How Is Your Spiritual Eye Sight?

Our eyes are like mini-cameras. But as amazing and complex as our eyes are - they are incredibly limited and flawed. How is your spiritual eye sight? #Biblestudy #Judges #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

The eye is complex.

Even Darwin questioned his own theory of evolution with his thoughts on the complexity of the structure of the eye.

Charles Darwin writes:

“to suppose that the eye, with all its inimitable contrivances for adjusting the focus to different distances, for admitting different amounts of light, and for the correction of spherical and chromatic aberration, could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree.”
(The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, pp. 143–144.)

Our eyes are like mini-cameras. We take them everywhere we go!  With a pupil that contracts letting more or less light in and eye lids that work like windshield wipers – it’s simply amazing!

But as amazing and complex as our eyes are – they are incredibly limited and flawed.

They are limited to only seeing physical things – like the device you are reading this on, your coffee cup, your car and your home. These physical things are only part of our reality.

How is your spiritual eye sight?

The spiritual realm is just as real but can only be seen through our spiritual eyes.

Jesus says:

The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.

But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Matthew 6:22-23

Your eyes are the windows to your life.

Physical vision problems are common.  It is estimated that around 75% of adults wear glasses.  That’s a lot of us!

Spiritual vision problems are just as common.  Too many of us – me included – get caught up in seeing the world around us, just in the physical sense. When we do that, we lose our spiritual focus.

We must correct our spiritual vision problems!

The final verse in the book of Judges says:

25 In those days there was no king in Israel.
Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
(Judges 21:25)

This is not talking about the pagan people that surrounded the nation of Israel – this was talking about —God’s people!

In those days, EVERYONE did what was RIGHT in their own eyes.

Did you notice it does not say – everyone did what was “wrong” in their own eyes.

They were sincerely trying to do right – but if you read all of the book of Judges – you saw how violent and dark this book of the Bible was.  They missed the mark and they didn’t even know they were missing it.  They thought what they were doing was right!

Their right – was actually very wrong.

Friends, this way of thinking is still in our churches today.  Rather than looking to God’s word for truth – we go with our gut or with what makes us happy or with what’s popular in the world.  We do what is right in our own eyes..assuming God is going to be okay with our own ways and ideas…

…and that is very wrong.

God’s written Word is meant to be our daily bread, our living water, and the lamp to our feet.  It is alive and active – no other book in the world is alive and active.  It is sharper than any two edged sword (Hebrews 4:12)!

But sometimes we neglect the reading of God’s Word and we blindly make life’s choices.

If you woke up blind today – it would have freaked you out!

The darkness would have required immediate help.

Jesus said – our eyes are like lamps.  If our spiritual eyes are bad, we will be filled with darkness. But Jesus came as the light of the world!  We must let his light shine into every nook and cranny of our lives.

How is your spiritual eye sight?

Has darkness clouded your vision in certain areas of your life?

Has a difficult circumstance in your life led you to be tempted to do what is right in your own eyes, rather than in God’s eyes.

Turn to God in His Word and let Him enlighten you.

The precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
    enlightening the eyes.
(Psalm 19:8)

Do not trust your physical eyes alone – they may lead you astray.

16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
(1 John 2;16)

Remember that sin is not far from us – when we suppress the truth – or we do not seek God for His truth – we are doing what is right in our own eyes.  Sin is fun for a season but this always leads to eventual pain and suffering.

Is there a battle today that you are fighting, that looks hopeless to the human eye?

Then take a second look at your circumstances with your spiritual eyes.

Our God is the God of the impossible (Matthew 19:26).

Our God is greater (1 John 4:4).

Our God is able (Ephesians 3:20).

There is always hope when our eyes are on the Lord (Romans 15:13).

And remember – just as our eyes need to be on the Lord – God’s eyes are on you.

He loves you and is taking care of you.

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil;
    he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.

Blindness leads to fear but those who believe and see clearly – can live fearlessly.

Keep believing.

Walk with the King,

Courtney

  6. Thank you for such a wonderful bible study!! The
study of Judges has really caused me to yearn for more and more of God’s Word. Every morning, I look forward to reading and studying His Word.

  7. Thank you Courtney, for all the work you do, your ministry and the integrity of your faith to what the Bible says. I found this a hard and harsh book to study, but the resounding message was the Israelites doing what was right in their own eyes. I see much of this happening today, too. I pray that whatever is happening in your life, you will find rest, peace, joy and the strength you need to walk through it, and feel Gods presence by your side.
    Much love, prayer and hugs

  8. Thank you Courtney for your ministry !! T has given me an avenue to my bible reading that makes it less overwhelming. A place to start and insights to think about.

I found the book of Mark and Numbers journal on amazon but where can I get Levictus and Genesis as they are not available on amazon
Thank you !! God Bless you and your children !

  9. Very good article! And you’re right, there is much blindness in churches & among God’s people today – choosing to believe & teach what is right in their own eyes rather than God’s truth. Blindness does create fear, but I also think we need to bear in mind that many choose to be blind because they are afraid of what the Truth really means. “The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” (Psalm 19:8) This verse must be referring to God’s instructions of how to live a life that pleases Him, which are found in Genesis through Deuteronomy – because it is all they had at the time. If one really believes what this verse says, how can they then say that those instructions have been done away with? If Jesus is God, & He is the same yesterday, today, & tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8), how can He contradict Himself by changing everything & therefore not being the same yesterday, today, & tomorrow? There are so many more examples of mankind teaching what is right in his own eyes. Thank you so much! for pointing out that we really do need to pay attention & check our own eyesight so we don’t become blind & go astray!

  10. Thank you Courtney I absolutely needed this today. I know my God is Sovereign but I often allow people and circumstances to obscure my spiritual eyesight. I know Jesus will use what He needs to to swing me gently to His vision for my life. This morning as I try to fill up I came across this and I know He is prodding me. God bless you in this New Year. I know His plans for your life are big. He will reign and you are held always in the arms of the One who never leaves.
