10 Verses for When You Are Worried

When your mind is swirling with worried thoughts and anxiety, the best place we can turn to is God's Word. Here are 10 verses for when you are worried. #God'sWord #DoNotWorry #womenlivingwell

Worrying weighs us down.  It can cause us to lose sleep, overeat (or under eat), give us headaches, stomach aches, and make us irritable.  It can also make us feel distant from God and from others.

Worrying accomplishes nothing –

absolutely nothing and only harms you.

Often we look for God in our devotional times and worship times – but strangely enough, many times we find God’s presence most real, in the midst of a storm.

I remember a time when I would go to bed worried and wake up worried.  I printed off verses and put them beside my bed and began reading them before I went to sleep and every morning when I woke.  Slowly over time, I found my heart getting lighter and my fears subsiding.

In Matthew 14:22-33, Peter found himself in the midst of a raging storm out on a boat. Peter looked out onto the water and exclaimed “A Ghost”.  He did not expect to see Jesus standing there.

Jesus said “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid…come.”

Courageously – Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water! With his eyes on Jesus, he exchanged his fear for faith…but then…he saw the wind and waves and – BAM! He began to sink like a rock.

When we focus on our fears – we will sink – but when we focus on Christ, we find courage to have hope in the midst of our trials and tragedy.

If you are worried about something right now – take your eyes off of that thing that is stressing you out and focus on these 10 truths found in God’s Word.

10 Verses for When You Are Worried

1.) Remember to pray.  Prayer leads to peace.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
~Philippians 4:6,7
2.)  Do not let your heart be troubled. Do not be afraid.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let NOT your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
~John 14:27
3.) Throw your burdens on God.
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
~Psalm 55:22
4.) Trust that God is leading you on the path that is best for you.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
~Proverbs 3:5,6
5.)  When you feel fear welling up inside of you – stop – put your trust in God.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
~Psalm 56:3
6.)  You are not alone. God is with you.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
~Isaiah 41:10
7.)  Have faith. God will take care of you.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?  And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
~Matthew 6:25-30
8.)  Each day has enough trouble so stay focused on today and do not worry about tomorrow.
Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
~Matthew 6:34
9.)  God is with you.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
~Psalm 23:4
10.) Call on the Lord.  He is on your side!
Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me free. 6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
~Psalm 118:5,6

  1. My husband has chronic back pain and lately it’s preventing him from getting enough sleep. I’m trusting in God for this all to get worked out. Lately I’ve been focusing on Isaiah 55:9, As the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. And teying to remember God has a plan.

    1. Dear Nicole,

I love Isaiah 55:9 too! It puts things into perspective when we remember that his plans and ways are higher than we can understand. But we know that he is good so we can rest in that truth. I’m saying a prayer for your husband now – that he will find relief from his pain.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  2. Good morning Thanks for these verses. I have been copying the Good Morning Bible Study resources since the book of Judges. I read a few chapters and underlined with a pen. I never really got into the methods of your Bible studies until Romans. I am underlining the verses with colored pencils and using the soak method. I can better grasp and fully understand the verses. I think about the colors when I am reading other Bible verses. I am glad that you are taking a break before you start second Samuel and still sending other resources such as this one. I am still doing the Romans study- I am almost finished with Romans 9 and I do want to complete the study this time. The Lord is using you in a mighty way. Thanks for following Him in all that you do. I look forward to all your other blogs and studies. “May the Lord be with you and your family and Keep you in His everlasting arms. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you His favor and give you His peace.” Numbers 6 : 22 -26 Enjoy life to its fullest each day.

    1. Dear Elsie,

I’m so excited to hear that you have been with me since Judges and you are working to complete Romans! That’s awesome. Keep on going!

Thank you for your encouragement today.
      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  3. Your timing for this blog is everything. Thank you so much for this today My grandson is a 4 mo. old preemie who was taken to the ER this morning and worrying is exactly what I’ve been doing. Of all the verses you listed Prov. 3:5,6 is my go to verse. They other verses are a great source of comfort right now.

    1. OH Nan – I’m so sorry to hear about your grand baby. I am praying with you this morning. He is so blessed to have a godly grandmother in his life. May he grow to be big and strong and serve the Lord.

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  4. I fear how I am going to survive on my own someday. I just paid everything I had toward my student loans out of obedience to God and now I stand in awe of how different it feels not to have that lump sum stored up for myself and my future. However, I know can experience progress toward a greater goal of paying off a debt. I know God is in control of everything and knows best. I struggle to understand or feel at ease with it all, but I know that it will all work to good. I am so grateful for these verses tonight since tonight was the night I took action on that important decision God has stirring in me to move forward with. Matthew 6:25-30 really spoke to me, because it shows us how much more God can take care of us if He feeds the birds and clothes the grasses of the fields with flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow. God has shown me that no matter what He will take care of me. I don’t need to put my trust in what I store away when Jesus has something so much greater waiting in the future than I can possibly physically store away myself. “Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Matt.6″AMEN

    1. Thank you for sharing, Nichole. I have been struggling with fear of our dwindling savings account with the upcoming birth expenses and unpaid maternity leave of our first child arriving in March. It has been a source of great anxiety for me, and both Courtney’s blog and your response of obedience and faith has reminded me to put all my trust in God rather than relying on my own strength and the worldly safety net I’ve been relying upon.God bless you both.

    2. Nichole i can testify to God’s faithfulness. He had me use my savings to go to school rather than go into debt. He was faithful to provide ALL my needs and an amazing number of my wants. He continues to provide and care for me. He does so much better than I or any husband, if i was married, could ever do! He is always here for us regardless of the challenges we face!

  5. I went through four years of clinical depression and came out the other side by the grace of God. I was forced into a place where I had to learn to live on the Word of God and the whole experience ended up being grace to me. Thank you for these verses! They are wonderful. Another verse that I learned to love was Isaiah 50:10. Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God. The application for me was that I was experiencing deep darkness and I had to learn to trust in God in that “staying” way, as if I was fastened to Him. I learned to walk in the dark with Jesus and His Word was lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. As Betsie ten Boom told her sister Corrie, “There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.” Praying for you sisters right now.

  6. Thank you for this post. I can’t sleep tonight from worry and stress over a move my husband and I are planning so that I can stay home with our children. We have a 2 year old, and one more on the way and I just can’t see right now how it will all work out financially and logistically to move and quit my job. It seems silly to worry over something so insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it still keeps this mama up at night worrying about the list of to dos and how in the world can we get it all done. Your ministry has helped me so much since I found your site 2 years ago, I knew it would have some verses to help me focus on to calm my mind.

  7. Found this site while googling ‘worry’.
