The Book of Deuteronomy Overview

Deuteronomy is known as the long farewell speech of Moses and the second giving of the law. The nation of Israel had spent 40 years wandering in the desert. The old generation had all but died off and would not enter the Promised Land. Now, a younger generation would go in, to claim the promises that God had made to their forefathers.

Moses wanted to remind the Israelites of the law that God had given them. The tone is different from the first giving of the law in the book of Exodus. Now, the tone is one of legacy and love. The heart is that the children of Israel – and us today – would obey God because we love Him. We need to teach our children – and our children’s children- to love God and obey Him also.

God had done so many great things. They had experienced his love and protection. The children of Israel should have had no problem following him. They knew His expectations to obey. They had learned the holiness of God and that because of His holiness they too should be holy.

The Purpose: To remind Israel what God had done and to help them rededicate their lives to Him. For us, we can be reminded of the loving kindness of our God and renew our commitment to love and obey Him.

The Author: Moses. Although it is said that the end of the book, where it gives the account of Moses’ death, might have been written by Joshua.

Time Period: The book was written to Israel around 1407 BC.

The Key Verses: Deuteronomy 6:5-7

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”

The Outline:

  1. What God has done for us (1:1-4:43)
This is Moses’ first address.   Moses reviews the mighty acts of God for the nation of Israel.
  2. Principles of Godly Living (4:44-28:68)
  • Obeying God’s law brought blessing and disobeying brought misfortune.
  • In this section we see:
  • The Ten Commandments
  • The command to love the Lord your God
  • Laws for proper worship
  • Laws for ruling the nation
  • Laws for human relationships
  • Consequence for obedience and disobedience3. A Call for Commitment to God (29:1-30:20)
God’s covenant to His people is renewed in Moab and God’s people are called to love and obey God.
  1. The Change in Leadership (31:1-34:12)
Moses made mistakes, yet he was still a good leader and carried out God’s commands.

Deuteronomy has much for us to learn. We are reminded that God is involved in every area of our lives. We are reminded that obedience and disobedience carry inevitable consequences. God is still calling us to be committed to Him today. We can also learn that we all make mistakes but God can still use us despite our mistakes and those mistakes should not stop us from living with integrity and a commitment to godliness.

May we see the love that the Lord has for us and may we love him back with all of our heart, soul and strength!

  5. Hello! My name is Megan Lucas. I’m from Savannah, Georgia. I’ve been following GMG for a while now, but never have done any studies yet and no GMG group either! This is my first study and I bought the study guide from Amazon too!! What I see is just AWESOME and I’m very satisfied with this study guide! So I’m going to go ahead very soon and splurge on the rest of the study guides to go back and study the other books in the Bible! I’m so happy I’ve found a great way to study the Holy Bible! I’ve been searching and researching for what seems like F-O-R-E-V-E-R lol, and I’ve decided that GMG is just the right place for me!

Thank you SO much for making this possible!! Glory to God!!!!

  6. Hello

  8. Hi I’m Nickle. God brought me to GMG a week before we started reading the book of Mark. I’m from the Philippines and do not belong in any group. I thought it would be cool to read along because you provide the materials to aid us in studying. I was about to start chapter 1 when I realized I should print out the questions that would help me in reflecting His word. I finished reading the book of Mark but was not able to journal chapters 12-16. I’m excited with this reading because I’m committing to doing it day by day no matter what. 😀

  9. Hi Ladies! My name is Jana and I am recently new to GMG. I was hunting for a good daily bible study that focused on scripture and had a hard time finding one I enjoyed, until I came here 🙂 I’m currently traveling abroad for the year and have read GMG in England, France, Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia, soon to be Italy as well. I’m thankful for the internet so I can follow along with this community!

  10. Hello! My name is Melissa, I am new to the GMG group, but I’m very excited to study with you all. I don’t have a group where I am yet, Aurora, Colorado.

  12. Kia ora & Talofa,

  13. Hi everyone! My name is Audra and I am from a small town in SE Oklahoma. I have been with Good Morning Girls since 2014 and was able to start this journey through the Bible with the book of Esther! I’m not in a group…with 2 young kids, my Bible reading time changes each day, so I choose to study on my own. I’m a homeschooling mom of a 7 year old and a 3 year. I’m a pastor’s wife of a small country church and enjoy studying the Bible, drinking coffee, reading Amish Inspirational books, organizing, and spending time outdoors. I’m excited to dive into chapter one of Deuteronomy this morning! I hope you ladies have a great week!

