Gospel Hoarding and Why Christians Should Do More On Social Media

We hear about the negative effects of social media, but there are some positive effects, too Here is why I think Christians should do more on social media. #Biblestudy #Romans #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

If you struggle with online addictions, neglecting your family for social media, bragging on-line or beating others down in debates – this video is not for you.  But if that does not describe you, then I want to encourage you today to think differently about social media.

In the past year, I have seen respectable Christians speak negatively of women who use social media to post verses, pictures of their Bible’s, and share the gospel boldly.  I know I’m just one voice – but my perspective is very different from theirs.   So join me as we discuss “Gospel Hoarding and Why Christians Should Do More on Social Media.”

13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Romans 10:13-15)

When I use the word “more” in my title – I mean more of sharing the gospel on social media.  Many of you are already doing this and I want to be your cheerleader!  I am so thankful for your brave witness. You inspire me daily!

Do not tire of shining your light!  I know the bumps and bruises that come from using social media to spread the gospel. It is so much easier to point and laugh than it is to be thoughtful and active and engaging in a meaningful way.

None of us will do it perfectly.  That’s what Romans 7 says. Even when we have the best of motives, we can fall into sin.  That does not mean we retreat in the battle but rather we get back up again and keep going for God’s glory.

I want to add two final notes to my video because after I uploaded it to youtube and then watched it play back – I thought that perhaps I should have been more grace filled in my approach.

1.) God is calling us each to different mission fields – so while my heart wants to see every single Christian using social media to spread the gospel and shine brightly – that may not be God’s will for you in this season of life…or ever.  So if this message is not for you – please disregard it.

2.) I realized that I did not give missionaries who DO go to foreign countries enough high praise.  Missionaries are my heroes.  I wrote about meeting my missionary hero – Elisabeth Elliot – in this post titled: The Day I Met My Hero. And I wrote about my friend, who heavily influenced me to go to Bible School, here in this post titled: Heroes Came to My House.  Also, some of the ladies on our GMG International Team are missionaries!  I love missionaries.

I don’t know who God is wanting you to share the gospel with today – but this I do know. Sharing it will not only bless others – it will bless you.  It won’t be easy though.  You have to be bold and brave but God goes with you.

Do not hoard the gospel – give it away!

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16)

  1. Thank u Courtney for ur encouraging words. I pray that God the Father of our Lord Jesus will continue to give you wisdom and strength to share Truth and that you will grow in your knowledge of God…may your heart be flooded with Love and Light … May you have His peace.

  2. What a beautiful perspective! I’m a social media retreater/withdrawer but I am challenged to pray about this and ask the Lord if/how He might want me to use my feeds for sharing His message. Thank you for the challenge to rise up to the current day in age for God’s glory!!

  3. Thank you for your encouragement! It can be very scary in this day and age to put our love for God out there! So many non believers, but also a giant sea to fish in!! God bless , Courtney:)

  4. Thank you for this post, and thank you for letting me off the hook! I truly believe my ministry priorities are my family, and then serving people through child care and meal ministry. I know folks think I am hopeless, because I have no social media accounts….but I really have never felt the need/desire/calling. I do appreciate the countless hours others spend getting the Word out, of course.????

  5. Thank you for this, Courtney! After reading today’s study (Romans 10), I have felt so convicted by the verses that say “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved… but how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?” I have had a lot of extra time in past couple of years and I have spent so much time learning more about Bible. I have found it so inspiring, and rewarding – but I feel that I have come like you said “a gospel hoarder”. I would like to share what I have learned, and be encouraging people. I am praying directions from the Lord, to show me what could I do. Would it be blogging (but how to learn that?!?) or could it be like a Bible study group on Facebook. Still waiting to know what it would be.

