It’s Time to Begin! {Intro and Resources for 1 Samuel 1-5}

Join Good Morning Girls as we read through the Bible cover to cover one chapter a day. Here are the resources you need to study the Book of 1 Samuel. #Biblestudy #1Samuel #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

Cue the Confetti!  It’s time to begin!!!  I am so excited to begin the Book of 1 Samuel with you.

I was amazed at all the places from around the world you all are joining us!  Not only do we have 20 International Groups on our leadership team – which include translators in Bulgarian, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Dutch, French, Italian, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Norwegian, Portuguese, Serbian, Spanish, Botswana, and Sweden – but in the comment section of the last post I asked where you were from and we had comments from women in nearly all 50 states. (Hello Good Morning Girls from Hawaii and Alaska – I see you!!!)

We also had Good Morning Girls comment from in: Germany, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Tanzania, the Philippines, the Netherlands, the Middle East, Austria, England, Norway, UK, New Zealand, India, Nigeria, Botswana, Dubai, Romania, Hungary and Jerusalem, Israel.

What a slice of heaven!  Awesome! Welcome everyone!  I’m so glad we can all take this journey together!

This is going to be a really great read.  In the book of 1 Samuel, we will see how the sovereignty of God is always at work in the lives of His people and how God does not choose who He uses based on appearances.  We will look at the example of David and Jonathan’s faithful friendship and the courage of a shepherd boy facing a giant.  This is going to be so good!

Here’s The Book of 1 Samuel Overview

The book of 1 Samuel is about the lives of Samuel, Saul and David. As the book of Judges ends, we find there was no king in Israel and everyone was doing what was right in their own eyes. Israel was at a spiritual low point, as their priesthood and judges were corrupt.

Israel desired to be like the other nations and so they demanded to have a King. So God gave Israel what they wanted and Samuel anointed Saul as King. Through a series of bad choices and disobedience of God’s will, Saul ended up rejected by God. A new king was chosen, David, a man after God’s own heart. After David defeated a giant named Goliath, Saul grew jealous of David and sought to kill him.

While David was on the run from Saul, twice he had the opportunity to take Saul’s life but instead he honored the king. In the end, Saul tragically died while on the battlefield fighting the Philistines.

Here are this week’s Reflection & Discussion Questions

{If you do not have a group, use these for a personal time of reflection.}:

Chapter 1

Hannah poured her soul out before the Lord passionately, in silent prayer.

Who or what is on your heart today that needs your fervent prayers? Pause now and silently lay your requests before the Lord.

Chapter 2

After God answered Hannah’s prayers for a son, she praised God and was full of thanksgiving.

Take a moment and share a praise. What prayer request has God answered for you?

Chapter 3

God called Samuel three times before Samuel recognized God’s voice.

We must be listening to God, as we read His Word. Share a verse or passage of scripture that means a lot to you because God has clearly spoken to you through it.

Chapter 4

Israel expected a victory because the ark was with them but their disobedience led to defeat.

God is always with you and wants to give you victory but sin holds us back. Confess here below, any sin that is holding you back today.

Chapter 5
False gods will always fail before the One True God! One day every knee will bow to Him.

How does this bring you comfort to see the power of your God displayed in 1 Samuel 5?

Special Note: For those who have done previous studies with GMG, we are discontinuing the Reflection Question Graphics due to the length of the question not fitting on a graphic. Going forward, they will be printed in Monday’s Resource post in this format.  Please copy and paste them in your emails or Facebook groups.  Thank you!

The Verses of the Day:

I encourage you to choose which verse you’d like to memorize or meditate on.  The printable below includes all 5 verses of the day — for the entire week!  Print and cut them out and put them in the bathroom, kitchen, beside your bed and computer and use them for meditation throughout the week.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. – Joshua 1:8

  1. I can’t wait. I’ve been counting down. So ready to have you back on my daily routine. I need normal again.
Thank you so much for providing this to us. Looking forward to a great year.

      1. Courtney,
I’m so glad you’re back! I’ve been thinking about so much in the last several months. The LORD really had you heavy on my heart. You are loved by so many.
I have a question. My 17 yr old son is doing the Priceless devo completely on his own initiative and he has asked me a couple of very thought provoking (for me) questions. Last night he asked me, “What does treating girls in an understanding way mean exactly?” His desire is to honor the LORD in his life and as a husband one day so he is studying now. Y’all, Please help me give a thorough answer from the perspective of yours and other women, as well as my own.
        I love you, Courtney,
        Blessings to you,
        Rebecca

  2. I’m really excited about doing this for the first time. I do have a question….are we to color with the colors throughout our reading if it fits in the color description. I can’t seem to find instructions on the coloring of the verses.