  14. The love of my life and I are starting on this journey together with this teaching. We are very excited!

  15. Hi Courtney and all GMG sisters,
I’m Lisa. I’m from New Jersey. I have been following GMG for a few years now. I have facilitated a small GMG online group for a few studies. We have been the same closed group for those same years and they are wonderful ladies who I still today turn to for prayer and encouragement. I encourage all to be in a group. That being said, I’ve migrated here to study the word of Deuteronomy solo this time around. I’m excited to get to know the Lord better and a fresh perspective on this book.

  16. Hi!
My name is Stacey, I’m new to GMG. I am so excited to start studying with a group of on-line sisters in Christ! (I am flying solo here on my end).
I have been reading God’s Word for years, but not with much structure or accountability. I’m hoping this study will help me become a lot more disciplined, and a lot more focused.
God has been so good to me over the years, I want to give back as much as humanly possible to Him.
Thank you for creating this study.
    Blessings!

  17. I’m so excited to begin studying with you again Courtney!! Our church has been going through Mark and I had just finished Job not long ago. I think the last study I did was Acts. I read every email you send even if I don’t participate in the study. I was able to encourage a friend who lost her mother-in-law suddenly in early December with Job articles you wrote!! Her mother-in-law was more like a mother to her. I can’t say enough good things about how your ministry blesses me!! I used to be on Facebook but it was a time waster for me. I got convicted. But sometimes I wish I was still on just for Good morning Girls. I enjoy the Old Testament so I’m excited about Deuteronomy. Leviticus was a little hard to get through but you and your team made it so relatable. God bless you!! Confetti cued!!! ?

  18. Good Morning! My name is Jaime and I live in Belton, KY (that’d be in the Western half). I found GMG on Instagram in the middle of Job posts, but did not do a study. When Mark rolled around, I zipped over to amazon and ordered my first journal! I love it! I am slightly obsessed with planners, listing, and writing utensils (ha, the hubs gave me a look last night as I prepared my spread to finish 1 Peter and said “you might have problem.”). I have what I call a Spiritual & Prayer journal; a 5×8 binder decked out with sections for Sermon Notes, Bible Study, and Prayer journal. And pens, colored pencils, and higliders, and…ok I might have an issue. LOL In the break between Mark & Deuteronomy I’ve read Esther and 1 Peter. I’ve used my binder for both of those and it works for me. I am excited that I have finally found something to keep me motivated and accountable for reading the Bible. AND THIS TIME perhaps I can make it thru Deuteronomy with out my eyes glazing over! Next goal is Leviticus. That is the real test! -snort- Have a blessed day Ladies and Thank you Courtney!

    1. P.S. – I really like the printable you supply us with. I am leaving the bookmarks in my Bible as I finish a book. It satisfies my organizing quirks! And this time I am trying out the printed list of discussion questions. I am thinking of using them as a prompt for my prayer journal.

  19. Good morning!
My name is Gail. I started following GMG this year. I am excited about this study in Deuteronomy. I am on Little Rock, AR. I don’t have a group.

  20. HI my name is Cynthia. I’m so excited to be starting this. I could hardly wait for today. I live in Hammond, IN. I do not belong to a group. So excited!

  21. I’m Lorelie, all the way up in Manitoba Canada. I’ve been following Courtney and her studies for a few years now. Even though I’m not a member of a group, I simply cannot describe the amazing community I feel knowing that so many others are reading with me. I wake up at 6:30 for prayer and these devotions. God bless you Courtney!

  22. Hi- I am Adele-Alys from Matthews NC. When GMG began their Read Thru The Bible journey in the Summer of 2014, I stepped out on faith and agreed roads an email group. Sixteen (16) of us are still together….& still reading thru the Word. This year…I picked up a FB group as well.

  23. My name is Aundrea and I am from North Mississippi, right next to Memphis, TN. I am new to GMG and look forward to growing in knowledge and fellowship of Gods word with you all. I first found out about GMG right before the Mark study.

  24. Hi!
I am Tameasa and live in Central Florida. I am happily married to my husband, Dave, for 19 years and we have 1 son who is 16 (and he is going to China this summer on a mission trip). Dave and I are very active in our church — he is a deacon and we are also the youth leaders. I am also very involved in the Women’s ministry. In addition to our church work, my husband is a Gideon.

