blessing to our family and I thank you for that.

  4. Excellent. I want to read through this again and really think on it and so worth sharing out on social media also.

    Thank you

  5. Good morning,
I seems when I make the worst mistakes and things go wrong is when I selfishly leave God out of what I am doing. Make decisions to put God first, ask for direction and help from him things just go best aND seem to fall inot place. Wisdom is searching God first, committing our plans to the Lord. All else will follow.

  6. My family, church family and friends have had a drastic turn. My life, as I expected it would be at this season of my life, is not what I expected, nor what I looked forward to! I know the Lord has a purpose and plan for me and my family. I am waiting, but first I must first seek His Wisdom and make changes in my walk with Christ! Above all, I needed this to help me know He still loves me!!!
I cannot do any good for my Lord as things are. I definitely need to seek His Wisdom! Thank you for this study of Job!! I can relate!! Pray for me, please!!

  7. Courtney, I’m loving reading through the book of Job, although I have to admit it’s been a tiring struggle for me to keep up precisely at the moment with homeschooling 4 girls, & a new baby girl. Still I’ve kept up with all the books of the bible in order with you all. Thanks for the reminder that we’re all in this race together, that we all have the same struggles with our worldly flesh. I know for myself I can’t live this Christian life in my own strength. Oh how I need the mercy of God & His Holy Spirit. Thanks for the accountability & persevering on in Him!
