Where’s The Spa Days for the Proverbs 31 Woman?

Proverbs 31:28-31 say of the Proverbs 31 woman:

28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” NIV

When we study the Proverbs 31 woman – we find that this woman worked her tail feathers off! From caring for her husband, children, servants and even the poor to rising early, staying up late, planting a vineyard, sewing her own clothes, her family’s clothing, the tapestries and the beddings – this woman never seemed to stop!

In the end, what did she get for all of her hard labor? A prize, trophy, or a plaque?

No, Proverbs 31:28-31 says she received praise.

Let’s reflect for a moment on the above list. She had to be exhausted! I mean where are the spa days? Disney Land vacations? The raise with the corner office and bonus checks? Proverbs 31:31 says – Give her the reward she has earned.” So what has she exactly “earned“?

  1. Good words from Scripture!

    Today, on a day when I’m feeling worn out and tired I’m going to seek to bless my husband and children anyway. I’m going to drink more water and go to bed earlier tonight. I’m going to smile more and try to be joyful!

  2. I love reading your pages and it makes me think a lot and reflect…. True, how did the “Perfect Wife” of the 31st Proverbs be the ‘super mom’ with absolutely no time for herself? I too live with no servant, attending to every tiny detail of a toddler and husband, with no disneyland vacation or the sort… But why is it that i’m not able to cope at many times? Even though I desire to do lot more, the lack of appreciation or the negative feedback gets me so so demotivated… What am I doing wrong from that of the wife of the 31st Proverbs?

    1. Elizabeth – I think it’s important to remember that the Proverbs 31 Woman did not work for appreciation – her motivation was a fear of God, right priorities, discipline and diligence. The praise came later in life after she had done all these things and the children were raised. Someday your little toddler will have perspective – and if you have lived a life full of loving God, your family and others well – you will hear the same praise – as well as your husbands praise. You are in the thick of it now – this is when a fear and love for God along with a passion for your family must be your driving force. Fix your eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2,3) so you do not grow weary in doing good!

      Lots of Love,
      Courtney

  3. I tried to comment at A Better Mom, but Disqus is having some trouble this morning.
    So,here is what I have to say….
    Amen, Courtney! The more I focus on my husband and children the less tired and weary I am. The more energy I have and the more I seem to be able to get done. I know it is just God honoring what I am doing for Him.
    I can not wait for the Summer Series!
    In Love,
    ~Joyce

  4. Great post Courtney. God knows the heart of women and especially when we strive to be the Proverbs 31 woman. Sometimes it feels unatainable, but with God, all things are possible. Courtney, you always write exactly what I need to read. God Bless