    1. Hi Diane,

There’s a youtube in this blog post that explains the coloring method – it’s below the Verses of the Day. Also, out on Instagram, I post daily photos of the coloring if you want to see how others are doing it. There is no right or wrong way to do it – it’s just a tool to help you slow down and soak in God’s Word…and it’s fun! Visit my instagram here: http://www.instagram.com/womenlivingwell

      I hope that helps!
      Courtney 🙂

  5. Hi Courtney! I’m also following from Croatia. I couldn’t respond on the last post because I was away ftom my computer at the time and because there were so many comments and on my phone I couldn’t find the end where the comment box was. Anyway, I’m very eager to go through the book of Samuel together. I hope you had a nice Christmas despite your family’s current personal struggle. I am praying for reconciliation. I hope you’ll let us know from time to time how God is working. Hugs from Croatia!

  6. Oh how I’ve missed coloring in my Bible with GMG’s! I’m about to make myself some coffee and dig into today’s reading…can’t wait to open the beautiful journal for this study and see what God reveals to me. I hope everyone has a great week of studying and spending quality time with our amazing Father!❤

      1. In case you have not used the short version of the journal before – This is for those who are not purchasing the Paperback Journal. This is not the same as the Paperback Journal on Amazon – this eJournal has been created for low-cost printing on a home printer and does not include the Introduction to 1 Samuel, Verses of the Day or Reflection questions. 😉

      2. Thanks!! I’ll try to plan better for the next one and save my money up so I can order enough and not pay shipping with Amazon. There really wasn’t anything else I needed this time.

  7. I’m having a hard time finding the printable e-workbook for Samuel. Can someone please help me out? I am specifically looking for the SOAK worksheets? Thanks in advance

  8. Hi Courtney. I am following from Curacao and I have been counting down too to start again. I wish you a blessed new year and may the grace of the Lord fills your cup so it will overflow . Blessings????????

    1. Hi Josefine,

I had to look at a map to see where Curacao is – and I see it’s an island in the Carribbean Sea! Wow – it must be beautiful there! We are about to get a snow storm tonight – I’m dreaming of warm weather here. Lol!

So glad you are joining us.
      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  9. I was so excited to get started today. I loved how the coloring method made me slow down and really think about what I was reading. I tend to get sidetracked very easily, but this method has changed the way I read the bible! And the SOAK method has helped me learn to dissect what I am reading and see how it applies to me! I feel like in the past few weeks of finding your site, I have learned so much more than I ever have. And I’ve gone to church my whole life and went to a Christian High School. I never really understood and comprehended like I am now!

I am so happy that I found your site! My husband is even doing this with me… following along on Good Morning Guys of course.

    1. Ashley –

I am so excited to hear this and I love that your husband is doing this with you. Wonderful!

      Thank you for sharing.
      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  10. Hi Courtney! I’m new to GMG and am excited about joining you in 1 Samuel. Thank you for all the wonderful resources to help me dig deeper into God’s Word 🙂

  11. I am so thankful for you and your ministry, Courtney! I was so excited to start up again yesterday and couldn’t put my Bible down. Since yesterday morning I have been dwelling on Hannah’s faithfulness to God and in return His faithfulness to her. I have read this story many times, but it has really touched my heart this time. Perhaps I need the reminder that I need to faithfully step out in trusting God first and He will take care of the rest like He did for me as I went through breast cancer, double mastectomy and chemo. Thanks again!

  12. I’m so glad you’re back, Courtney! You and your family are often on my mind. I’m glad you’re feeling well enough to be here leading us again. Your faith and example have been an enormous encouragement to me for several years. Love to all of you.

  13. Hi Courtney,
This is my first Bible study with all of you. I tried last year but things kept getting in the way, like I was trying to do to much. Well this year I started a read thru the Bible in a year and quickly failed, so I began 1 Samuel with you and it has been a blessing. I found the best time to do my reading of 1 Samuel and journaling is when my husband is reading the news or a book, (no he is not into the Lord, which is a bummer for me) anyway he is so busy that I don’t get interupted and give up. It is good to have you back Courtney, I was in your same shoes 8 years ago. We were divorced 4 years and after God used me to bring out of his coma, we re-married and after 1 1/2 years he quit going to church again. It makes me sad cuz I feel all alone and out of place at church and events. God is showing me my word for this year is GRACE, every where I turn and it makes me smile up at our Lord. HE is AWESOME!

  14. Hi!
I’m glad to be back at women living well, though behind schedule but will catch up eventully 😉
I have not replied earlier, but I’m joining from Argentina! This blog has helped me during last year to keep reading the Bible. Having a schedule and the weekly emails has been helpful to me. THanks! Also praying for you Courtney.
