The Tidbit Tray – Perfect “After-School” Snack

Janelle from Comfy in the Kitchen has the perfect “After-School” snack ideas!  Janelle writes:

There’s just “something” inviting about a tidbit tray….it helps congregate, holds ya over, and is a great way to offer hospitality. I make tidbit trays all the time- For family, guests…even for lunches! I use whatever I have on hand and it always seems to work…nothing fancy, just “comfy”.

If I know the children are really hungry around “almost” dinner time {while I am busy cooking!}, I’ll make them a tidbit tray and skip making a dinner salad. Again, I simply scour the refrigerator and cupboards for fruits, cheeses, crackers, pretzels, veggies….you name it. It’s SO worth the extra couple of mins to avoid “Maaaaaaaa……when’s dinner going to be ready!!!!!???”

Here they are… all in one place, easing those hunger pangs, talking about the cutest things. “Dinner’s almost ready kidos…don’t get too full!!!!!”

Love it Janelle! Thank you for sharing these!

  1. I love this! I do individual snacks like this for my kids sometimes, but I love the idea of them sharing a big one and serving it before dinner when they’re getting hungry (and whiny)!

  2. This has been a go to for me for a long time. My older two children were grazers when they were younger. I would set up a veggie/fruit/snack tray, early in the day and just leave it on the kitchen table. Over the years it has evolved into some healthier choices, but it has stay with us. Now I don’t set it out until about 3pm and it stays until Dinner time. Since there is four of them I prepare a little more and it still seems to be gone by 6pm Dinner, but I’m thankful that they are eating well and food that is healthy for them. Thanks for the reminder.

  3. Hi Janelle – I absolutely love your posts. I have to say, I think this idea is the smartest thing in the world!!!! How did I not ever think of that?!?!?! AWESOME, AWESOME, SMART idea! THANK YOU!!!! I am going to start following you ASAP. Thanks for Courtney from WLW who loves you too and posts your ideas. That’s how I found you.

  4. We do this for lunch every Sunday after church and it is my daughter’s favorite meal. Cheese, crackers, veggies, fruit, dip, lunchmeat, hummus. A big ole tidbit buffet.

    1. It’s so funny it seems like every Friday I say, ooooh this is dinner tonight or I’m going to make that today, and I always do. I guess I should go subscribe to your blog too : )

  5. Great idea! I have 6 kids and 3 are Type 1 diabetic so I love how the tidbit tray has healthy foods with a good balance of carbs and protein when you add cheese or dip etc! It also keeps moms from making several “dinners” for athletes arriving home from work out, while waiting for dad to get home and sit down together as a family.

  6. Wonderful, isn’t it? I do this all the time and also have little “tidbit snacks” for school. Great idea to share Janelle! Every mom should do that…