I attended Liberty University and worked as a paralegal for many years until I began homeschooling my son 10 years ago.

I have been following Good Morning Girls for about 9 months and have enjoyed all of the Bible studies we have done.

  25. Good morning! My name is Alicia, I first did the Mark study with you, so I am fairly new. I am doing an online Facebook group study. I love all of your material. The color coding is new for me, and I am loving it! It’s such a great way for me to breakdown the scriptures.

I have two little ones (4 &1) so I wake up before them and get in my study before they wake up. My 4 year old loves to do the scripture of the day with me. He is getting good a tracing his letters and learning about Jesus! This has been a great tool for me to teach him God’s word and learn the Word of God.

  26. Hi!
    I am Anne-Laure from Belgium.
I found out about GMG last week as I was looking for some kind of online Bible-study. I look forward to the fellowship around Bible reading! I am doing the study along with our oldest daughters (7 and 5 yo), who do it at their own level.

  27. Hello! My name is Rebecca and I’m excited to start this study and grow in my relationship with the Lord! You all seem like such lovely ladies and I hope to make new friends as well 🙂

  28. HI. My name is Thembie. I am new on GMG and I am from Johannesburg, South Africa.
So excited to join in on the bible studies.

  29. Hi, My mane is Tondra and I live in pennsylvania. I am new here and this will be my first time doing the exercises and the reaading. I did order the book amd it will be here friday. I am very excited to join this study group and learn about the bible. I have not had very much to do with bible learning for a long time and now I am so excited to start again.
I am so happy I found this group and have other people to talk to about the bible.

  30. I started following mid 2014 and have kept up daily. The reading a chapter a day is a great way to get into the word. I also read my devotional along with your readings and that gave me more background. So many things I did not know about God’s word. I do the SOAP method sometimes and I also have written out the complete chapter at other times. I also do digital pages of the scriptures that I sometimes share on my blog. All helps and I think I have grown even as I approach 70 years of age…never too late to absorb more. My word chosen for this year is RENEW and in that vain, I was baptized for the second time at Easter, although to be honest it has not been like when I was born again and saved and baptized the first time in the 1970’s because my heart never actually left for good.
I hail from Ohio also…born and raised. So hi neighbor. 🙂

  31. Hi my name is Damien. I am a stay-at-home mom in Indiana. I have actually worked hard since high school and just recently was blessed to be able to start staying home about 4 years ago. I only have one child left at home and she is in high school so we will be empty nesters before we know it. ? I have been trying to follow along with GMG for a couple of years. I don’t always finish them, but I keep coming back and trying. I really enjoy this group and I am glad to be a part of it.

  32. Hi! My name is Lisa and I’m from Braintree Massachusetts. This blog has been such a blessing to me since September of 2013, just a few months before I got married (2 days after Christmas)!! I have never been part of a group and have just used each series for individual study. I love going through each book of the bible like this, and it’s getting me to read books that I had never read before. Thanks Courtney for your wonderful ministry here, and for helping me understand so much more about living out a Godly marriage, homemaking, and raising kids (even though we don’t have any yet)!

  33. Hi. My name is Lorie & this is my first time participating in your Bible Study. I look forward to learning & growing with you.

  34. Hi All. My name is Serena and I hail from a little town called Moree in New South Wales, Australia. I am blessed to be a stay-at-home Mum to two little ones (1 and 3) and wife to an amazing husband. But I felt like I was drowning and so missed studying the word.

And then God reconnected me with a friend (ironically my bridesmaid) who was feeling the same! She suggested GMG and we decided to start with Dueteronomy. Thank you so so SO much for this amazing resource and ministry. It is helping two young mums so much! We are accountable via text message and plan to catch up for a chat and pray every few weeks at the park!

I look forward to keeping up with you online and may God bless ALL of you as we delve deeper into His word! ‘Rena ?

  35. Hey I’m Carly in Central Florida. I found Courtney 6-7 years ago when I first got married – looking for marriage encouragement. This is the first time I’m going to try to stick it out through one of the studies, just going through it on my own. Saw it today (Monday) on Facebook so I will jump in right away! Thanks for being faithful to host these. Hope your family is doing well.