  6. Wouldn’t it be WONDERFUL to see affirmations and praise, and worship in your facebook feed?!! I think it would.!! I often leave my local church on Sundays, knowing that it has 3 full worships services, and wonder…..why don’t I feel like all those people that were just praising and worshiping, and hearing the word, seem to be evident in the community? Where are all those people when I’m going to the bank, coffee shop, school, or wherever? Same when you look through your social media. I see everything posted from proud parents, graduations, politics, etc…..etc, but rarely the GOOD NEWS ! I’m sad that our faith seems to be stuck in a church building or in our family, or in our heart! Let’s be bold, and talk more about are faith, and “show” the impact,…everyday…everywhere!! :))

  7. Courtney
Once again you have boldly shared what God has put on your heart and I’m grateful for that! I also have taken a social media break bc I felt like my brain was on overload at times. But I got rid of some sites that were meaningless and it’s more pleasurable now!
I thank you and will pray about this, specifically because Im a nurse and I care for an elderly Jewish woman. She’s got many friends who are Jewish and I’ve often wondered how to even get into a discussion about Jesus with them. Maybe putting something on FB can be a conversation starter. Thank you and God bless you!!

  8. Thanks for the video, this one really struck a cord with me. I see comments and memes and funny pictures from atheists on Instagram whenever I hit the search button, which shows me posts from people I don’t know or follow. It’s very upsetting and this new year I’ve resolved to NOT hit the search just to “see what’s out there.” It’s very political and negative and puts me in a bad mood. Yet watching your video made me realize I’m not doing anything positive to counteract that. I’ve never been a loud proclaimer of my faith. I don’t feel like I understand it enough to be able to defend it to non believers. Yet people who know even LESS than I do are sometimes the loudest voices on social media and are bashing God and peoples’ faith! So I’m going to start small by posting more on Instagram, my preferred form of social media…whether it be reposting your upcoming bible study plans or quotes I see on other people’s accounts. So yes, I’ll start by copying others, haha. But we will see where it goes from there. Thanks!

  9. This is my first time on Bloglovin. Your message is just what I needed today. I shared a Gospel post and didn’t feel I did it perfectly, so I deleted it. I will not get discouraged, and keep it up. Praise God for women like you who are sharing boldly. What an encouragement!

  10. Thank you so much for this and I’ve been blessed to reach SO MANY via Social Media. I know that the internet mission is an assignment and I’m glad to have your voice NOT shaming the use of SM for ministry and spreading the Gospel and hope!
It IS VERY real!! and I’m totally sending you #virtualhugs

  11. I used to feel like if I deleted my FB account no one would miss me. How wrong I was! Last year I fasted FB for the month of January. When I came back on SO many said they missed my posts, my ability to share a struggle and scripture to help point to the solution-Jesus. I do my best to share my life and how important Jesus is in my life. Not just complain but to share real life struggles and the only solution. If you look at just the amount of “likes” or comments you receive under your posts you are missing the big picture. I’ve had many face to face friends, who rarely comment under my posts, tell me how much they get out of my posts, that sometimes it’s exactly what they needed to read that day. I also get some pm’s too from some who were encouraged or have questions about a post. We need to be bold in our walk and that includes our postings on social media. I know I learn so much from the posts of others too.
Thank you for shining a light on this topic!

  12. Just a note of encouragement, I love your heart in what you wrote here. That you were willing to say I may not have shared perfectly in regards to your video. Takes a strong woman to say I’m not perfect. I also want to say I haven’t watched the video yet so this comment has nothing to do with your actual video. Just refreshing to see a humble and joyful lady. Keep it up!

  13. This really opened my eyes to the great things I can do for God through social media! I’m a stay-at-home wife and homeschooling mom, so human interactions mostly happen when I go visit my parents, take a trip to the grocery store, or go to church! I’ve always wondered how I could spread God’s Word more, and just never really saw how beneficial it is to shine God’s light on the Internet. Thank you for your video and blog post!! It was so refreshing and highly motivating!

  14. This is my main goal in blogging & when I meet someone on the street, I want them to see God & how marvelous He is! I want them to learn His strength & how He just tends to our every need even when we feel so weak & almost think He doesn’t hear us! Thanks for a wonderful post!
