You Can’t Hide From God {10 Ways God Intimately Knows You}

My 15 year old daughter recently got an Echo.  Most nights, I sit on her bed and we chat about life as she falls asleep.  Every now and then, while we are talking, the Echo will light up and start to talk to us.  It’s a little disturbing and it’s uncomfortable to think that it is listening to everything we say!

Have you ever been in a store and you noticed cameras watching you?  Even if you are doing nothing wrong, it just feels strange and a little uncomfortable.

Then there’s baby monitors. I used to love to listen to my babies in their cribs (via the monitor) when they would wake up from their nap and start to coo and jibber jabber and say “ma-ma”.  The baby monitor was in their rooms because I loved them and wanted to be sure I could take good care of my babies.  In the same way, God loves us and is always taking care of us.

God is always with you.

So, when we think about God’s presence always being with us – it should not be disturbing or uncomfortable but rather a comfort to us.  But sometimes we’d rather God be distant. Like the Echo or the cameras in stores, it might feel uncomfortable to think about how God is always watching us.

You can’t hide from God.

Let’s take a look at Psalm 139 together.

10 Ways God Intimately Knows You

1.) God knows your habits.

Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
(Psalm 139:1-2)

God understands your life.  He is totally familiar with your habits.  He knows when you sit down and when you stand up.

2.) God knows your thoughts.

You discern my thoughts from afar.
(Psalm 139:2)

Even if you don’t say a word, God knows what you are thinking.  He knows your good thoughts and the bad ones. He knows your personality, emotions, strengths and weaknesses.  Nothing is hidden from God.

3.) God knows your location.

You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
(Psalm 139:3)

God is like a GPS – he knows your location.  He knows when you are gone from home and driving somewhere and he knows when you are home and asleep.  He is acquainted with all of your ways.

4.) God knows your words.

Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
(Psalm 139:4)

God knows what you are going to say before you even say it.  He knows the intent of your heart.  Consider, if God walked into the room today, would you change the way you talk?  God is always in the room with you.

5.) God knows your past, present and future.

You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
(Psalm 139:5)

God goes behind you.  He knows your past. God goes before you. He knows your future. And his hand is upon you now. He is with you in the present.  God is always with us guarding us and protecting us.  We can rest easy at night knowing that our future is in God’s hands.

PAUSE and stand in AWE of your God.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
(Psalm 139:6-10)

Let’s pause midway and just ponder the awesomeness of our God that we see in Psalm 139.

Our God is omniscient.

He knows all.

Our God is omnipresent.

He is in all places at once.

But he doesn’t just know everything –

He knows you.

And he isn’t just everywhere –

He is with you.

Our God is an AWE-some God!

6.) God sees you in the darkness.

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.
(Psalm 139:11 & 12)

When we fall into the darkness of sin, it can feel like God is distant.  But there are no secrets with God.  You can’t hide from God.  The night is as day to him because he sees all.

7.) God knows your DNA.

13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
(Psalm 139:13-15)

God is self-existent and he is not just the creator of the world – he created you!  He created you in your mother’s womb and you are amazing.  Your body is unique, complex and intricate and it points to an intelligent designer who loves you.

8.) God knows the number of your days.

16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
(Psalm 139:16)

In the NIV these verses read like this: “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

God is all knowing.  He knows how and when you will die before you were even born.  100% of us will die and we will all stand face to face with the all knowing God.  We will give an account for how we lived – therefore, we should live each day for him, until we see him face to face.

9.) God is always thinking of you.

1How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.
(Psalm 139:17-18)

God’s thoughts of you are immeasurable.  They are precious.  They are vast and they are more numerous than the grains of sand.  Have you ever tried to count grains of sand?  It’s not possible.  You are valuable to God.

10.) God knows that you are a sinner.

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
(Romans 5:8)

While we were sinners – Christ died for us.

You were on God’s mind before you were born and Jesus loved you so much, he died on the cross for your sins, so that you could have a relationship with him.  If you have not accepted Jesus as your personal Savior – what are you waiting for?  You are so loved!  Just pray and confess your sins and place your faith in Jesus today.

If you are born again – take comfort in knowing that God is with you always, knows you intimately and loves you deeply.

Keep walking with the King,

  • What a beautiful article for us to not miss one marvelous morsel of this Psalm and how God love us so! Thank you for your words. It is playing in my mind like a praise and worship song. I will take this song for my meditation for today and this weekend shutting out the negative around me. Thank you and praying this comment finds you well.

I love you Lord and I will leave in you house forever and ever. Amen .

  • Thank you for bringing wonderful depth to this amazing psalm!!! Every woman needs to find her value and identity! and that it comes from God, her creator and maker!! In the years past, when I struggled to know who I was and find my value and identity as a young woman, I found this Psalm 139 and it brought so much healing to me and my broken heart and soul!! I have prayed this psalm many times for other women I have talked with that struggle to know they are loved and valued today!

    • How Great Is Our God..Oh Sing with Me How Great Is Our God. ????????????????????????
      Thank You Lord For Loving Us, Never Leaving Us..

  • Thank-you, Courtney, for revealing greater rhema depth of revelation into Psalm 139. I am preparing to give a 5-10 minute testimony to my Church family tomorrow. I’ve been praying about what to share. I sensed my focus shouldn’t be so much on the bad things of my life from which the Lord saved me, but on how awesome our God is and the new creation I am hid with Jesus in Him, as my eternal identity. This post has given me Psalm 139 upon which to build as foundation and frame of my deep expression of gratitude to our Beloved Jesus. He heals us to bestow personal and corporate freedom so that we might fulfill our destinies in Him, bringing Heaven on Earth through salvation, deliverance and healing, exactly because our Almighty Father is Who Psalm 139 reveals! Glory!

  • Courtney, this was one of the most beautiful and treasured devotions I’ve
    had the pleasure of reading. Thank you for this ode of love to and from our God

  • I am so glad that I was able to take my GMG/WLW Bible study group through this particular psalm!! I used it when I was going through breast cancer. I read it twice a day before I prayed, and dissected it verse by verse, putting each into the first person.
    For six months I did this, and the amount of joy and peace I gained from this, as well as the Holy Spirit’s presence in my life, was absolutely amazing. Praise God, He loves us so much!!

  • This is amazing. I absolutely love how you unpacked Psalm 139 (my favourite besides Psalm 23). God truly knows us. Better than we know ourselves. There is no need for us to worry because He has it all planned out. Thanks for this Courtney.

    Thank you for your wonderful studies of God’s holy word. You are an inspiration to so many of us. God bless you always.

  • Thank you Courtney for giving an even bigger picture of God’s love for us and His desire to have a relationship with us! Psalms 139 is one of the most beautiful and reassuring Scriptures I have read! It gives me confidence and let’s me know that God knew me before I was born and will be by my side until my last breathe! I praise Him for He knows and loves me for me!

  • Thank you Courtney for your insight and for your blog. There is so much God has for us in His word. It is new every morning. May God shower you with blessings!❤????????❤