  36. Hi my name s Ciba from Texas. This is the first time I join GMG. Im really looking forward to this bible study.

  37. Hi, my name is Renee and I am from the Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.I am not in a group, this is my first study with GMG. I am excited to get deeper in the word with you.

  38. Hello! I live in California & have been studying together with your group just this year. I did the book of Job using the SOAP method. I do a little color coding in my Bible but would like to do more! For years whenever I see the word heart I put a heart around it & color it in with my pink Bible highlighter. This month I have been a Christian 41 years. I love Peabea’s word for the year: RENEW!
I am looking forward to studying through the book of Deuteronomy with everyone.
    Have a Terrific Tuesday!

  39. My name is Robyn, and I am so happy I have stumbled upon this series of Bible studies!!!
Quick question….the discussion that takes place on Facebook each weekday at 7:45 am….
Is it a video type thing, or just people posting comments? If it is a video, is it posted so it can be replayed (as I am on my school bus at that time of morning)?
Looking forward to these through the Bible studies. Thank you for making them available.

  40. Hello Everyone! This is my first bible study online.. Read the first two chapters…going to love this..
I am so excited..I live in Southern Illinois.
I do have one question: where can I go and see what to high lite in the Bible? I see pictures but not big enough to see what has been done.
    Have a great Day!!
    Thank You

    1. Hi Rita –

Visit us over on instagram at http://www.instagram.com/womenlivingwell or by using the hashtag #goodmorninggirls You will find LOTS of women’s Bibles color coded. No two Bibles look perfectly alike because there is no right or wrong way to do this and sometimes verses could be multiple different colors.

      Hope that helps!
      Courtney 🙂

  41. Hi! My name is Tatiana and I live in Eastern Central Florida. I’m a SAHM juggling taking care of my 2.5 year old daughter and attending college online.
I’ve been trying to look for an online bible study group for a while and I’m excited to start this study on the book of Deuteronomy.
How does one join a group, and where is the group? I don’t have a Facebook (deactivated due to not wanting it anymore, lol).
Anyways, hi and thanks for this awesome website!

    1. I was wondering the same how do we sign up for this bible study? How do we subscribe to the blog. I am new to a bible study online! Thanks for the help!!

      1. Hi Tatiana and Melissa,

Welcome – I’m so glad you are both here! Our groups are open three times a year – January, June and September. So we’ll be opening groups soon for the summer session. I apologize that right now there are none open.

The best way to join us for this session is out on instagram or Facebook and here on the blog on Mondays and Fridays. You can subscribe to the blog along the sidebar of the blog (if you are on a phone scroll down below the comment section) and you’ll find it there.

So glad you are on this journey with us!
        Courtney 🙂

        1. Sorry another question!? How do we register or actually get added to the group for summer? Do we register on a website?

          1. Hi Melissa,

In June, there will be a post where I give out links to all the open groups and how to join. So that will be coming soon.
            Courtney 🙂

  44. Greetings to all of you.
    I am Susanne from Denmark.
I recently read Deuteronomy. But as I would very much like to read it again and the way that Women Living Well Ministries assists in reading the Bible interests me very much, I decided to give it a try. So here I am with you. <3

  45. Hello my name is Pamela. I’m living in a small little town called Assiniboia, Saskatchewan . This is my second study. Enjoyed going through mark right before Easter . It put it in a better perspective for me. I’m not in any group study or anything and was feeling much like the other ladies( needing something else in my life and that encouragement from the lord ) we’ve had a tough few months and doing the mark study has really helped. Just a bit of history there ; my hubby and I have been married 6 yrs and we’ve been trying to have a baby since then and the doctors told us in December a few weeks before Christmas, that the only way we can have children is thru in vitro. It’s tough because it’s so expensive and I was encouraged by the ladies that wrote that they are blessed by the lord with their children… Glad to hear that it’s a blessing !!

  46. Hi everyone, Im shelly Blake from mannford oklahoma. I started gmg with the book of proverbs. Im not in a group, but enjoy doing this every morning. I look at the facebook gmg.

  48. Hello I’m Melinda. I’m in Central Florida and new to the group. I’m running a little behind…

  49. Hello I’m Gerry..from Panama City Beach Florida..so glad I found this bible study. It’s encouraging to me to read everyone’s comments..looking forward to learning and growing in the Word..God Bless.
