Escaping the Rat Race & WLWW Link-Up Party!

The term “rat race” began in the 1940′s with the invention of modern day conveniences.  More opportunities and choices were available to us than ever before and soon some felt like they were endlessly busy but often times with meaningless things.

Wikepedia defines the rat race as a term used for an endless, self-defeating or pointless pursuit. It conjures up the image of the futile efforts of a lab rat trying to escape while running around a maze or in a wheel. In an analogy to the modern city, many rats in a single maze expend a lot of effort running around, but ultimately achieve nothing meaningful either collectively or individually.

Those who first used this term would never be able to imagine the modern day conveniences we experience in 2012!  We have more time saving appliances and resources available to us than ever before and yet it seems that our stress levels only continue to rise.

Is it God’s will for God’s people to be trapped in this rat race?

Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but at succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter at all.~Francis Chan

So often we fear failure. We fear that our children won’t make the ball team or get good enough grades.  We fear wrinkles, grey hairs or missing out on the latest and greatest new gadget for our kids. But do we ever fear being successful at things that – at the end of the day when we stand before God’s throne –  don’t really matter at all?

Today I had big plans for our day – it was supposed to be a family day (daddy was off work) and my daughter got a belly ache right in the middle of the day and messed up all of our fun plans.  I was on a mission to make a great day for the kids –  but all she really needed was a mama who loved her and cared about her belly.  My plans faded into the distance – and I was the one disappointed – cause this mama gets sucked into the rat race sometimes!  What mattered to her was not the long list of plans I had but that her mommy would sit quietly on her bed rubbing her hair while she cried.  And this forced pause in our day – reminded me of what really matters in life.

The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.~Proverbs 14:1

The rat race has the potential to tear a family apart.  Many families barely have time to eat dinner together these days, much less read God’s word or pray together.  Last night I sat in bed with the kids singing our “God is an Awesome God” and a few other favorites.  It’s in these slow moments…moments of song, back rubs, and story time –  that I am most fulfilled as a mom.  As we write our to-do lists may we remember to include the simple things.  Let’s build our houses with wisdom.

Walk with the King,

Just 2… & WLWW Link-Up Party!

Me, My Fabulous Mom!, My Mom's Mom, the oldest sis, the middle sis

Sometimes I wonder, what difference can I make with only 2 children.  If I had 10, what a powerful legacy I would have…but two…I only have two.  And Sunday I teared up as I talked to my mom about those two empty chairs at our kitchen table…and that spare bedroom that would be perfect for a 3rd child, and those two sets of bunk beds in each room that would be perfect for baby #4 and #5…but all I have is 2.

As I drove away teary eyed from our discussion - with longings in my heart unfulfilled…God brought to mind the lives my mom has touched through… just 3.

3 daugthers who walk with the King.

The oldest sister has had a revolving door of children through her home for two decades.  Just this past Sunday I walked past the bus of children our church brings from the inner city – the children were waving their hands out the windows and shouting “Hiiiiiiii Courtney” and I waved back to the children AND to my sister. She has ridden this bus faithfully every Sunday for nearly a decade…so many lives have been touched by just one daughter willing to sacrifice her Sunday mornings to make these children breakfast, go to their homes, meet their parents, and give out an endless supply of hugs, gum and Jesus’ love.

Then there’s my other sister.  For years on Fridays, I faithfully see her invitation pop up on Facebook - “come to our house for fellowship tonight!”  And a dozen young married couples and a score of children arrive to read God’s word and enjoy an evening together in the hospitality of her home.

And then…there’s the little one…who’s all grown up now…with just those 2 children…who longs for more but knows she should be content.  She has an on-line ministry that touches so many – why does that not fill that void?

I reflect on my mother…just 3…

I reflect on my own home…just 2…

Just 3… her 3 have gone on to touch so many more lives simply because she was faithful to pour into us girls God’s word, God’s love, God’s grace, God’s unconditional love and God’s truth.  She clipped coupons, never ordered a drink at a restaurant, shopped the sale racks and sacrificed an immense amount of time to be with her girls at home.

And I wonder…can I do the same with just 2?  I know this chapter of my life has not closed yet and God may have #3 waiting for me as a surprise…but if he doesn’t…I must learn to be content with …just 2.

As I drove in the car with tears streaming down my face - I wrestled…I wrestled with how to deal with the emotions that helplessly wash over me from time to time about…just 2.  And then suddenly I breathed…I pondered the truth that my mom had…just 3.  God comforted me with a remembrance of how he has worked in the generation before me…I am my mom’s legacy…just a little one of 3.  I can trust that God will use my…just 2 for his glory.

Mom – you are one in a million and I’m SO thankful for you.  Thank you for our “little talk” on Sunday night.  Thank you for reminding me that God is in the details, I have…just 2… for a reason.  I must learn to trust and be glad.

I love you Mom – You are a Gift!  Happy Early Mother’s Day!!!

Our Homeschool Room, Activities & WLWW Link-Up Party!

I’ve had many emails asking me for more details about how we homeschool, how we get socialization in and more! So yesterday I shared our curriculum and Classical Conversations homeschool group pictures and today here’s a picture gallery from our year!

Our Homeschool Room – it’s a wee bit messy – but you get the idea :) !

Sometimes we work in the school room but many times we work at the kitchen table or at the kitchen desk where it’s easier for me to assist the kids while getting some of my housework done :) .

And sometimes the kids work on the couch in the living room!!!  My son does a lot of work in here because he is more of an independent worker than Alexis.

Here are some of the outside activities we participate in.  Alex has played Flag Football on the public school team for 4 years.

Alex has played basketball with public school kids for 4 years also.

Alex has taken Karate for 2 years.

Alexis has been in Gymnastics for 3 years and swim for 5 years – this was her first year to not do swim.

Alexis started piano this year and LOVES it!  We have an amazing teacher who comes to our house!

And the kids are in a Sunday evening Word of Life program at our church called Olympians.  They just received these awards this past Sunday night for saying all of their memory verses, doing their daily devotions, doing service projects and book reports.

All of this keeps us hopping!!!   So tell me – what activities are your kids in that you enjoy?

How Religious Is Your State? & WLWW Link-Up Party!

Gallup just released their newest polls and research on Religiousity in America and I thought it was interesting.

Just because someone calls himself “Religious” doesn’t mean they have a “Walk with the King” or have an intimate walk with Jesus…but I think this map shows us where more evangelism needs to be done…some states are saturated with Bible believing churches on every street corner – while others are desolate!

I love the power of the Internet that shines light into every dark nook and cranny of America!!!

For my readers in the U.S., how does your state look?  We don’t have to get on an airplane and fly across the ocean to find a lost person to share the gospel with – for most of us – we just need to walk across the street.

Keep spreading the truth till the whole world hears!!!
