The Benefits of Homeschooling ~ Part 2 of 5

Yesterday, I shared why we homeschool. If you missed part 1, please stop and take 5 minutes to go back and watch it here. These videos taken out of context could be misunderstood so please take the time to listen to part 1 before jumping to any conclusions.

Today I want to share with you the benefits of homeschooling! Of course there are many more than I listed here…one being if you have a gifted child or a child who is struggling in a certain subject, you can choose your pace. This is not an extensive list but rather a list of the benefits to us personally!

Deuteronomy 6: 5-7 says “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Join me tomorrow for part 3. I will share what our daily routine looks like and our curriculum.

  1. Courtney,
I am so excited about your series. I wish you could post all the videos right now so I could watch them all instead of having to wait!! Your series is coming at such a perfect time for me because (insert drumroll……) after 10 years of being a working mom (as a public and private school teacher) I am FINALLY following God's persistent tug on my heart and am planning to homeschool my boys starting this fall. I couldn't be more thrilled. I am so encouraged by your series. Thank you SO much for reaching out on this topic. I truly appreciate it and can't wait to hear all your upcoming videos.

  2. Very inspirational! I so look forward to the fun of teaching/learning with our kids.

Another benefit I'd add from my own experience being homeschooled as a teen: it allowed the four of us children to participate in the family business, learn business skills and get to know our parents in the environment where they spent the majority of their day – the majority of their life, really – when they were fresh, not exhausted after a long day's work. Wow! What interesting people they turned out to be!

  3. I'm enjoying this series! One of the benefits I'm enjoying most is teaching my children they way they learn! It's really a gift to be able to school them.

I look forward to hearing about your daily schedule!

  4. Courtney, you have literally been a lifeline for me homeschooling in liberal New England. This year I have found a co-op with over 100 Christian families — An oasis in the desert! This morning I passed on your blog URL to all of them. This series is encouraging to me, a veteran homeschooler for 5 years. Hopefully through other co-op moms, it will be passed along to other women who are with their husbands considering this (best) decision for their children! Thank you for your wonderful blog! –Tiff R.

  5. Courtney,

We are a homeschool family also! I'm looking forward to the rest of your videos. Loving the first video about seasons in homeschooling, as we have experienced this through the years. I also feel as Laura does the persistent tug on my heart by God that homeschooling is the way to go. Your blog is wonderful and inspirational!

  6. Great video! I have been homeschooling my 3 kids for 5 years and I enjoy every single minute of it. I love your enthusiasm and the way you present yourself and your topics! You are a bright light and much needed. Thank you!

  7. Courtney,
We homeschooled both of our children, who are now in college. It was the best decision of our lives!
    Bless you,
    Mary

  9. Thank you for sharing your families personal benefits to homeschooling. I also like how you mentioned those with gifted children. I am currently at a stand still with our school board because my daughter is 3, they want her to start school in September because she will 4 in June. I want to homeschool, however if I do that, they cut off her speech therapy. She's level 5 highly gifted (the highest level)in everything, including speech, she speaks 10 languages and does american sign language BUT she greatly struggles with English, even though thats all my husband and I speak. Your videos are encouraging and I can't wait to see the rest of the series, my husband and I are so excited for the rest of the week to see each new video. We do have an excellent public school a whole 1 minute drive or 6 minute walk from our house, but it doesnt have a gifted program and the only school that does wont take her because shes got a speech delay in English. Your videos are very encouraging for my husband and I. We think by the end of the week, we may be able to make our final decision or at least be closer to it! God bless you and yours!! <3 from Ontario Canada!

  10. Enjoying your series. I am homeschooling my 2 school aged children and loving it. I love the freedom it brings! To be able to learn and play together. I can't wait for the rest of your series.

  11. Great video again today Courtney. Thanks for being willing to share this aspect of your life with us. My 2 children are still very young so this isn't something we've had to make a decision on just yet. We live in the UK and initially said no way can we homeschool here but it's something we are gradually opening up to. We're currently in the US until the spring and have met so many homeschooling families and have been inspired! It does seem though that there are far better resources here, both curriculums and opportunities for homeschool families to meet together and for children to socialise. My fear is that if we did homeschool without these opportunities at home we'd become very isolated. Are there any readers here from the UK or other countries where home educating is far less common and so don't have the blessing of coop's or other activities and events to be a part of for your kids to meet other kids, both Christian and not?

  12. Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh!I'm looking forward to reading your blog! I'm in Cape Town, South Africa, homeschooling my two too. I haven't watched your vids yet,but I'm sure I'll enjoy them.I'm so glad someone gave me your link!

  13. You are so inspiring! Those are reasons I want to homeschool. As I said before I was a teacher for 12 years and I see benefits to both school and homeschool, but I have the chance to speak into the lives of my children and I'm so excited! As a mom of a toddler and baby on the way, I'm already starting to think and act like we are homeschooling!

  14. Hi Courtney,

This comment is actually for Cerys (UK). I am in the UK and home schooled my daughter when my little boy was born premature. She studied through Oxford Open Learning which was excellent. She took GCSE early as she is gifted. She has returned to a small private school. She is one of the few Christians there. All her peers are respectful of the hard work ethic that home schooling gave her and she is currently Head of House. Home schooling was an important option and it helped her to see what 24 hour mothering and home making skills are really like. Courtney, I love your blog!! Katherine United Kingdom

  15. Homeschooling has been such a huge blessing in our lives. Although my hubby and I were private and public schooled ourselves, the Lord used a number of circumstances (including my teaching in the public school system) to confirm in our minds that once children came around we would be committed to training them ourselves.

It is no longer just a "good idea", but it has truly become a conviction.

7 children later, we are so thankful that the Lord brought homeschooling into our lives – we love the one-on-one time with each child, the joy of seeing them learn and the privilege of training them day in, day out.

The late Chris Klicka once said at a homeschool conf. – (I paraphrase) "You can delegate the job of teaching your kids to someone else, but you cannot delegate to someone else the responsibility for what they are learning."

  16. I cannot wait to watch the rest of this series. I hate to have to wait at all! 🙂

After watching this segment, it really makes me wish I could homeschool, when the time comes. I just can't see it being a good fit for me, but I will pray about it now that I've really heard some of the great benefits it can have.

  17. Just found your blog, watched your RR video 😀 Enjoying your series! I am mom to 6 and married to my high school sweetheart as well. We have been together since I was 15.

  18. I’m blessed to be homeschooling my son and daughter. I enjoy the benefits you’ve listed. I did not always homeschool my children so there are a few things I might consider before you would. The very first that comes to mind is: No Bullies! It was not the reason I chose to homeschool, but it is certainly a benefit. A friend of mine thinks that they won’t know how to handle a bully. I disagree. They are socialized through sports, our local Christian homeschool group, our church, our neighborhood, scouts and other ways. They face bullies now and then, but they don’t have to go to school with that aweful feeling in the pit of their tummies that comes with facing a humiliating bully on a daily basis. The bullying that goes on daily in classrooms (I’ve seen it as a substitue teacher for the last 5 years) does long term damage to sef esteem. I’m so happy to have removed them from that environment.

Thank you so much for your blog and videos. You’re an inspiration!

    God bless,
    Jennifer
