I made Janelle’s hot cocoa for my family and we drank it for days! So this recipe comes with 2 thumbs up from my family!

Janelle says “There is nothing more comforting on a cool day than to walk into a nice warm home and be welcomed with a cup of homemade hot cocoa. This is a special treat I make for my children and my neighbors. It is simple and can be kept warm in the Crockpot. This recipe combines cocoa with chocolate chips to make it extra chocolaty. I also add 1 container of cool whip to make it extra creamy.”

Homemade Hot Cocoa

(Serves 10)

3/4 cup sugar

1 cup cocoa powder

1 cup chocolate chips

1 tsp salt

1 cup hot water

1/2 gallon milk

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1 8 oz whipped cream

*extra whipped cream or marshmallows to garnish

In a med/large pot on the stovetop (med/high heat) pour in hot water, sugar, cocoa powder and salt- whisk well. Add chocolate chips, whisk well until melted. Add milk and whisk again until well combined. Add vanilla and cinnamon then stir in whipped cream. Serve and garnish!

If you are making this in advance (for example, going out to play in the snow-etc.) simply place in the Crockpot on low heat -it will be waiting for you when you come in from the cold!!!!

  2. This sounds wonderful! I'm writing it down for when it's more than just Grandpa and me around here! When we were building the house, I made Laura Bush's favorite hot cocoa recipe and the crew sure did enjoy it..I know they would have loved a crock pot full of this stuff! Thanks for sharing!

  3. I made this for my homeschool moms Christmas party and they raved. I stuck a peppermint stick in the cup too:-) Delicious!

  4. Wow! This recipe sounds amazing. I may put my coat on and hang out in the cold just so I can come in and get the full effects of this hot cocoa. Mmmmmm! Thanks.

  5. We tried this, and wasn't a fan. Sorry! The cinnamon just wasn't our thing:( So if your not a big cinnamon fan, I'd recommend leaving it out!

  10. OH, thank you so much for this recipe 🙂 🙂 I LOVE hot cocoa, I love hot cocoa mixed with coffee to make my own mochas..and I'm serious about getting out of debt and living within my means this year..so every bit helps 🙂 🙂 Oh, not to mention, that this is way better than store-bought mixes 🙂 🙂 The addition of extra chocolate chips…very necessary 🙂 🙂 🙂 Have a great weekend. Love and hugs from Oregon, Heather 🙂

    1. This seems really yummy, and I can’t wait to make it for my parents and little bros! C: I’ll have to leave out cinnamon because so many in my family are allergic. Do you think there’s anything I might be a blessed to substitute? Or would it be perfectly fine on its own?

  11. Mmm thanks for posting, love all the step by step pics too!

  12. This looks fabulous! We don't use cool whip for dietary reasons and I was wondering if you could substitute heavy whipping cream in place of it. If so, would you use it as is or whip it first? Thanks for posting this – can't wait to try it! Heather

  13. Thanks ladies! Heather, you sure can and wouldn't have to whip it.. You could also just add regular cream or milk! Stay warm everyone! love, Janelle

  14. Today, Jan. 31st, is national hot cocoa day… and the KS weather is creating the perfect weather for it! I think I'll try this recipe but add some "health" to it and see how the children enjoy it. Carob chips, raw milk, organic vanilla… ohhhhh… I'm already getting excited about it! Thanks for sharing!!!

  15. I just made this for my husband to drink after he came in snow-blowing (yay for the midwest blizzard!). He keeps saying, "OH MY GOSH! This is the BEST hot chocolate EVER! Even better than coffee shops!" Thanks for a new cold-weather treat for our home 🙂

  16. Oh yum!!! How perfect with all the cold and rainy weather sweeping through. Thanks for linking up to Tailgating Time. Hope you'll join us again tomorrow for our big Super Bowl party!

  17. You had me at crockpot (we have a very special relationship.) I'm looking around for a good homemade hot chocolate recipe. So far I haven't found one I quite like. I definitely will be trying this one!

  18. I just made this and it is delicious! Since it’s just my husband and I, I halved the recipe. I didn’t have any cool whip on hand, so I just left it out and added some extra milk. Next time I will use less cinnamon. It was a little too much for me, but I still like having a little cinnamon taste.

  19. Just made this tonight! Our church goes Christmas caroling every year and I made Spiced Apple Cider and this to enjoy after caroling. I doubled this recipe and my crock pot was FULL!! It was a HUGE hit- everyone loved it!!

    Thank you for sharing, Courtney!!

  21. can’t wait to try this!
I have nine siblings and I think they will REALLY like this! 🙂
    thanks for sharing!

  22. So I’m about to try this. I just hope my husband likes it. Newlyweds making it work. I have been looking at your blog for days now and have fallen in love with it. I think the best advice I have ever been give came from my best friend, my mother. She told me “You like to prove your right, and so does he. You keep your mouth shut. Let him think he is right, but point him in the right direction. Let him think it was his idea. And always remember, Keep God in your marriage and everyone else out.”
Lets see how my husband likes it when he comes home this afternoon.

  23. Yay! Excited to try this. I have to take drinks for my daughters basketball team’s breakfast on the 17th. This will be great!!

  24. I was wondering, if there are leftovers, can you store it in the fridge and just re-heat later? Or just keep the crockpot on until it’s all gone a couple days later? I’m also interested in finding out if you can mix together dry ingredients and just make 1 cup at a time somehow? Can’t wait to try this!

  25. Just made this for us this morning. It is pretty cold here in WV today! This is an awesome recipe and the family really enjoys it. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

  26. I made this in the crockpot for my kindergarten class after we played in the snow. They loved it! Thanks for the recipe.

  27. Just wondering – are the chocolate chips semi sweet or milk? I am looking for a recipe I can make ahead to serve at church for an Advent event. Thank you!

  28. A pizza which uses low fat cheese can save you nearly 100
calories per slice. Which is the reason it is wise to come up with a free meal
plans weight loss chart of foods and different reasons for nutrients, that you can eat over the day and list them out by meals.
If you miss your session by one hour, it really is
pretty much not carrying it out anyway. Before you
begin choosing a nutritious diet, you need to understand body
mass index (BMI). Well that’s the prevailing thought, however,
the outcomes were definately not successful,
with only minimal weight being lost.

  29. Hi,
I want to try this recipe but most of my family is lactose intolerant. Is it ok to use Lactaid instead of milk? Thank you!!

  30. hi! Two of us are Completely intolerant to dairy. Any chance this has been tried with a mill substitute? Thanks in advance! Looks delicious!

  31. I’m going to try this with homemade whipped cream rather than cool whip. Sounds really good! Can’t wait to try it.
