Making Your Home a Haven: Week 1 – Gratitude

This week's spiritual focus is gratitude. Join me as I share about the importance of slowing down and practicing gratitude. Join in in our weekly challenge. #Biblestudy #MakingYourHomeaHaven #Gratitude #WomenLivingWell

{Cue the Confetti!!!} It’s time to begin the 9th Annual Making Your Home a Haven Challenge!

This week’s Spiritual Focus is Gratitude.

So, pull out a journal or your Women Living Well Habit Tracker and turn to the Gratitude page and begin!   If you don’t have a Habit Tracker – you can print these pages below.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
(Psalm 136:1)

Every day this week, pause and write down a few things you are grateful for.  It is scientifically proven that listing the things we are grateful for improves our mood, our relationships, our physical and psychological health, our sleep, our hopefulness, and our resilience.

Recognizing what we’re grateful for opens our eyes to the good gifts that God has generously given to us each day.

So many times we wonder what God’s will is for our lives and right in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – God clearly tells us that “giving thanks in all circumstances IS THE WILL OF GOD for you”!

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing,
 give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

So let’s do it!  I am 100% certain we will be blessed.

Go buy an extra large candle and light a candle everyday in your home.

I will be starting mine in the morning but you can start yours at dinner time or whenever is convenient for you.  I will be placing mine in the kitchen – the main hub of my home.

Each time the glimmer of the candle catches your eye, let it remind you to say a prayer of thanksgiving and a prayer for peace in your home.

Let’s make our homes feel like a warm hug and a sweet haven all month long!

You see when we do not take the time to tend to our own souls – we have nothing left to give to others.  So many times I have found myself busy and running on empty and then I snap – in a moment of frustration and weariness I say or do things that I would never do if I was more rested and connected with the Lord.

And so this month – let’s be intentional!  Genesis tells us, God created the heavens and the earth in six days and on the seventh day, He rested.

God stopped!

We are made in God’s image and we need to stop too.

Stop and simply light your candle and say a prayer of thanksgiving.

Life has many twists and turns each day.  It is very easy to become frazzled and frustrated.  In our own strength, we cannot be peaceful and thankful.

This is where Christ changes everything! While many things will happen in your home this week that feel out of your control, —there is one constant…

God is with you.

And the flicker of your candle on the counter morning, noon and night will remind you – there is a God who loves you, that you can turn to over and over and over with your stress, struggles, worries and fears.

So let’s begin our gratitude lists now.

Pull out a pen and paper and begin.  As you set your pen to the paper – wait on the Lord.  Seek God and ask him to show you all the ways he has shown himself to you lately.

Give thanks to God for both the big and small blessings in your life.

They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.
(Isaiah 40:31)

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
(Psalm 136:1)

Share with us in the comment section some of the things you are thankful for today.    Just look around the room where you are sitting right now.  I am positive there are more than 10 ordinary things we could easily give thanks to God for – right this minute –  but we haven’t done it.

Now’s the time!

It’s time to take our focus off of the things that are bothering us and focus on what we are thankful for – because…

What we focus on – grows.

Let’s grow in our thankfulness to the Lord this week.

It is God’s will for you!

Walk with the King,

Courtney ????

I have really been struggling with my physical limitations and feeling like I’m struggling to serve the Lord, my family and my home the way I feel that God would have me. I am thankful for the time I had this morning with my eldest daughter, though it was brief I was thankful as I looked at her and thought to myself, this time next year she will be in her own place with her new husband. It tugs at my heartstrings, I know this is what God has planned.

    Forwarded this to the young moms’ Bible study that I lead. I pray that we will all be blessed and reminded of His goodness, our depravity and our need to be in His Word and prayer every day.

  50. I am thankful for my family. I just got back from taking my Dad to the doctor, he will be 80 on December 24th, I lost my Mom in 2007 and my husband in 2016. They are a constant around my house and sometimes I want to pull my hair out but.. there in lies the hidden treasure . We have dirty dishes because we have food and I have a husband who works hard to provide for our family. My children (little tummies get hungry fast!!) are not being neglected or going without food all day and to me as their mother, that is a huge. So today, I’m thankful for yet another sink full of dishes.

Without Him, the consequences of our sin would be so immensely paralyzing that it would be too hard to focus on the things for which we should be grateful. Thank you Jesus!
